Interview with Wesley Eure: "Land of the Lost's" Will Marshall
In 1974, Sid and Marty Krofft launched a Saturday morning sci-fi/adventure program that became an instant hit and is now remembered as one of the most iconic television shows of the 1970s: "Land of the Lost." Just in time for the 50th anniversary of "Land of the Lost," I was fortunate to sit down with "Land of the Lost" star Wesley Eure, who played Will Marshall on the show. Wesley shares his memories of how the show got started, what it was like making "Land of the Lost," what the chemistry was like between the actors, and how the characters and situations in "Land of the Lost" established a legacy that has touched generations.

The Atlantean Archive focuses on books, short stories, movies, and television shows of the past, up through the 1980s, although we may cover more current things from time to time as well. I also hope to bring you interviews with some of the stars and creators who helped shape the culture that influenced my generation. My emphasis is on horror, science fiction, adventure, fantasy, movies, and TV shows that time forgot, general 70s and 80s nostalgia, and (occasionally) more serious historical content. One last video for Garbaugust 2024: "The Vampire Memoirs," by Traci Briery, a first-person account of the life of Mara, a 1,600 year-old vampire living in modern-day California (where else?). My early history as a pre-teen with both movies was frustration. You got the killer down once and it got back up? And the next time you get it down you run away again, leaving their weapon right there with them again? At least take it with you. Better yet, use it, help yourself to a hand, or foot, or head. Put those in a sack and take them too. Stumpy McHeadless will be less of an ongoing threat if they can't regenerate. Of course, most horror fiction, and movies in particular, rely on the conceit that horror stories and movies don't exist in that world. The second or third blood-drained corpse in a world like ours that pops up and sure, the Chief will "pooh-pooh" talk of vampires, but they'll be issuing stakes, garlic, and holy water on the side, and calling the Vatican. Because why not?

    • @TheAtlanteanArchive
      @TheAtlanteanArchive 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @carebear8762 Amen to all of that! Dr. Loomis had the right idea in Halloween II ("I'm gonna blow him up"), but screenwriters can resurrect anything when the money is right. Yes, if I ever thought I was up against a Jason or a Michael, that head is definitely coming off if I get him down! And I would not ever throw a weapon away. The original Night Stalker film is, oddly enough, a good case in point. The city officials let Kolchak kill the vampire, and then they make up a cover story and use the threat of a murderer arrest warrant to make him leave town. Well, if I'm ever transported to a parallel reality where this stuff is real, I'll be well-armed!

      One part that I did think was creepy was when Judith answers the door, thinking it's her boyfriend, only to find a group of trick-or-treaters, including Michael in his clown costume. She decides to play with them and asks, "What are you doing to do if I don't give you anything?", and Michael says "We're gonna kill you." That was pretty good.

    These days, unless I find an adaptation particularly offensive, I don’t go. The book is better than the movie. I can appreciate the merits of each medium on their own once in a while. I think the movie is better than the book and vice versa comes to jaws. I think the movie in the book are good for two different reasons and the reason people like the movie rather than the book am my opinion. It’s because Jaws is rather optimistic movie that shows people as the aspire to be that’s why it ends on I’m more hopeful note. but it would be an interesting experiment to do a more straight adaptation of the novel. It wouldn’t be as crowd pleasing. I read the book along time back in high school. I didn’t care for the liberally use of the N-word being half African-American. I rediscovered it recently and I’ve grown to appreciate it. I think the biggest sin of the book is the fact that it’s very dry and feels like a poor man, Stephen King, but what I do appreciate it is it shows human beings as they are petty lying selfish but still finds the humanity and them. The way I see the shark in the book. It’s in a shark but karma with teeth a message from God or some higher power to punish a town of Amity for their wickedness before the shark we learn of how chief Brody. Is covering up crimes and there was a team of Con artist. Who were doing bad contractor jobs at the town turned on them is understandable. but seeing how the town declared war on them is chilling when you think about it. I fell. Ellen Brody‘s affair was salacious material, but I had a depth of character to it sympathy with Ellen going through a midlife crisis and appreciating the life she has now that to me an honest opinion of a relationship, not that fairytale bullshit, but being flawed same way, you are in life, and you’re either fine with it or you run away. I wouldn’t call Peter Benchley, a great rider, but a good storyteller. I think the fact that Steven Spielberg mom cheated on his dad influenced him to make changes to the story.

    I read Jaws a long time ago (and I think I read the novel before I saw the movie). I've got a copy ready to go as soon as I finish the novel I'm currently reading. I remembered that the novel and movie are quite different, and I'll approach it again as two different entities.

      @susanmacdonald4288 Yes, the novel is more of a drama, whereas the film is horror/action/adventure. Let me know what you think when you finish it. Thanks for commenting!

      @@TheAtlanteanArchive I finished the novel, and still prefer the movie. The novel, though, did a better job of portraying the shark as just a fish going about its normal life, and not a monster deliberately terrorizing a community. And there was content and subtleties that they just didn't have time for in the movie. But Peter Benchley didn't do his characters any favours, because didn't much like most of them. I was even iffy on Brody. The one thing that I loved was when Harry Meadows dropped off the next day's proofs, with Hooper's memorial, and the piece praising Brody...I really appreciated that. All in all, if they'd stuck more closely to the book, the movie would not have been the blockbuster that it was, and still incredibly popular today.

      @susanmacdonald4288 Thanks for getting back to me on this. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on it. The newspaper editor was the one character that I missed in the movie after having read the book. Otherwise, I agree with you that the characters were mostly unlikable, including Brody. This is great news. My favorite book. When I was a kid I would go to the library with my dad and as we checked out books that demon face on the spine stared at me. One day I said, "I'm gonna read this one. It's always staring at me." It became my favorite book. I often daydreamed about who I would cast. Michael Clark Duncan as Josh, Dakota Fanning as Swan, Dennis Hopper as Macklin... But time rolls on. Hopefully they find the perfect people for the roles. Keep a look out for Mr. Welcome.

    Oh wow man, you really did copy all that by hand? That's a really cool story! Unfortunately I don't have such a one to tell you.. maybe it's how I got into reading. I always had a rough time concentrating and I thought reading was boring. We were forced to read in school and I saw in my grandfathers book shelf a nice copy of Dracula so I chose that one. I mean, if school was gonna force me to read I was gonna read something cool! And allthough I don't remember much, I do remember how I reacted to some chapters and that was a fantastic feeling within me. I also read The Lost World (Crichton) but I found it boring as shit.. :P You have to remember I was in elementary school at this point. Then when I was 7 years old I watched Starship Troopers with my father and brothers and it both fascinated me and scared the shit out of me. But ever since then I decided I wanted to read the book and I tried and tried but I just couldn't do it. Fast forward about 12 years or so and I bought the book, decided now was the time and I forced myself to it. And that was how I got my passion for reading. Heinleins way of writing was just so good and thought provoking, and I wanted to compare it to the movie. It was of course extremely different and I knew that, but it didn't ruin it for me. When I was finished I picked up his other book Double Star and actually enjoyd that even more. That was a rough summer for me because I got my skin disease which meant I had to wear gloves if I was ever going to read anything. But it was worth it :)

      Thanks for the comment and telling me how you got into reading! Dracula was the first adult-level novel that I read, and I was struck by how different it was from the adaptations I saw on TV from studios like Hammer. I think my favorite part of the novel is where Dracula's wives are about to prey on Jonathan Harker. The description is absolutely perfect. I've been meaning to read Starship Troopers for some time now but have not gotten around to it yet. So far, the only Heinline books I've read are, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, The Door into Summer, and Tunnel in the Sky, all of which were very good. Thanks again for commenting. I hope you were eventually cured of that skin condition, but either way, I'm glad that you found a way to enjoy reading!

    • @Wabin22
      @Wabin22 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheAtlanteanArchive Funny you should say that, because I still remember when I was a kid reading exactly that part with Draculas wives trying to prey on Harker, and remember how amazing it was and that description was probably my first "wow" moment ever reading a book. Then I'd recommend you get into Starship Troopers soon :) Hmm interesting, I read a couple of chapters of The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress but I had a hard time getting into it. The Door Into Summer I have but haven't read it yet, Tunnel In the Sky I have not read either. I did read halfway through Citizen of the Galaxy and even though it's more of his young adult novels I found it very good. Also, For Us The Living had an interesting start but unfortunately I put down these books and haven't been able to get back to them yet. Thanks for sharing your story as well! And thanks for the well wishes, I've recently started on new medication that isn't making me feel sick, and as of now it's working out :)

    Great review! I decided to read the Barsoom series after seeing Cosmos in which Carl Sagan spoke so passionately about these stories that he loved as a child. So I started to read A Princess and soon I too was in love with the world of Barsoom. I have read the whole series by now. I hope you won't stop at the first three books: most of the ones that come after that are awesome too. My favourites of the series are in fact the fifth book The Chessmen of Mars, and the sixth The Mastermind of Mars.

      @TheAtlanteanArchive 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, these books are amazing, especially when you consider that Burroughs is almost single-handedly responsible for creating modern science-fiction and space opera. I should be posting a review of "The Warlord of Mars" soon. I'm in the middle of some other projects at the moment, but I do plan on returning to the Mars series soon. I've heard good stuff about "Chessmen" as well, so it'll be interesting to see where that goes. I wish I had encountered Burroughs when I was younger. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I been slowly reading Swan Song for over a year and am about 61% through and it is really good. It is bleak so now than I have to put it down but it does grab you from page one. That openoing scene with the president lighting looking into the flame on the match is so powerful in a way that I can't put my finger on. It is already one the vary few fantasy books I have liked. The list also includes The Stand.

    • @TheAtlanteanArchive
      @TheAtlanteanArchive 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed. The opening is powerful, probably because of the bleak, imminent doom feeling that it conveys. McCammon does an excellent job of conveying the imagery of total destruction and societal collapse in this book. I can understand why you would take it in sections.

    I am very interested by this. Having recently started reading Stephen King's books and have read The Stand and am nearly finished with 11//22/63, then people started recommending Swan Song, which I've downloaded onto my Kindle and is next up! So, I will have read it by the time this series comes out. I would echo thoughts about T.V. companies doing these things justice. I'm a massive fan of The Mists of Avalon and would _love_ to see a decent version of it on the screen, having read it no end of times, but I would be very wary that they'd cut corners and make a total mess of it!

    • @TheAtlanteanArchive
      @TheAtlanteanArchive 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comments! I'm hoping that with McCammon himself involved in the project, they'll turn out something faithful to the novel. Of course, it also needs the right cast to carry the story. I hope you enjoy reading "Swan Song"! Like "The Stand," it's a hefty read, but the story and characters really draw you in and, unlike "The Stand" (in the opinion of many, anyway), it has a strong, satisfying conclusion. Happy reading!
