I would say coming from those that never served in the armed forces that abortion is also murder and a woman’s neglect to properly care for the imbalance she creates by murdering her child and her baby daddy’s child can never be viewed in a good way. Creator wants us to create not destroy. But so many Natives worship the devil and witchcraft nowadays, destruction is prevalent, therefore suicide seen as the only way out. We need alternative behaviors and to nurture our Native youth, help them be successful in life and prosper. Impoverished Reservations are not the ideal environments to do this in.

I am 52 year old Talleyman, an Eastern Cree from Bay James, I have always wondered about the release of tobacco onto the main lake for a safe passage, I understood the concept of lighting sense or dropping tobacco to the ground for a blessed picking of fresh plants to be made by the one cultivating it. My late grandfather gathered his tobacco in a certain river bend on his trap line, we would paddle to it and he would smoke tobacco from the bow of the boat, said a prayer and blew his smoke leaning over the lake where the tobacco would be cultivated from. But when we travelled the big Mistissini Lake, from the narrows, he would grab a hand full of his tobacco and release it onto the lake for a safe passage without a word, I am assuming a silent prayer cause that’s I what I did when he would give me some to release, the lake was intimidating to cross and deserved its ultimate respect. Myself I have never smoked it from the pipe like he did but I know once it is cultivated and touched by man, once it becomes man made, it could be offered as an offering. But I can’t remember when he lit one for the big Lake? I have no intention to start lighting tobacco but I still carry a small bag when I understand the need to release some. I guess I am trying to remember my grandfathers way more now given the circumstances of my modern world now, I am easily distracted by it and thank you for your teachings!
