it's basically the story of a man descending into insanity after his life falls apart from his trashy life choices. The entire game is insane because it's from the perspective of an actually clinically insane dude.

I love how it's become somewhat of an "event" when things like this happen.

Find an army that appeals to you in terms of aesthetics and play style, buy a couple of kill teams and try it out. Then get 3d printer to bulk out your numbers, because you shouldn’t have to sell your kidneys to get a decent size army just because GW are greedy f*cks.

I'd say watch some videos where it explains the timelines of the whole universe so you can get a general idea of the world you're getting into. Then, you can go into deeper dive lore videos explaining each part of the history of the universe. This was my way of getting into it, and you can also buy the books as they contain more information than the videos.

Probably the cheapest way is via the videogames and lore youtube videos to learn about the factions and lore in the 40K universe ('normal' warhammer is the fantasy one, renamed with subtitle age of sigmar), and then decide what army you want to build and paint, and decide if you want to go in for the tabletop gaming aspect or just stick to painting and treat it as painting hobby. Once you've decided, there's official paints from warhammer/citadel, or Vallejo and others for third party, Painting tools can be official or third party like tamiya, who have been in the modelling scene for ages. You'd want to get tamiya extra thin cement as your plastic glue (this melts plastic together) of choice, so you don't have needle problems like Calli did haha. Consider using some putty or masking tape to temporarily stick the model's base to a tube of some kind like a wine cork so you can hold the model easier while painting it. Most warhammer shops are usually friendly with the staff giving you some tips and advice if needed.

Bricky videos for basic lore, books (Humble Bundle usually sell bundles of ebook for $20).

TH-cam videos talking about the lore and hoppy/gaming side of things. Look up 40k timeline explained and every faction in Warhammer 40k. Good place to start.

The depressing, dark and merciless universe isn't what makes me interested in WH40k, it's how the characters can overcome and survives such universe is what that got me hooked. So much we can learn from them.

There's reason why Imperial Guard is one of more popular armies in 40k Army made out of AT BEST peak human specimens with weapons that can maybe wound your average enemy of the imperium, to at worst, some random guy from penal world with explosive collar on his neck and MAYBE a lasgun, but more often just a gun, regardless of what regiment or planet they come from, what they wear and use, they're holding ground and doing 99.9% of all the war, even if shit they are fighting could give Space Marines a pause, even when shit they're fighting sometimes is older then entire human race, even when shit they're fighting sometimes is literally endless and it will keep coming after them in endless waves, even when shit they're fighting sometimes could give them better life, regardless of that, they're holding the ground, even if planet is cracking under their feet, they're holding the ground, even if their very flesh is melting off their bones, they're holding the ground TLDR.
