In this tutorial I create a gritty noise bass that is commonly heard in Drum & Bass Bass and other EDM songs. I'm doing this within Kilohearts' Phase Plant VST within my DAW (Logic Pro X) to utilize both the analog (sine) and noise generators heavily distorted to create a gritty punch. I also added a multi-pass element to refine the sound. Please feel free to put any questions or remarks in the...

Old video but very helpful thanks bro
Can you put anather video to noo more 💕
how do i put cat on cf card
cat?
Very helpful, thank you!
Glad the video could help! :) thanks for watching
really good information thanks Jeff
glad you got something out of this! :D thanks for watching
I was being facetious my boy, I mean the 5 seconds of the actual beat wasn’t terrible. But to try an simplify making a beat like this is wild. It’s extremely disrespectful to the craft. Get a drum machine with god hits? That alone sounds crazy ta me.that’s a sampler not a drum machine GOD. I’m not even trying ta be disrespectful ☀️, but you oversimplifying the whole process. Lol
I certainly mean no disrespect to the craft. I enjoy making music! In many videos to come I plan on breaking down my process more. I appreciate your input and will take that into account moving forward. Gathering drum hits is a whole process. Importing it to my compact flash card is another. Lining that signal into my audio interface in combination with the turntable signal is the next step. Choosing a DAW and recording is entirely another. I’m just testing the waters seeing what folks like or don’t like so again I appreciate your input 🙏
@@JeffAlberts91 All good ☀️. I see you got love for the craft with your response. There are just a lot of people that make it seem like they can be premo or the heat makerz like it’s nothing. Like there’s not so much more involved in sampling than meets the eye. If you know then you feel me. Apologies for coming at your neck like that. 🙏🏽
@@user-bd1iu7nq6m I appreciate you taking the time to hear me out. But I hear you, I see videos so often of a vst or sampler that will do xyz, and it’s just an ad for some bs. I want to try my best to make some good, real music and approach sampling in my own methodical way. thanks again for keeping it real.
@@JeffAlberts91 Werd, best advice is study the greats. All of them from the start of this hip hop shit.
Yea, it’s that simple. Your the next Alchemist for sure. Lmaooo
Glad you enjoyed it my friend! Thanks for watching 🙏
Sounds Like you on your way to bringing the Hip and Hop Back to the Streets. Salute! I see the 2000xl in Motion King. No need for a startup disk as the Previous. I like how you said Obscure Record like not what everybody Samples. Keep Grinding Maybe we can Link up on Something 100!
Thank you for spotting the mpc! Real ones know. The more obscure the better, gotta keep it underground. Let's link up on a beat if you're down.

Sounds more like lofi
the final track turned out more like a 90's boom bap track after all the tracking-out and layering. but even if it sounds more lofi to you (which i totally understand), is lofi not a sub-genre of hip-hop?
Love that evil bass and horror theme stuff in general. Thx man
Glad you enjoy it! I really enjoy playing with this scary tones and fx. Thanks for watching 🙏
super helpful! thank you! :-)
Thanks for watching Will! 🙏
This and the peculiar friends track both have a dope sound to them! Are they made on a 404OG? Either way good work man!
Yes they were! Lots of time refining and organizing samples. So much fun to put together.
@@JeffAlberts91 Good work man!
@@JeffAlberts91 The drums sound amazing
I am glad to inform you that the problem is now solved. Thanks from JAPAN🙏
How was this issue solved? Glad to hear!
Thanks
I’m trying to put full ish beats at 2-3 minutes in the machine to do a beat set like Teebs or Dibiase or Ras G. Is there something I’m missing? I did it following along to this. Thanks!
It depends on which signals you are sampling. I would throw samples on a compact flash card and load them into the SP-404 at the proper bpm. After you load each sound or loop into a corresponding bank you can combine your samples to create layers for each bank and then switching between them should be seamless depending on how you loop it.
@@JeffAlberts91 I have a bunch of beats on my 128mb card but when i go to import them to a bank it only loads 3 of them. They aren't long either only about 2 minutes and the biggest sized file is 15mb
@@JeffAlberts91 Thank you for your reply!
@@JeffAlberts91 now when i delete the beats that did import off the card and go to put more in it keeps importing a beat that isn't even on the card...
thank you! this is going to make my workflow so much better. had the 404 for years but just got the compact flash reader and a nice roland 8 gig memory card. upgrade season! thanks again
Glad you found this helpful! Link me with your beats / projects I’d love to take a listen 🙏

Hi everyone. Do you know if there is some reliable app for organizing samples, as the Sample wave converter for the SP 404 SX? Or, is it possible to define specific file names on file system in order to know which pad will contain a certain sample? Thanks!
Did you figure it out
@@JJ-vp3bd unluckily not... not so much time to spend on it, so I did the classic file import using the sampler function.
@@manucontrovento the one that came with the cd?
Thanks a bunch I liked ur partner they were really cool and helpful
That sounds amazing
Need MOAR!!
What do I do if it doesn’t load all my samples into the banks? It loads about 7 and that’s about it even though I have way more samples in the folder
i would go back and check the bitrate of each sample and make sure it's 16 bit. otherwise you should refer to the manual if that's still not working.
Thanks!
How do you take files off the compact flash card from the sp back into the computer? Trying to take the file ive imported on back off but now with the rolands effects added.
Is it the same with a 404a?
Nate .C I believe so! I’m not %100 sure though. Look up the manual online for confirmation.
Alright! Thank you buddy .
Yo what do you use to plug the flash card into the laptop?
any CompactFlash Card to USB reader will work.
This might help, I put sounds on my card, then couldn't pull anything up when I wanted to sample anything. Also, when I try to sample from my phone, I can't seem to record anything. I have no clue what I'm doing lol help please?
how to get 404og sounds from compact flash to 404sx?
Hey thanks for this. I have the sp404sx. Is sp404 better?
no the sx is newer and has SD card not CF
Good video. Can the 404a be used with the 404sx software?
Hi Jeff ! Can you Import a hole song ?
it depends on the memory left of your card, but usually, yes, I imported samples of 4 or 5 minutes
Thank you for this video. Is it also possible to directly copy on the computer the files into the right bank / pad (without need to do the internal importing procedure on the SP-404A?) 1. open the folder ROLAND/SP-404A/SMPL 2. copy / exchange the files according to the file name logic (A0000001.WAV A0000002.WAV : A0000012.WAV B0000001.WAV : J0000012.WAV) [see manual for this filename logic] Would be nice if this worked like this because then there is no need to do the internal importing procedure. Or is there other information treated as well with the internal importing procedure (in addition to just copy-pasting the wav files to the respective internal bank / pads)? Thanks for this, it will help a lot! Thanks!
Dies thus work
thank you needed this for my mpc 1000
Do they load in order from how they are on the computer file? Like does the 1c load from the top file on your computer and so on? Like 1c, top file, 2c, the file below the top file, in that order?
Nathan Coleman that’s exactly right. I’m believe it prioritizes it alphabetically/alphanumerically. I’ve had this machine for a year and I’m still learning some of these nuances and limits. Hope the video helped!
To y'all : the compatibility check on the beginning also involve the sample rate, be aware to import 44.100 files as it is the samplerate that works on the 404, otherwise you'll get slowed down or pitched sound. Thanks for the tutorial g !
mago exactly! Sometimes those pitched down samples can make for good accidental layers :) Otherwise you’re %100 correct!
Thank you for this one, saved me sometime :)
Thx Jeff , great video ! i have some problem anyway, probly you or somebody else encountered. So i was importing some loops 3-6 sec long, and SP stops importing after 5th pad , saying "FUL". The CF i formatted , so its clean and its 1Gb, the files themselves all together are just 5 Mb. If I check the remaining time it says 380 minutes left. I tried to resample to different pads and banks , as well on A and B , still it stops with the same message. Any ideas?
yeah man same thing happened to me, did u ever find a solution to this?
Did the cat produce any tracks?
Tim yes indeed 😸
Thanks a lot! Do you know a way to scroll through the samples on the flash card? For example I got 100 kickdrums on the flash card and I want to try the first, the second etc. on one pad. In other words: Is there a way to load samples from the card without exchanging them all?
pyjama bay I have been researching ways to select different samples, but I haven’t found a solution to that issue yet. It seems we are limited to the alphabetic order of our files on the card in relation to banks C through J. I will keep you posted if I find out more!
Great tutorial! Do you know if once the files have been successfully been imported, can you then remove the source files from the root folder of the card to free up space?
litewrite Thanks for watching! I don’t believe so, unfortunately. Banks C through J are representative of the card space/data, so I would not remove those sounds from the original card without placing those sounds on banks A or B. Hope this helped!
@@JeffAlberts91 Yes - super helpful - I'll give it a try - thanks!
On SX model it moves original files by default, its different shortcut (Func+3) and there is an import folder on the SD card, so samples do not go on the root of the card...
@@JeffAlberts91 he meant in the root folder of the card, and yes, you can delete the original archives you put there once you imported them, even in C - J banks
yes you can!
hey i have a question, everytime i want to record the samples from the card to the machine, i do exactly the same u are doing and finallz when i press REC, appears a code in the screen saying: U n 5, u know why, is maybe the card not compatible with the sampler??
UnS - means unsupported file format. as far as i know, samples should be wav or aif, 8 or 16 bit , 44.1 khz sample rate .
@@dj_balans Do you know how to change the bit rate and sample rate? I am also getting the UnS message when I try to import Wav samples from my computer onto the CF card
ABSENTMINDSTATE well i guess the only way i know, is to convert files in DAW to the right rate and bit
Клим Лосовский thank u! I changed them to 16 bit. They were at 32
@@absentmindstate use something like AUDACITY on the PC to load and export the wavs in the correct format
thank you. just copped an OG 404 and this video helped alot.
glad it was helpful! have fun with it.
This was helpful thanks bruh
thanks dude
Mike Dekeyser no problem homie.
Can the 404a accept SD cards? And if so can it support 32 gbs??
Yes it can.
Everything was working until I tried to import then it would say EnP meaning "empty", but the files were there. So I re-formatted the card, then sent the files back to the root and now it imports just fine. Hope this helps others.
digitaljosh good call josh, thanks for your contribution!
