    A fantastic song, it will be analyzed for years to come. Does anyone else appreciate the intertextuality to Wilfred Owen as an example?

    The memory of D Day, 6 June 44, passed yesterday 6 June 24, and was gone except for the bloody sacrificial altars of dark grey stone called a memorial in our town and cities to the dead, that we should remember (Everyone and All) as the glorious war and the glorious peace that memorials to who them, or even the fallen before therm and no doubt to those to will fall thereafter for a peace that still means war to keep the peace.

    A wee fact for brits born in Scotland. 24% of the military deaths in WW1 were Scots from less than 10% the UK population. Now are you still so proud of being a brit/English.

    I have absolutely loved this song as sung by Ed Trickett of Bok,Trickett, and Muir and have played it over and over, many times one time right after the other. Now I discover this phenomenal performance by the writer and love this as well as the other. The fiddle especially, with the perfect, understated beauty adds so much! She never tries to make it all about her part. Does anyone know who the fiddle player is?

    Eric I absolutely love the songs you wrote. War is so senseless and there never any true winners ! If it was like in the Crusade Times where the kings and the presidents and their MP's and congress' etc all lead the troops into battle you would never see another war . But unfortunately that will never happen. Just like in Vietnam it was mainly the poor kids who fought it. And a very large majority of blacks compared to their percentage of the population. I have friends and family on that wall in DC. Kinda like the corona scamdemic! How many big shot politicians died from that bio weapon ?????

    Copied often - never bettered. I was surprised to find recently that the chorus appears to be lifted from a 1965 Johnny Cash song Street of Loredo. Going further back, apparently the tune originated as a late-eighteenth-century Irish ballad about a dying soldier who regretted his unruly ways. Then beat the drum slowly, play the Fife lowly. Play the dead march as you carry me along. Take me to the green valley, lay the sod o'er me I'm a young cowboy and I know I've done wrong

    Beautiful song. I learned not long ago that my great, great uncle 'joined the great fallen of 1916' from wounds he sustained on the first day of the Somme. He was lost to the family for many years until my uncle discovered him while doing some family-tree research. Thankfully he is now remembered and my uncle travelled to France to put flowers on his grave.

      @mattday " Beautiful song. I learned not long ago t..." It's a song for the Commonwealth, not just Australia. The Empire was at war. Like it or not, our origins are in the Empire. I had, as a younger man, and still do, an interest in WW 1 aviation. A bloke, part of our interest group, went back to Britain and sprinkled soil from Queensland on the grave of Stan Dallas, an RNAS pilot, no relation.

    I first heard this song as a student in Canada on Remembrance Day. It was on the radio in 1984. Never forgot it but never knew the title. Searched for it years later using remembered lyrics and so grateful to have found it. Beautiful and haunting.

    The voice, the lyrics, the emotion. We never acknowledge the true costs of war. And we never acknowledge who actually benefits from war, and they just go on to enjoy their riches gained by the blood of the men.

    300,000 people died at the Battle of the Somme. That's about the population of Irving, CA (or Cincinnati, OH). In one battle, which was tactically inclusive and had virtually no effect on the outcome of the war. 😞

    I wish they hadn’t answered the call and defend their country. We, the people, are tired of the sick imaginings and fantasies of politicians and businessmen, who believe that they can gain (wealth, prestige, land) by killing others. Politicians and leaders, if you desire war so much, take place on the front, it removes your veil of romanticism instantly. We gain nothing from violence, fear or hatred but more violence, fear and hatred. If we are to end war, we must stop listening to those who send us there in the first place. We, the people desire peace, and nothing but peace. Earth is the only place in our solar system where we can breathe. Let us breathe together instead of suffocating each other, share the air and land equally. We may appear in many shapes, colours and forms, but we all have a beating heart that longs for happiness. This is the only call we will answer.

    • @redryderaus
      @redryderaus ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you really think that if they didn't "Answer the call" that the war would not have happened? Do you really think the Germans would have just gone "Oh OK, if you're not going to fight we'll go home then". Yes the war was caused by people who dreamed of power and control. They sent the commoner out to fight for their fantasies. Should the commoner in the other country just lay down their weapons? France did that twice, look at how that ended up. You shamed yourself in front of millions who lost their lives protecting their families and their homes. Those that "Answered the call" deserve our respect, not your fantasy view of the world. 😡
