Welcome to Summit to Seashore Birding Adventures #S2SBirda In this series I will share birding adventures, trip reports, day twitches for rare birds and tutorials.
What started as a childhood interest in the natural world, quickly grew into a thirst for avian knowledge. Birds have taken me across the world to places such as Gambia, Russia, France, Greece, Spain, Scotland, Wales and various places in England.
Though iv'e spent most of my life in the UK, I also lived for many years in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada with North American birds becoming somewhat of an obsession. While living in Canada, I also explored parts of the USA including Texas, Washington, Oregon, California and many parts of British Columbia.

YouTube Comment
In this episode I react to a comment placed on my Rare Birds Part 1. We will look at egrets and spoonbill and why people have different reactions to seeing birds. We will take a quick look at why a ‘humble’ Chaffinch might be exciting and what my thoughts are on seeing rare birds here in the UK that I have seen elsewhere.

In this 1st of 2 videos on our 'Birding Wisdom' journey, we meet Francis Willughby and John Ray, two of the most influential naturalists from the 17th century. These much revered men jointly began a journey that changed how we record birds forever. We visit their homes, learn about their lives and pay our respects by travelling to where they have been laid to rest.

In this Summit to Seashore Birding Adventures video I recount a birding trip I took to Spain in June 2016. Over a 12 day period I traveled from The Pyrenees in the north, through central Spain and down to Tarifa in the south. This was a journey of over 2000 kms in which I connected with 146 species, 22 of which were lifers for me.

Good luck Rich, if it is as good as the first one then something to look forward too.
Hi Rich, how is the birding going. Have you had time to get out much?
@@peterlittle6651 unfortunately not this year, I have however, been working on a continuation of Birding Wisdom. I will be using a different format in producing a series of short videos, probably 15 mins or less. I have done most of the research but now need to put it together. Thanks 🙏

Excellent video Rich and a nice way to feedback to comment - I may just nick that idea for myself!! Bravo!! Incidentally, Ali and I took a holiday in Lanzarote in June and we were amazed to see the white egrets, in pairs, walking in and out of shops, bold as you like and many of them throughout the island. Is that a migratory stop over? Indigenous or ? Thanks
@@HeliShed Hi Mick! Thanks for your comments. Iv’e not been to Lanzarote but there is a big colony of Cattle Egrets there so maybe that’s what you got? I’ve seen photos of them in car parks and on cars so maybe they’re getting brave and doing some shopping. 🤣🤣🤣
@@S2SBirda lol - 'kiss me quick' hats on! Definitely White Egrets - all white, yellow beak - I thought heron at first so we researched to find out and then asked l;ocally. Yep............. bold as ya like!!
Thanks Pete for your kind words and continued support. 👍
A very good comparison of attitudes to the hobby Rich, very well explained. Regards Pete
What an excellent and well informed video Rich. Thoroughly enjoyed it - thank you. Brilliant videos and Pics!!
As a Brit, who has done Canada coast to coast, Alaska, the Eastern Seaboard and most of Europe, I wonder how you feel when you see a rare bird in Blighty, that you had seen elsewhere. I just returned from North Norfolk, where they delighted in Great White Egrets (previously seen in Hungary and Wales), Cattle Egrets and Spoonbills (both seen previously in Portugal). I also went birding in Madeira, and the local guide got immensely excited. We dashed across the island at breakneck speed, to see a first for the island. With high hopes of some rarity, all I could see was a humble Chaffinch. Exactly, he replied, the first ever Chaffinch on Madeira. I did not have the heart to tell him I have four in my back garden here in London.
@@polythenewrappedme6102 that’s a great question! I’ll give it some thought and respond with a little video on my channel as it’s not a straight forward answer and hopefully do it justice. Thanks for your comment. 👍
I am glad you.liked it. My lifer list is only 350+ in total including my travels. Just one other thought, the Great Grey Owl might have been the North American equivalent with a different Latin name.
@@polythenewrappedme6102 What’s more important than the totals is that you enjoy your birding. Numbers are fun but not everything. Yes the Great Grey Owl has two subspecies. I’ll put something together on this subject soon. 👍
Good video Rich, got you a few rarities. How is the audio recording going?
Thanks Peter. Having done so much this year as mentioned, I was busy with Birding Wisdom. Hopefully will start again next Spring.
Wow! another brilliant video Rich - well done pal!
Thanks Rich, very informative.
How are the sound recording s going?
top stuff Rich, very enjoyable
Thank you once again Rich extremely informative bro.
Fantastic video Rich - S2SBirda is all about quality over quantity when it comes to content so I shouldn;t worry about taking time out - this video and undoubtedly Part 2 is testamenet to the quality you bring. This was a really interesting video - thank you for the effort now.............................................. lets get this bloody interviews done! Your Subs want it. ;-) Brilliant info on Woolaton hell btw - I've been tens of times and didn't know half of it!!
Thanks Mick, lot's of content and thanks so much for your words of encouragement and support. Let's get this interview done!
What an excellent way of informing us of your research project and what a subject to undertake. Are you going to produce a form of book on this subject?
Writing a book isn't on my immediate agenda, mainly because of time, who know's maybe sometime in the future. Thanks so much for your continued support and feedback.
@@S2SBirda Pleasure Rich, your videos are very educating for a newbie like me.
Thank you Rich I was somewhat captivated by your most excellent delivery and obvious devotion and exacting research. I look forward to part two.
Thanks a lot John. I'm glad you enjoyed, part 2 being released tonight
Well done. Still need the buff breasted. Liked & subscribed. Please return the favour 🙌
Excellent video Rich - Interesting as ever! love the WaxWings - they look almost painted! thank you.
Thanks so much. Yes Waxwings are incredible beautiful!
Hi Rich, would you go for the Rare Bird Alert SMS messages and website or the full package. Thanks in advance.
Hi Peter, I use BirdGuides but I guess whatever system suites your budget. I know your fairly new to birding and it’s not a bad idea to have one of these alerts but there is much to explore and get to grips with for you than chasing rarity. If used wisely these are great resources for what’s about but my advice would be to go explore and discover. There are so many discoveries out there for you, spring birds and passage birds soon to arrive, heathland, farmland, sea and estuary plus the wonderful seabird colonies to visit. Seeing rare birds is wonderful and you can do both but remember to put time in and continue to familiarise yourself with what’s common and local and most of all enjoy your journey. Hope that helps.
@@S2SBirda Hi Rich, you are correct I am jumping the gun here and therefore I shall not bother with the alerts although I do follow the Rare Bird site anyway. Thank you for the thorough and explanatory answer it shows your wisdom and knowledge in these matters.
Hi Rich, hope the crap weather hasn't dampened matters for you, I have only managed to get out twice in my spare time over the last two weeks due to it pissing down. Regards Peter.
Really good review of your year Rich, hope 2024 brings you as much if not a few more. Regards Pete.
Thanks Pete. 👍
@@S2SBirda Out of interest where are you off to this year, abroad at all?
@@S2SBirda Hi Rich, on eBird I noticed you had captured 80 Northern Shovelars recently are they likely to be there in a fortnight ? Daft question I know but no one else to ask....Regards Peter
@@peterlittle6651 most ducks will probably remain until early spring. 👍
@@S2SBirda Thank you
That was a great recap of the year with some great footage and photos! Nuthatch is one of my favourite birds, But you had so many there all highly rated. Have a great 2024. Highlight of my Jan 1st morning out was a ring tail hen harrier. Also a small flock of fieldfare and c80 stock doves, here on the Essex coast.
Thanks Tony. Sounds like a great start of the year for you. Hen Harrier is a great bird any day of the year. I got a few hours in. 2 Blackcap, 6 Waxwing topped my list on the 1st. 👍
@@S2SBirda Indeed, it's one I often struggle with. Blackcap and waxwings, nice one! Nice two in fact! Here's to many more along the way during the year!
Tendaba is a very nice place
Thanks for all the help Rich and have a great festive break
Just revisited this video to get a handle on entering a new location. Very informative as usual.
Absolutely brilliant Rich, with great graphics and info. Regards Peter.
Thanks Peter, appreciate your comments and support. Glad you enjoyed it. 👍
@@S2SBirdaMy pleasure.
@@S2SBirda Had a good day at Lock Lake Eastney today various birds I could identify but I counted three birds that I looked up as Curleys at the waters edge at low tide. Are they the sort of bird you would expect at a location like that and as I have only ever seen pictures of them before I hope my I.D. skills are OK.
What a fantastic tour 🙂 Perfect timing for me too, as I'll be birding many of these spots in about 3 weeks, as I'm planning a 30 day, South Texas birding trip (April 22-May 22nd) I had to push it a little bit later, for the late arrivals in SE Arizona. As I'll be spending the last week there on the way home 🙂👍 Thank you so much for the great presentation 🙂
So this is the 3rd time I've watched your presentation 🙂 But the difference this time, is that I'm in the middle of a 2100 mile drive to get there myself 🙂👍 Spending almost 3 weeks there and in the Rio Grand valley, a couple more days in the Hill country, and then a week in SE Arizona on my way back home to Cali 🙂 Whoo Hoo 🙂 Your video is adding fuel to my fire 😀 lol Great video. Thank you 🙂
Great and very exciting presentation, so much so that I have just decided to go there! I’m with a birding pal right now who is relating his time there so I have been persuaded. Many thanks. Mike.
Hi Mike, that’s great! It’s an incredible destination with some cool birds! I hope you have a fantastic time. Thanks so much for your comment. Rich. 👍
Hi Rich, dropped into Ascension with a Galaxy full of squaddies and beer in 1998 on the way to the Falklands. Went to put in comms from the post office down there... Wish I had the time the time to wander and discover. Is the Ascension tarmac called Wideawake?
Very nice vid mate well done. Upland Sand oooofffff I also dipped the Little Crake unfortunately. Can't have em all I guess.
Thanks Shaun. I here ya mate. Hurts when we miss these birds. You did get the shrike and the Solitary Sandpiper so congrats on that mate. Let’s hope the winter turns up some good birds. See ya in the field mate. 👍
Hi Rich. It's been a pleasure bumping into you on several occasions this year. Super video's, and we'll look forward to seeing you again on the next mega.
Great stuff! Great birds.... Lousy roadworks!
Many thanks!
Excellent update Rich I meet you at Linford lakes happy birdin 👍🔭
Thanks 👍
Thank you for another excellent and informative video. What is the difference, apart from the price, between the Cley Spy and Viking mulepacks for your scopes? Regards Peter
I have had a Cley Spy mulepack for many years and no complaints. I couldn’t comment on Viking as I don’t know this product. I am sure they are both fit for purpose. 👍
@@S2SBirda Thank you Rich.
Great video, good captures, stunning scenery brilliant. Still have not worked out how you get your accomodation done, last time I travelled in a random manner we spent hours looking for a B and B. So many birds for me to learn and capture so thanks Rich for the guidance and encouragement.
Great video Rich, very informative and a good guide for future storms.
Thanks Peter, glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for your comments. 👍
Some really good captures there, well worth the effort...
Just a note too say from your My Big Year Birding 2022 / Episode 3 - Autumn video I have uploaded to ebird my list from last weekend so thanks for the hints to show how it works.
Hi S2S, what is the make of your jacket? As you are probably ex forces (a guess) you will have picked something that meets certain standards.... Regards Peter
Hi Peter, the jacket is a Paramo Halcon. It’s a really good bit of kit. Both comfortable, breathable and waterproof. I do prefer a Rab shell for hiking as much lighter and fit for purpose, but for birding the Paramo is my personal preference. They are not cheap but if your thinking about getting one its worth shopping around as I see a big difference in price depending where you look. Hope that helped mate. 🇬🇧
@@S2SBirda It does young man, I am off to Farlington tomorrow ( it is five minutes away) so hope my new hobby plus my new bins excites me
@@peterlittle6651 good luck tomorrow, hope you enjoy your day. Enjoy your new birding journey, I am sure many fun adventures lay ahead. 👍

@@S2SBirda Hi just posted up to eBird tonight my list from today, sun played havoc with some spots but still got to see some birds for the first time, my recognition skills do need to improve greatly. Thanks for the encouragement, hope you had a good day. Regards Peter
Very professional video 👍beautiful bird 🐦 😊
Thanks so much. 🙏
What a great presentation, congrats 👏! And finally a photographer who makes no secret of the spots. Although I have no idea when I'll go to Spain, I appreciate it a lot! BR from Austria
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate your kind words. TH-cam is still fairly new to me but I keep trying to make my videos better as I go along. 👍
Great video,I would like to see all the photos of the observed birds if possible, all in one photo ''as an idea ''. I enjoyed your presentation , Thank you Next time maybe Morocco ?!
What an Intro! A really professional presentation - it was interesting and kept me interested. The 'Black Vulture' my new favourite - look at that Beast! Thank you for the effort and well done for the spanish accent. ;-)
Thanks again for your feedback and continual support. Yes the Black Vulture (also known as Cinereous Vulture) has a real strong hold in Spain having both resident and wintering birds. Unlike the Eurasian Griffon Vulture that nests on cliffs, this species nests primarily in trees and I was fortunate enough to see one. It really is a formidable and moody looking creature. The birds I saw on that trip were the first I’d seen and they truly are awesome. As for my Spanish accent, it’s funny how San Miguel just rolls off the tongue. 😉….years of practice 😂🍺
Thank you - excellent answer. San Miguel indeed!@@S2SBirda
