Gibson Les Paul 50's Studio Tribute P90's 2011
NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH the Gibson Les Paul 50's Tribute 2013 - 2015. Even Gibson could've made this vaguely different nomenclature a little easier. Anyway, here's the slightly more upmarket version of a 50's Tribute.

Although these came in as a budget model they have the same construction as a Studio with the addition of a pair of '57 Classic humbuckers - pure quality.

Another pointy guitar. This one has a set neck, EMG 61/80 active pickups and all sorts of other goodies. Proper quality instrument from Korea - lovely thing to play.

This one's a bit of a porker at a shade over 9 lbs and clearly made before they thought of 9 hole weight relief. Quality guitar made toward the end of Gibson's 'good wood' era.

We know it's a 2002 guitar because that was the only year they were made. Awesome quality for a budget range guitar with a bolt-on neck. Affordable and really nice quality.

They went Va banque when they made this thing. Les Paul was a really clever innovator and an astounding guitarist. He invented loads of the tech we take for granted these days. You've got to hand it to Gibson for trying out weird things. I bet they lost a bundle on these.

Year unknown but the wood species is certainly "ply" - in the body anyway. Despite its foibles it sounds and plays tip-top and the knock-off EMG pickups are producing 15 ohms. Knockout!

The quintessential Glam Rock guitar was also sported by lesser Spandexed artistes like Justin Hawkins and that bloke from the Manics. I think Peter Frampton had one, too. Thinking about it, they might've been Custom Shop jobs but it's the same image. Let's Rock!

love a p90 in a lp this one is a gem A1 playing bang on
10:50 - Check that it doesn't say "Gobson"😄. 🤘
I've got the goldtop version. These are unreal! One of the best guitars I've ever played.
I have the same model, same year and I love it.
Got one 2nd hand from Crack Converters. Replaced the tuners with some Kluson vintage tuners, replaced the bridge with a better one, and dropped in a Gibson P90. Its blinking awesome. Nearly bought one of yours from Ebay Foxy (the 70's Studio from memory), but ended up getting a one year only (till Gibson got cross as they were specced too close to a propper LP)1989 Epi Les Paul (open book headstock, long neck tennon)
Just watching this video thinking, I have watch a ton of your videos and the only difference can detect is this guitar is a little back on the mix. Still sounds fantastic! Expensive guitars are for the player not the listener. And yes it’s ok to play both. Cheers buddy!
It ain't about the guitar, it's about the guitarist.
Hi Gary, that's a nice guitar. About a year and a half back I would have jumped on one of these if I'd seen one up for sale. I was after a guitar with a humbucker at the bridge that I wouldn't have to pay a lot for. I usually play my Harley Benton Gold Top type with P90s but sometimes I want something that will cut through the mix sharp as a knife and that guitar would have fit the bill perfectly. I thought it sounded really good, maybe not as fat as a LP junior but in the end what do you expect for that kind of money. I ended up getting a Tiger Stripe ST style guitar with a single humbucker at the bridge. It sounds great but Mrs Reeldin said if I ever went out for one last gig and played that guitar then she wouldn't be there.
Hi Gary, Thank you for featuring this Maestro Gibson Les Paul Guitar. I wish these guitars were around when I was a kid or in my early teens! What fun you can have by playing one or learning your guitar journey by paying out a few quid on one! Sounds great and plays well! Nice find Gary. A no frills budget, guitar! Cheers Mick 🎉🎸🇬🇧🙏😊
I'm kinda confused... It looks to me less Paul, more of a Gibson. 🤔
Cracking guitar I got one in black and I won't part with it
Hi No Glory :-) I just can't give this one up. It's the only dive bombing trem that I really trust and it looks like a rocketship! I wouldn't mind a bit more power though. Maybe I should invest in a Steel Panther Satchell pedal hahahahaha. Cheers, Gary :-)
I have the SG version, also blue. I put a Hipshot Baby Grand bridge on it, and changed the pickup to a dimarzio tone zone. It's pretty amazing! Great playing by the way.
Hi Gibson Tick :-) Very sensible upgrades IMO and I love the way those Baby Grand bridges look. Make sure you hang onto the originals though! Cheers, Gary:-)
Hi young Gary, I hope you are well. This guitar sounds stunningly good. I thought when you were doing the clean tones you could just hear it warming up as you went to the centre then the neck pickup, and those few extra chords you played in the centre position sounded quite magnificent. Daft question but I'll ask it. These are obviously different pickups that you'd get on a studio so do you think the fact they don't have a chrome cover makes a difference? I remember you showing us a 100th birthday LP about a year ago and I thought that one sounded really special too. When I see these guitars pictured for sale the jury is out for me on the look of them. From just a picture I'm not a fan of the look of the Zebra pickups, and I do like a scratch plate but having said that when you see it hanging on the strap being played then it does look very cool. This guitar is a bargain way to get into owning a proper Gibson so I shouldn't dismiss one as an option just yet.
Hahahaha, hi Rod :-) In my experience the chrome covers are aesthetic only. The 57 Classics as fitted to these are excellent and a little warmer than the 498T and 490R you'd get in a Studio. Not better or worse, just different. I suppose these days with amp modellers and the vast array of pedals on offer you can get pretty much any sound you like though. Horses for courses Rod and don't forget, you can bung chrome covers and a scratchplate on anything if that's your aesthetic preference. Cheers, Gary :-)
Hi Gary, I've got a couple of your listings on my watch list that tick all the boxes if they're still around in mid October then job done. I've got one of your mate Bob's on the list too. Just for future reference Bob has got a few things with Zebra pickups and no scratch plate that I've heard you demo here and sound great. I don't know how far Bob is away from you but just for future reference would it maybe be possible for you to do a few tweaks to something if I wanted the look of it changed before it was shipped. I'd obviously pay you for the parts and work. I'd like to get something that's been through your hands if I possibly can because I'd be sure of getting a good one.
Hi Gary, I've got the SG version of this guitar, with the Steinberger tuners on. Steve from Boston did a short review on the same guitar about 7 years ago, well worth watching. Think I paid about £450 new from Thomanns , would be around 2012 ish me thinks. Cracking guitar for the money.🤟
Hi Chris :-) Blimey, that was cheap! I like Steve from Boston - great channel. I'm busting to have a go on those Seinberger banjo tuners. I keep getting thwarted though. Why does nobody keep them? One day, one day. Cheers, Gary :-)
I got jumbo frets installed on and locking tuners installed on mine and its a rock beast or jazz when you want it and everything else in between, it doesn't hurt to look at either , I'm lucky to have one since they're no longer made !
Hi G W :-) Yes, it's surprising that they're no longer produced. I thought this was a brilliant instrument but I guess they want to stick with the more popular models. The other forgotten Fender that I really loved was the Coronado. Nice upgrades you've made there, too. Cheers, Gary :-)
Hi Gary, I agree with my two previous Colleagues comments! I like the No frills Basic Mahogany Sunburst Finish. I'd swap out the Tuners and Chrome Knobs. That's my only preference. Or leave the Guitar, as it is. Workhorse and not too Expensive to Buy.🎉 Kindest Rgds Mick🎸
Hi Mick :-) I like the 'no frills' approach TBH. Also, I agree with you about the Barrel Knobs - they do look a bit odd. One day I'll get to have a go on something with those banjo tuners! Cheers, Gary :-)
Great abbey road pic there Gary😂. I like the future's, no frills but like a studio they are a workhorse guitar, and for those who are not fortunate enough to be spending big bucks on a more expensive gibbo...Sounds great too! And dang man, you are looking good gary! 💥💥💯💥💥👍🏻
Hi David and thanks :-) Hahahahaha, well spotted - I wasn't sure anyone would notice the Abbey Road background shot. It was from Madame Tussaud's in Blackpool. Yes, they're a workhorse indeed. I bought a new Standard in 1994 and sold it after 20 years because I hadn't played the damn thing in case I hurt it! Give me a 'beater' any day hahahahaha. Cheers, Gary :-)
Hiya Gary a cheap way in getting in the Gibson family they short cut so many items too make them cheaper pickups,no binding cheaper electronics I can see why people buy them I’m not convinced to be honest I think there’s so many cheaper options out there with better appointments take care mate
Hi Graham :-) This weekend we're going to look at the VERY cheapest way to buy a guitar with the Gibson name on the headstock. They usually go out on eBay for well under £200!!!! Take care too Graham. Cheers, Gary :-)
I just picked up one of these and it's missing the Jack-plug output nut. Can you tell me what size nut to order for it please? Great video BTW, very educational 👋
Hi Gavin and thanks :-) This one's long gone now so I'm unable to measure it but usually a 12mm socket is what I use to fit or tighten them up with. You can get the whole thing for £3.25 - here's a link, cheers, Gary :-) www.ebay.co.uk/itm/266721552979?itmmeta=01J38EDTNQB0X2RB539841PHEQ&hash=item3e19d7ea53:g:WYMAAOSwhiZl9HKE&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA4BGJcr%2Bx8APkY27oKWBDE3pqAxF0g3MFlUC1DSs0%2BBBUACFmeah2F0F6IUuB7tiHnS4inhaSyVdGbH131EBC5KT2tUtqhJLci%2F2XVFEPwfsJlWTOpcIC42xbOJ89cx7r5MhXiguKyAkA0LD%2FRKZ1P01CvVS8L3yGJmVKU4JvBPLXLolGJRI5mqaAPfvpkIifbozRCVZXgUM3SX%2BHHIppGT1wfFrnsMc7tTBGRYPEkOsE%2FhiMHeKpj5GxTYoVAJy4KAGJK2WHXqgU%2BL%2Bq4q6%2F16uqXK%2BU%2Bx269ZoxgJbmyh2q%7Ctkp%3ABFBM-Kq3jppk
You’ve cut your hair!!
Hi Keith :-) Yes, a haircut indeed......to go with the new face cut! Cheers, Gary :-)
Epiphones are damm fine guitars! I sold two of em today. Now, I can finally afford a Fender Stratocaster.😅😊
Hahahaha, hi Mr Whitesnake :-) I saw your Mexican Strat video - you looked very happy with it indeed! Cheers, Gary :-)
@@FoxysGuitarShow😎
Fine instrument. Much cause for my son to treasure more his Studio with dot markers, another beaut, as no longer being made. You look fine. Good on you.
Hi Twangnasty and thanks :-) I suspect your lad's Studio will be a 1998 model then. Slap bang in the middle of the 'good wood' era. I'm loving the job they did at the surgery. I'll do a full update in a couple of weeks that'll hopefully help anyone out who's considering the same adventure! Cheers, Gary :-)
Hiya Gary u completely agree with you I’ve got a 2014 epiphany les Paul pro top plus I love that guitar I’ve played proper Gibson £2000 worth I can’t really tell the difference take care mate and have a lovely weekend 👍👍👍👍
Hi Graham :-) Once I'm stood behind a guitar I quickly forget what's written on the headstock. I'm only really interested in whether it plays and sounds ok! Have a great weekend too mate. Cheers, Gary :-)
Hi Gary,Epiphone Guitars have really upped their game over the past few years. They are beautiful instruments in their own right. And are a great alternative to their Gibson Counterparts. If you succeed in finding an Epiphone in Great Condition. I myself own some of the Epiphone Signature Les Paula's, and they are beautifully built Instruments! Well done in showcasing this Very fine Guitar 🎸.kindest Regards! Mick👏.
Hi Mick and thanks :-) Yes, they've really come along in leaps and bounds in recent years. I'm sure that the open book headstock will appeal to many. I remember they used to do it on some of the arch tops and there was the odd Les Paul that got the treatment years and years ago. Cheers, Gary :-)
A very fine demo very nice looking guitar and very fine playing
Hi David and thanks :-) They're lovely guitars these new Epiphones and I particularly like the fact that they've started using the Kalamazoo Open Book headstock with them. More fun and frolics on the way. I'm doing a run of cheapies over the next few weeks. Cheers, Gary :-)
Another fine demo, as you know, Gary. im partial to an Epiphone but only the later versions like this one with the Kalamazoo style headstock. I recall these were near the £500 mark when they came out. Unfortunately they dont hold their price like a Gibson but are well built and are value for money. Having said that, you'll never lose money on A Gibson. See you soon.
Hi Bob and thanks :-) I was just saying to another contributor that I'm looking forward to reviewing one of Epiphone's 57 or 59 reissues. If you think the Classics are pricey take a look at the list price of the reissues! Cheers, Gary :-)
I like the zebra pickups with the gold top!
Hi Gary, what a corker of an instrument this is. I think I've seen this very one up on ebay, either that or one just like it. Not that it makes any difference, it sold very quickly and that doesn't surprise me a bit. One of these would suit me perfectly it ticks all the boxes except the designer label on the headstock. I've never thought of myself as a guitar snob, I play my Harley Benton and love it so maybe Its a sign of me getting old and fussy. At the end of it all this guitar would be just fine for making YT posts at my dining table that not too many click on anyway but come October I'll pay more than double the price of one of these to get the "G" word, maybe it's just me being daft but there you go.
Hi Rod :-) You're not being daft at all and it's like a lot of things in life; if it makes you feel good then it's worth doing. After all, when a chap's worked his conkers off all of his life, he's entitled to a bit of treat now and then! Cheers, Gary :-)
You're right Gary, the newer Epiphones do seem to be closing in on their US owners product lines. About 18 months ago, I picked up a very low mileage Epi 2020 Gold Top 50's spec with the 1957 first year PAF looks and 50's CTS pot wiring. It plays great and is very well finished.
Hi Chris :-) I've heard that those 57 and 59 Epiphone LP reissues are pretty much the pick of the crop. I'll look forward to doing a review when one comes in. The quality's bang on with all of them these days though. Cheers, Gary :-)
Smashing guitar, lovely sound Gary. And dang you are looking darn good brother!💥💥💥
Hi David and thanks :-) There's still a way to go especially with scarring on my eyelids but it's progressing nicely, thanks. Weirdly, I still can't feel my neck - it's like shaving another bloke! Hahahahaha. Cheers, Gary :-)
I like the new Hank Marvin look only needing a red Strat and you're off ! Matey 🤔👍👌🇫🇴
Hahahaha, hi Bill :-) I have a lot of love for Hank. Did I ever tell you I went on a search to find a Hank cock-up. Not a single one to be found anywhere. That man's like a machine......... with stealth bomber timing, too. Cheers, Gary :-)
Thanks Gary, good review I bought an epi ‘60’s LP standard almost on your recommandation ( well as good as ) 300 smackeroos but amazingly good value as far as I can tell it plays beautifully. Nice to see a similar one put through its paces. Mine is an absolutely gorgeous iced tea finish. Thanks again for the video and the tips.
Hi Pete :-) I'm really pleased that you found the review helpful. They're terrific guitars and £300 sounds like a great price. Cheers, Gary :-)
I hope it's not been too painful, it sure looks like it would be! 😬
Hi Karen :-) I forgot to mention the pain aspect in my previous reply so I was pleased to see this comment from you :-) I was awake for the whole thing which took three hours and the time passed so quickly. The surgery team were brilliant and clearly had a great deal of experience. There was virtually no pain either during or after, just about 10 minutes of slight discomfort when they performed the neck liposuction. I've got two weeks worth of progressive photographs so I can do a day by day summary of the most significant period. Cheers, Gary :-)
Wow 🙀! This is a major plot twist on Foxy's Guitar Show!!! Gary when you are all healed up maybe u will do a review of yourself as if a guitar, eg; "He's looking as fabulous as a (vintage) Les Paul!" or "One of a kind w a refurbished headstock, new thin neck, high quality hard-wood (I assume)!" Oh well, lol, I'm sure u get the idea & could think of way better metaphors than me! So, on a more serious note; even though I (& others) think u were perfect as u were, here's to you 🥂 for having the courage to reinvent yourself & making aging 'your b*tch' 💪🤩💪 lol! I pray u have a fast recovery (like over 220 bpm fast🤘)! Please get well soon!💐💐💐 P.S. I wrote this over a week ago but it hadn't sent so trying again. But now I've seen your more recent vids & looks like ur healing well & quick, yayy! 🎉🎉🎉
Hi Karen and thanks :-) I'm really happy with the progress so far. The surgeon reckons you're not fully cooked until around the 6 month mark and obviously age plays a part in how quickly you heal. When all the scarring has gone I'll do a full review of what to expect, costs and the operation itself (which I was awake for!). Cheers, Gary :-)
I picked up one for a little more than $400. Worth every penny and a lot of fun to play. I don’t need it for gigs or impressing anyone. I Just love to play.
Hi Gerald :-) I would confess that this guitar was way better to play than I expected and actually easier to get to grips with than a real one due it's slightly smaller stature. Worth every penny indeed my friend. Cheers, Gary :-)
@@FoxysGuitarShow Cheers!
Who is that handsome chap playing guitar?
Ha! Hi cuzz :-) There's still a way to go but I'm so happy with the progress so far. They reckon 6 months before you're fully cooked. Hope I'm not too knackered to enjoy it by then! Ta-ra a bit :-)
I’ve got the TV Yellow color it’s beautiful. Got this guitar modded as you have here. Only thing is a wider fretboard somewhat odd but you get used to it. Has its own Mojo!
Hi Ed and Sabine :-) I love the extra real estate on the 2015 fretboards. Makes vibrato on the high E so much easier! Cheers, Gary :-)
This was a guitar i rocked hard on, Phil Parisi. 2004-2008 peavey raptor guitar with peavey rage amplifier. 😅
Hi Phil :-) As it goes, I reviewed a white one more recently that was made in Vietnam. It had only come in for a restring but I didn't want to give it back! Cheers, Gary :-)
Very very nice what a lovely tone
Hi Andy :-) It seems they literally don't make them like this any more. Gibson, in their wisdom, have stopped doing the high gloss finishes for 2024. Cheers, Gary :-)
That's a beautiful looking Studio young man, the wine red is such a gorgeous colour. Oh and its absolutely fine without split coil humbuckers which never sound good - they just don't. Get a Strat if you want a single coil sound. 🙂
Hahahahaha, hi Gordon :-) That's exactly where my head is on the subject of split coils on a Gibson! According to the Gibson catalogue we now have to buy a used guitar to get this type of high gloss finish - baffling! Cheers, Gary :-)
Hey Foxy I'm in the market for a 96' studio. 1996 is my birth year haha! What price range do you think is fair for one that is in good condition? Cheers
Hi Ricardo :-) The cheapest 1996 Studio on eBay in the UK is on at £950. There's always a bit of a price hike for models built between the late 80's and very early 2000's as this was known as the "Good Wood" era. Price will always depend on condition and if there's a proper TKL hard case so I'd expect to pay anywhere between £750 - £1,000. Here's a link for the £950 one - they want £50 postage, too. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/226044051317?itmmeta=01J2KDSSKNQV5WRHYRTQMWTDGM&hash=item34a1467f75:g:hxoAAOSwvtVl8cIP&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA0G%2BWRa%2BrnzJLy%2B%2FLipmHnOxyU2OmCi70Wv2%2BXpRkl71ePgXFyLvgwcEY3eJi5T6xfJUNu2xBcyF0vO%2F3NeP1PvGjYuS%2BYD2N8BesKiGHDEcGz4Ende%2BC13ATzk0V07QOlWuSlYx9Ygcre1UmCRzqyOhXaZujHgnK0DDqs5Cr6aI99j8a8nAlwcTWKC53BXnEhTuSrXARm0vFdVFgzrwavNV5UsKKpeHEhdmMjCGkVY6HHC5jX7qCGafFArHJCFHn37c55AIVlJtlKyVXGJ1BAh0%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_KZ5-2UZA Cheers, Gary :-)
Lookin' good sir!
Hi John and thanks :-) There's still a way to go but I'm happy with the progress so far :-) Cheers, Gary :-)
Who are you? And WTAF have you done with old Foxy?
Hahahahahaha, hi Baulder :-) I'll take that as a compliment! There's still some healing left but it seems to be progressing ok. The next step is to find a younger bloke and a set of jump leads hahahahaha. Cheers, Gary :-)
Last weekend just gone, I went to my local ‘bricks and mortar’ guitar shop. Long story short, I ended up trading up to a 2008 wine red Gibson studio with gold hardware. One of those things, picked it up off the shelf and fell in love with it. I don’t know what may or may not have happened to Gibsons in the years that followed that (they get a heck of a lot of bad rap) but mine is a stunning guitar
Hi Dom :-) Wise choice, sir. I know it sounds a bit cheesy but some guitars just seem to 'talk' to you. Most of the ones I listen to all say "Buy ME"! Yes, there were a lot of criticisms about the post 2010 models but TBH I've not come across anything that was terrible. I'm not keen on push/pulls but you're not forced to use them and it's not as though Gibson went out and got an entire useless workforce. Maybe there was a decline in the quality of wood used? They all seem pretty good to me though. Cheers, Gary :-)
I just love that shade of red ("It's a vampire's wet dream"-🧛). The 'lift look's great🤘😊👍.
Hi AhYes and thanks :-) Still some healing left and they reckon about 6 months before it's all settled in. I agree with you about the colour - it's a proper classic claret finish. According to the latest Gibson catalogue you'll have to buy a used guitar if you want this finish - shame, really. who knows, they may bring the high gloss back at some point in the future. Cheers, Gary :-)
Another nice sounding guitar Gary. Like the preppy business school look too.
Hahahahaha, hi Pete and thanks :-) We've got another Les Paul Studio later tonight then I think it's an Epiphone for the weekend. Cheers, Gary :-)
@@FoxysGuitarShow I have a 60’s epiphone les paul coming soon.
I want it done to need info on who does it
Hi Akaski :-) It was The Signature Clinic in Rochdale. They have clinics in other places too and they have a decent website. Cheers, Gary :-)
@@FoxysGuitarShow Thanks for reply, ill check them out
I feel the les paul junior with the signature looks cool
Hi Sophon :-) I don't mind either way but certainly I've had comments that reflect divided opinions on the subject and I've seen a fair few with a laminate or vinyl overlay! Cheers, Gary :-)
yes that sounds very sweet to me very nice.
Hi David and thanks :-) They're excellent guitars and really nice to play. Those pickups are awesome! cheers, Gary :-)
You shouldn't pay anything for it.. Its a illegal fake. And people should be fined that trys and sells or buys them..
Hi Charlie :-) Your comment certainly reflects the feelings of many people on this subject. Personally, I would never intentionally import one from China but I thought it was interesting to look at the differences in construction and that the review may possibly help anyone that was being sold one of these as a genuine Gibson. Cheers, Gary :-)
