What about travel apps that tell you where you are on the route with GPS? As long as the passenger knows how to use it, and can even use a Bluetooth earphone if he doesn't want it talking aloud to disturb other passengers, and not needing a wire that can get in the way. It could be a combination of features, to ensure that even old buses can be more easily used. It wouldn't hurt to have a feature where a driver can programme a requested stop to remind him to stop the bus and wait for a disabled passenger, to ensure that he can disembark at the correct stop. There are lots of possibilities, including the voice prompts and screen prompts (which are helpful for any passenger who may not know the particular route). Also things like maybe having QR codes (or something similar?) on the sides/front/rear of the bus, or something, that can easily be scanned, so a passenger knows it is definitely the correct bus, without having to rely on asking someone else, or stopping each bus to ask if it is Number X + Route Y (for buses that might have variable routes). If all bus operators shared decent real-time data on every bus, it would help for apps, so you could definitely know exactly where your bus is and exactly when it arrives, etc.
Your segment of the documentary was incredibly powerful. It showed, with blinding clarity, the perspectives of the people who found/find themselves on both sides of that 'railing on the bridge', so to speak. Well done for taking part. I'm sure it will help more people than we can ever know.
