As a pageant newbie, Ashley didn't know anyone in the competition. She reached out to Ashley Williams simply because they shared the same first name. Interestingly, both Ashleys ended up winning titles that night. The reason she asked if she could leave after announcing the finalists was she thought she might have a chance to make her dance studio practice that night after that afternoon's preliminary. She didn't tell anybody that she was going to compete for Miss Virginia Teen USA, and she didn't ask for an excused absence. Her dance teacher asked her late night why she missed practice; that is when she shared the news that she had just won the title of Miss Virginia Teen USA.
