Some scholars believe that the name Asher may be related to a deity that the tribe originally worshipped, either Asherah or Ashur, the chief Assyrian deity. Asher is also the name of Jacob's eighth son in the Bible, whose mother was Zilpah, Leah's servant. In the Bible, Asher and his family settled in Canaan, and Jacob blessed him on his deathbed, saying "his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties" (Gen. 49:20). Moses also blessed Asher, saying "May Asher be blessed above other sons; may he be esteemed by his brothers; may he bathe his feet in olive oil" (Deuteronomy 33:24).
