    Everyone forgets about the fact that we (Cabs) broke their winning streak the week before due to our tireless work in Chicago. Lots of changes to our show. They were great that night, but we were just a little bit better.

    I saw The Casper Troopers again, live, in the summer of 1976, at Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colorado. Great show, but, OMG, Battle Hymn of the Republic, brilliant, I choked up, and my date was concerned. She knew I had been in the armed forces, but had no idea what the song means to us veterans. Thank you Troopers, love the old school performances.

    Blue Rock, was one great Real Drum and bugle Corps. They had millions of fans throughout the United States Today is February 11th 2023. I miss seeing Real Drum and bugle Corps. May they all rest in peace.

    This was back, when we still had Real Drum and bugle Corps. There was no need for hundreds of props, we did not use electric guitars, slide trombones, electric organs, PA system used to explain what was going on. When grandma's played real rudiments, today they juggle more than play, in my opinion, DCI is responsible for the demise of what was one of the greatest activities. They turned it into a marching band competition, superimposed on a three ring circus. DCI and DCA need to change their names to marching band International. Call it what it really is today. We no longer have real drum and bugle Corps, may they all rest in peace. Former member of the Long Island Sunrisers 1964 through 1968.

    Saw them at Marion Ohio US Open a few times. One year they went on and got hammered by a thunderstorm. If I remember right, the judges were called off the field but the Rocky Knockers finished their show. Finals was Sunday and they had their pants and T-shirts fr uniforms. Great drumline. Won 30 of 32 drum shows. Set the bar for what was to come.

    A total of 64 steps for the major brass section to get to the 50 yard line. That is a stride of about 28", compared to the "8 to 5" steps of today's corps (about 22"). It seems so much more "natural" and is performed very well, especially without yard lines!

      In my opinion old school drum and bugle Corps has like far more entertaining and exciting than what dcin dcar doing today and the crowds speak for themselves years ago we had 20000 to 50 + thousand people in the stadiums

    I was there, march'g w/Audubon when we did the Grand Tour that yr. Hit all the nat'l shows & this was our 1st stop. We won the all-girlntitles titles wherever we went but were jobbed out of the finals by the judging assoc. When they finished prelims that afternoon & we weren't included, the crowd got angry. That PM, before the show started & they started chant'g "Where's Audubon?" & finally the contest people came to our director & asked if we would put on a pre-contest exhibition. Just like that. So we got back on the buses & scrambled into our uniforms & went on before the Boston Crusaders. It was the start of the best yr in our history. The Troopers were great, favorites of ours for yrs. The yr before, we had shared practice facilities w/them in Fla. That was where our reputation for m&m was born. What. A. Season!

    What happened to Blue Rock after 71? They never made it to DCI finals.

  • @petesmith663
    @petesmith663 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My first big time show. Was blown away by all of the finalists. Drum Corps had come a long way since 67. Shows really starting to get creative. Can see why they wanted to break away to DCI, to do their own rules and not be held back by legion and VFW.

    • @americanspirit8932
      @americanspirit8932 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, in my opinion, DCI, is the reason for the demise and failure of the activity. They have turned it into a marching band competition, superimposed on a three ring circus. You no longer have real drum and bugle Corps, may they all rest in peace. Drum Corps International, now should be cooled marching band International. They are identical to bands of America. And I have nothing against marching bands the Great. But today these are not drum and bugle Corps. They can't even do a parade. Local communities don't support them because who the heck are they they have no idea, plus the members come from various states and countries. Most prominent people course close their doors due to the ridiculous cost to go on tour and travel housing food for weeks at a time. In North America that one time we has approximately 7,000, drum and bugle Corps. They were not all Marching In maneuvering quick percentage were many would just for parades and Stancil competition all those were strictly for parades representing their community. Old school Drum Corps used for very long $10 sometimes or $20 or $50 for the year, today it's around $6,000 per person. What's the using electric guitars slide trombones, PA systems for the electric guitarist and electric organs Kama also to explain what they're doing on the field, with thousands and thousands of dollars in props, and who knows how much in the pits section. Then transport always both conditional 18-wheelers, I can go on and on the expense goes through the roof. I wish they would just call it what it is today. It is a marching band. Former member of a Floyd Bennett golden eagles, from Brooklyn New York, 1960 and 1961, former member of the Long Island Sunrisers 1964 through 1968. Co-founded along with John Dowling, may he rest in peace, the American Spirit senior alumni drum and bugle Corps from the Tampa Bay Florida area.

    Hawthore was more than Good they were GREAT FABULOUS and when they took the field it reminded me of B52 Bombers carpeting the Ho Chi Minh trail. Hawthorne comes down from the start and man clear the stands look out the BOSS DRUM CORPS has entered the field of competition.

    Several folks asked about the booing. I marched in this contest as a member of the Hamburg Kingsmen. The crowd in Jersey City was around half for Cabs, half for Skyliners and offered just about no reaction to most of the other corps. It was an interesting night to say the least, especially when Sky lost to Cabs on a penalty. The controversy on that one rages to this day......

    R.I.P. Gail Royer - a high school music teacher turned drum corps musical genius almost overnight. I remember when they first came east, and when announced in 1st place, everyone marveled the "Santa Clara..... WHO??" That was the beginning of a 45 year run that's still running.

    01danbritt - that was PeeWee Todaro playing BumbleBee, Not Pepe Notaro. That was a 14-man snare line, 7 of which played tenor for some numbers, other numbers it was actually two 7-man snare lines playing different parts that complemented each other. Wes Myers wrote some great charts for the corps. Traffic Jam may be making a guest appearance with the Alumni Corps in 2015 - along with the perennial "ELKS PARADE!"

    I used to watch the Skyliners rehearse all the time at Randall's island in New York. Just the sheer power of the horn line used to blow me away....they could heard for miles, even in a loud ass city like NY. Sky was a direct inspiration for the New York Lancers and CMCC Warriors drum and bugle corps (Both NYC Corps from the Bronx, NY) we all rehearsed next to each other in the huge parking lot on Randall's island....once our practice was over we would just hang out and watch SKY for hours. We even had some Skyliner personnel as Instructors ( Hy Drietzer, and others). Glad they're still competing in DCA today.
