First Solo in IMC: LOC 15 KMTN Approach
My first time alone in an aircraft during IMC, I was vectored for the Localizer 15 at Martin State Airport. Ceilings were around 1700 feet but the broken clouds nevertheless made for a spectacular approach.

Martin State to Hanover County, VA - first IMC flight post-checkride!

My friend needed a ride to an ultimate frisbee tournament outside Richmond, and I'd been chomping at the bit to get some more instrument time, so this was the perfect excuse to go fly. Hanover County airport had a respectable 500 foot ceiling during our approach. This was my first time in IMC (instrument meteorological conditions) without an instructor.

Bad crosswind landing and go around

Being a fairly novice pilot, I totally botched this landing while doing some crosswind practice. Watch as the breeze almost pushes me off the runway! My second attempt was much better and someone even said "nice landing" over the radio. I've since gotten a lot better at these.

Short approaches are fun! Tried a slip on base to get down as fast as I could.

Doing pattern work at KMTN with a slight quartering tailwind. The wind and some excess speed on my part resulted in a pretty long landing roll.
Short Approach at MTN

Busy morning in the pattern, so tower put me on short approach. I'd only ever done one short approach before, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. It turned out to be my best landing that whole flight!
I still remember my first IFR solo in 1980 with steam gauges in 738CV (172). A little ice, a bit nervous, a lot satisfied.

What the heck is kicking the rudder ? Would have been nice to have explained what that actually is.

There must be few life experiences as poignant as a first flight solo. This is so cool! That big 360 CID 4 banger really gets you up to altitude fast. The sun in the morning is bright enough. Wear the best sun glasses you can obtain. Great flying, John! Congratulations! Kudos to your fine instructor too!
