South African Hero: Rene Sethren
In the 3rd episode of this series I examine the naval history of South Africa and highlight the difficult attempts to build up a navy in a country more focused on land. Ultimately the flotillas of small ships that not only protected South African Waters in WWII but did heroic service in the Mediterranean Theatre, culminated in the extraordinary feats of Rene Sethren in 1941.

On the 17th August 1987 the largest ever offensive was launched by the Armed Forces of Angola and their Communist allies. Join me on the 17th August 2020 as I release my Debut Film, the 9 part Documentary series, Born To War. #Bushwar #SADF
Dominate the skies control the battlefield. Did the sa air force have a refueling Boeing that would make long range attacks possible.
They did have a Boeing 707 for air refuelling which they used for a couple of missions, but with the limited time and space for refuelling it did not drastically change their range.
Back in the 80's here🇵🇭we never heard of this Angola bush war not until I got my copies of Soldier of Fortune magazines w/c covered the conflict
Narrator, it is not "sixty-one" mech...it is "six - one" mech
Why do you credit every thing to the Reconnaissance units
Don't show much of our 7lla regement
Very good was there 83 to87
Good job. Why no mention of Russians or Americans? I myself was in Angola in 1983 when an American Captain was present advising SADF... Anyway, the commies won the political battle and now rule supreme over Southern Africa, destroying any semblance of civilisation.
The SAN renamed the Minister Class Strike Craft, SAS OSWALD PIROW to SAS RENÉ SETHREN at the advent of our democracy. I had the pleasure and honour of commanding her. I also had the privilege of meeting Renè Sethren' family. Such a humble and wonderful family who are very proud of their father's service and bravery.
F.W. de Klerk … one of the biggest traitors of this beautiful country …
An absorbing series! You have done an amazing job. I was also involved in Operation Savannah. Your work is crucial to the account of what went down during the Border War.Thank you so much. Your Dad would be very proud of what you have achieved!!!

I knew a Duncan (not well) from Subway nite club, I saw him when I was stationed at 2SAI Rooikop in 1989. He was with 61 Mech when they returned there, he looked a state. I wonder if this is same the Duncan that was part of that bombing of the ratels?
wow, this was an incredibly insightful docuseries! Thank you. I was doing bush-phase of basics training on 01st April 1989 when SWAPO attacked Northern SWA. Pik Botha saying it's a win-win for both sides. Yes and no. South Africa "paid" Cuba to leave Angola by handing over SWA. The only way it was a win for South Africa, was because we no longer had the stomach for a war that was ever increasingly moving further South. To save more young men's lives from being lost was a win. But we gave up SWA. The only reason Cuba was in Angola in the first place was to ensure Communist rule in Angola and to get South Africa out of SWA. Armscor pullng the G6 out of the war and diverting availability of fresh weapons for the sake of $, plus the lack of parts readiness by the SADF top brass, literally put the whole Bush War at risk, costing you men's lives. This was disappointing to hear. Anyway, I was never operational due to timing of resolution 435. I am proud to have served and grateful to the men who were in combat and for those who died.
In Zastron, at free state we honor Lucas majozi. It will mark 5th annual Celebration
Yup, called up on the 6th Jan 1975 klaared out on the 6th March 1976. It should have been the 6th Jan 1976.
Fantastic series, based in Katima Mulilo '87 well away from any action..
My brother was there and he told me the exact same Mig bombing run.
The ratel back bone of the sadf
And now both Cuba and South Africa are sh*t holes. What an incredible waste of human lives.
Excellent. I was part of ops. Hooper.
I believe 61 Mech was a brigade group, not a battalion?
As far as I can remember it was Battalion size with additional artillery and Tank squadrons. The whole force of the SADF was called 20 SA Brigade so I dont think 61 was Brigade size. SADF would often adopt ad hoc terms like Combat Group/Taskforce Foxtrot etc which might include members from various units. Most SA units were battalions with some of the older forces remaing as Regiments, brigade was not a common term unless more than one battalion was present such as at the fighting on the Lomba
Our guys were awesome🎉 what would the wonderful men who lost there lifes say about what is going on now? 😢 We must remember where we came from and who we are
We were part of the Cuito conflict, 4 SAI Charlie company and in approaching the conflict zone, my Rarel 20's right tyre was blown out where an artillery round landed just meters from us. Myself and a friend in the ratel section were brave enough to climb out under heavy artillery fire and replaced it, even placing the blown out Tire back on top the vehicle. This was harrowing enough but continued. Sad though one our ratel sections went out in front who had lost radio comms and was blown out by own forces, the driver, gunner and section leader survived, the vehicle was buried in honour of the lives lost that day.
👏🏻🍻🇿🇦👍🏻
Whoever made this video completely exised Unita from this video. They died in their thousands for the protection of the south Africans and the war
Yes they did die but it was South Africa that fought their war for them it should have been the Americans seing they got us into this war but they were too scared that time to face the Rusians openly .
Unita was not of much use, poorly trained and weak disciplined
We always lost the propaganda war and won the wars. Capturing 3 tanks and claiming victory is like claiming your mother or sister is your girlfriend 😂 and for the west to believe it was to show their gullibility and or stupidity.
Hi, I were involved in ops packer, sadly to see, it was from the start the same picture.... Politician's and commanders playing their risky cards (on a 0:32 time limited table).... 99% of them sitting at home with their families.... The result was... Lost of young life's... (very, very.... Sad)... In ops Packer case : The recce in command (in observation of Tumpu area.), told us about 04H00 on the day of ops ... His report to the general in command in Bloemfontein was, 'you cannot take Tumpu with 300 tanks' they are digged in and have strengthen, their weapons, and waiting on you, it would be suicidal to go in with 23 tanks.... Needles to say, we went in (on same ruite as 2 previous attempts).... We lost the 3 tanks, recover our friends inside, then was task to tow 1 tank that lost its tracks....(2 tanks towing 1) at maybe 5 km/h.... Leaving us behind... And Fapla gunning/following us on right hand side... From early morning to dark I have prayed (like never before).... Only God saved us! From morters in dark morning, to endless bombarding, losing Unitas , recovering our friends in direct fire to( migs Victor, Victor's)..
Sorry mnr politicians, you have got blood on your hands.... Alot of families have lost their loved ones... What about saying sorry to your own people....????
Hi

I was there still do not understand why but I have no guilt o any other emotion attached to it. It was the job of the day and being in charge of a 61mech infantry platoon was a honor. Salute
My brother was in 61 mech during that time
I asked because I was there and still live in RSA
Ja that is all that I can comment was it really necessary
How Pik Botha sold us out over drinks in a bar!
No, he skillfully got us out of perpetuating WAR with reasonably minimal loss of lives. What alternative would you have suggested ?
I'm a descendant of Sailor. This is amazing, thanks so much - what a HERO! :)
My mother was a cousin to Sailor
Drones being used in South African army years before other countries. Says alot about the countries ingenuity
South Africa provided so many great warriors. We can be proud. I recently came across a town in Italy where a South African earned a VC in the Hampshire Regiment. Lt. Norton. Lest we forget - we now must continue to defend freedom, democracy, truth and human decency/rights to honour their sacrifice.
Cuba took over on behalf of the Soviets
They forgot the logistical issues

Yes I was in Angola around 1983. I seen a lot a heard a lot but never understood the big picture. Thank you for taking the time to make this excellent historical account, finally I can appreciate my brothers in arms, in a way that makes sense. Good job
