      Indeed, the tune is also found in Checkers and an Easter egg in Conversational French (th-cam.com/video/Yo673L5o8lk/w-d-xo.html). I believe the reason it was so popular is that the tune was used to as a 7am alarm during finals week at Caltech, which is the alma mater of a number of the Intellivision developers who worked at APh.

      @@xs656 Nice, if it's one with "Jerrold" on the name plate like this: content.invisioncic.com/r322239/monthly_10_2012/post-26758-0-78236700-1349241615.jpg, we believe it's a pre-production or test market unit. These seem to be rarer than the later General Instrument branded versions like this: static.wikia.nocookie.net/retroconsoles/images/9/9a/PlayCable_front.jpg. There is also a chance the pre-production units were previously owned by Jerrold engineers and have been modded for PlayTape use (one of these has been found in the wild). In your manuals / documentation are there any copies of "Scoreboard" (the PlayCable newsletter), or schedules of which games were due to be played like this one: content.invisioncic.com/r322239/monthly_09_2013/post-25458-0-21287700-1378179388.jpg

    The PlayCable holds no particular nostalgia for me, but the name "Jerrold Electronics" certainly does! Before the age of the ubiquitous television remote, cable subscribers all had huge Jerrorld 'convertor' boxes on their coffee tables with which to tune in their cable channels. Had no idea that they ran a gaming server service across the pond.

    • @decle

      @@decle And I think ONLY is quite true. I'm in Canada, and I never heard of it. (I was already an adult when the Intellivision was launched, so it ewasn't lack of awareness) Surprising as we get so much American advertising on TV here. None the less a cool product and an impressive restoration to get this predecessor to Steam or XBox-Live working off-line all these years later.

    Maybe it was like The Clapper but it responds to any loud sudden sound instead of the sound of the average persons sound of clapping their hands instead of just any sudden loud sound because my and and uncle had a clapper plugged into their garage overhead light and when I would slap my arm it did not respond and only responded to me clapping my hands.

      @tschak909 ปีที่แล้ว

      mind you, this is not a slight against the work that you all have done. This is a reminder that reproducing something in isolation means that it will be lost again. The unique aspect of digital archaeology is that the artifacts preserved, can be studied far easier than other physical artifacts, and given the extremely ephemeral nature of digital artifacts, the only way to combat them not being lost, or permanently locked away in some citadel.

    • @decle
      @decle ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tschak909 I can see and appreciate your point of view. 👍 Trust me, there are a large number of items I'm aware of, but don't have access to, that I would like to have access to, reverse engineer, document, etc. With regard to my efforts, I would argue the following. Firstly, the current state is not necessarily final, opinions may change. If they do, I will make things available. Secondly, these videos serve to document the work, even if it can't be shared at this time, and I think that has value. Items like PlayComp were unknown previously, so having a description and demonstration of them is useful I think. Thirdly, I feel it's important to adhere to individuals wishes, otherwise why would people trust and collaborate with you? And finally, I'm personally unconvinced by some other accepted routes to preservation, such as donating items to museums, which often seems to be blackhole for large amounts of material.

    • @tschak909
      @tschak909 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@decle believe me, I understand the reservations with donating to museums, which I also share. (I've had to deal with it personally, and have seen entire swaths of computing history disappear into unaccountability because the trustees of a museum decided to shut it down. This is why I have taken a much more aggressive mode of action in preservation.)

    Another great capture, decle. And it has the bubbles at the end as well! One thing though, is there any reason why there appears to be an errant note droning at the start of the song? Wow!! I never thought I'd see an actual "PlayCable" device in action again. Well done!! This is a bit different than the PlayCable as I remember it (though the operation of the menus beyond the splash screen is pretty much how I remember it - I tried to recreate it from my almost 40-year-old memory for your Phoenix project, but obviously got it slightly wrong (though mostly right! ;-) ) Anyway, it's interesting (and sad) that this version comes from later in the life of PlayCable (post-'83) and not earlier as it lacks the four different menu songs found in the 1982 version of Play Cable, but at least they can be found on the Music program. If there's ANY way you can share wav files of those songs, I would be most grateful as I haven't heard them beyond my crappy cassette in forty years. Cheers!!
