I feel the need to respond the comment of SunsetSix, even though the post was from two years ago. Contrary to the notion they didn't come across well singing live, they were all experienced singers. Cass and Denny, in particular, were standout singers. And John and Michelle held their own just fine. A rare and raw live example of their chemistry is the acoustic performance of "I Call Your Name." The sound of their vocal harmonies are remarkably similar to their studio recordings, even as this was an early arrangement of the song. It's rather unfortunate we have only scant information about the live shows they performed. No live recordings have ever surfaced. The very least we have is the Monterey Pop performance. But the circumstances surrounding the festival performance were not indicative of their typical road concerts. The group was unrehearsed, there were technical issues that rendered Michelle's mike inoperable, and the bubble was about to burst, as they were all ready to part ways. Their TV performances were always lip-synced, although they often sung live to the recorded track. As Michelle stated "just another overdub!" At that time it was standard procedure for many of the musical acts who appeared on TV. Sometime The Mamas & Papas would hilariously and defiantly break the illusion;. Michelle eating a banana, or singing into it like it was a mike, or the instance where Cass briefly broke away from her vocal line to say something to Michelle. Primarily, as studio vocal group with John being the only musician, the only time they assembled a full band is when they were on the road...perhaps no more than 35 shows between 1966-1967. This facet of their existence has simply vanished. There is so little documentation, and not even one recording/bootleg has emerged.

Lip-synced! That's why Michelle is eating the banana. There's another TH-cam video where she eats a banana while they're lip-syncing. On Network TV shows there was too much at stake just to let them sing. Then too M&P were a studio group--they didn't come across as well on tour.
