    I can’t believe the timing of this video! I literally have my chemicals warming for developing my first silver gelatin negatives as I watched it. I thought I would give this a try while I wait for my calotype chemicals to arrive from B&S.

    Thanks Tim! Great stuff. I've been using paper negatives off and on for a couple years now, with good results. It started when I was looking for a less expensive film substitute, but I like the results for what they are. There are a few things still on my list to try. One is to use contrast filters to tame the short range of paper. I don't see why putting the sheet into a film holder is any different from putting it onto the enlarger's easel... Another thing I've not yet tried is to pull the paper out of the developer early, not letting it reach full black. I'm hoping that would help preserve highlights, like in the sky. Great stuff, looking forward to next time.

    Tim, I do contact printing as well and I use my Saunders LPL enlarger as a light source. I also use a lux meter to get reproducible light intensity. But I find that some prints need more or less light than others do. I guess that depends on the density range of the negative. I also use 3/8" glass to hold down the negative, but I notice that portions of the resulting print are slightly out of focus. I couldn't figure out why at first, but then I repeated the same exposure using my contact frame for the same negative and the whole print is sharp. Have you had this experience? It must have to do with the weight of the glass on top of the paper that I am exposing. Thanks.

    • @TimLaytonDarkroomDiary
      @TimLaytonDarkroomDiary 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, I have not had that issue on my side, but it does make sense how that could happen based on the thickness of the heavier glass. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Wow, after 15 years of pt/pd printing I never thought about checking the ph level of my PO developer. Great tip! For those that use Tween, it's also helpful to add a bit of oxalic acid to it since this solution is alkaline.

    I was expecting to hear cautionary notes regarding some of the chemicals we may encounter for certain processes, but daily care is just as important. Yes, photography is often physically demanding. I work with a portrait photographer, and we often set up studio lighting on location. Lights, stands, sandbags, etc, that all adds up! Thanks for the reminder.

    Another question for you. Have you experimented with the silver gelatin paper negatives for making other alt-process prints? I currently do Kallitype and Argyrotuypes. I have tried this, but not with exhaustive testing. Not 100% satisfied yet with results (again using glossy silver gelatin). Maybe fiber based paper will allow UV light through better than glossy?

    • @TimLaytonDarkroomDiary
      @TimLaytonDarkroomDiary 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi, yes, I have created extensive bodies of work using silver gelatin paper as my negative medium. I use it extensively with my ULF cameras making everything from the obvious silver gelatin and silver chloride contact prints to even historic prints like platinum, kallitype, etc. Your question is very timely because I am starting a new series next week where I am using my 5x7 Graflex loaded with 12 sheets of silver gelatin paper for my negative and I am going to make a variety of print types from them and discuss all the details along the way. If you are a Darkroom Diary Premium Member, I go a lot deeper on the technical details and host live video sessions to discuss/review, etc. In case you are interested, here is the link to join - timlaytonfineart.com/membership-join/

    Very fascinating episode. What caught my ear was the use of fiber paper as a paper negative. I have been shooting my paper negatives on ilford glossy papers for the past year as this is what most everyone seems to do. But after listening to this I will give fiber paper a try. I always heard that the the fiber paper would be a little softer that glossy, and that the fiber texture would show (I scan negatives and also use the paper negatives themselves for contact prints). Has this been your observation? I will look forward to your comparison of the different types of paper.

    Hi Tim, Another great guide to photography and life. It is amazing how life can change your perspective on everything. I was trained as a "traditional" fine art landscape photographer whose main goal was to create the technically perfect image and print. Sure, I did some corporate photography at each company I worked at, but the main goal was perfection. I used film back in those days which is actually the best teaching classroom. Then the iPhone came along and I began playing with what would have been called silliness. As digital cameras came along I found myself still concentrating on the perfect image, even though I could take a few thousand images. Then life happens, one of my daughters lost her husband, and then shortly after, my wife passed away due to cancer. Everything changed. I got into a few grief groups which helped tremendously and one of the first things that helped is meditation. You are right, it is not easy at first. One of the grief groups I was in used art as therapy. So naturally I used my photography background to create some images of my feelings. That was very new to me as before, everything was planned out and calculated to the ultimate. This project was totally emotional. I used one of my 4x5 cameras and a peel-apart film called New55. This was a startup company trying to make something like the old Polaroid Type 55 film. Unfortunately, both are gone. However, it was the perfect film to convey an unperfect image that spoke to me. So the bottom line is, you can have life-changing events walk you through learning all of the steps you are talking about, which I do not recommend, or you can listen to Tim here on this channel and move ahead of the class so to speak.

    That is a great test Tim! It is always good to have options, especially with safer chemicals. Now you have me thinking of mixing two together for a blend, trying to keep some of the density but maybe have a wider range of tones?

    • @TimLaytonDarkroomDiary
      @TimLaytonDarkroomDiary 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Excellent idea. Also, you can vary the dilution ratio of the developers too. For example, Potassium Oxalate is typically mixed at 35% and Ammonium and Sodium Citrate are usually mixed between 20% to 35% dilutions. By varying those, plus testing at different temperatures, you will likely discover something new and exciting that fits with your work. Keep me posted!

      Hi, I was thinking the same thing about it could possibly benefit from a little more exposure. You now have an excess of wax on the negative. The next step is to place the negative between two sheets of blotting paper and go over it with a warm iron. The blotting paper will absorb the excess wax, you may have to do this a second time with fresh blotting paper.

      @@TimLaytonDarkroomDiary Excepting my iPhone, photography's been on hold and will be on hold for a while, though I have a long list of projects I want to try when circumstances are better for them: ULF, stereo, get my OM-1 refurbed, film making, various alt print processes, perhaps even brief excursions into wetplate and dags (probably workshops for bragging rights more than long term interest). I enjoy the videos and your work. The chemist in me felt compelled to say, "yes, you remembered correctly" about Potassium Nitrate.

    Lovely process! (Hello Tim, I'm the guy who bought the Nikkor SW150 8x10 lens from you a while back!!) Quick question: how do you get focal-plane registration correct with using the glass-plate sandwich technique for the paper in the plate-holder? For other calotype variants (e.g. Pélegry) I understand people tape the paper to the front of a board in the plate holder? (I don't actually have a plate-holder so I'm struggling to understand how this works: it may not be a problem at all.) I'm always up for a challenge (with least chemical hazard) and calotype seems next logical step on my LF alt-pro journey, time-permitting.

      Hi David, always good to hear from you. Thanks for watching and commenting. The holders used are regular wet plate holders and I sandwich the calotype between two thin sheets of glass. The registration works out perfectly, just like wet plate, so no worries about that thankfully. I think you would really enjoy the calotype process. I have a lot of new videos coming up that share the process in detail and I will be hosting some live shows in the near future as well that I think you will enjoy. Stay in touch.

      @@TimLaytonDarkroomDiary Thanks Tim: the focal plane tolerances perhaps become a bit looser the larger the format you go! A couple of mm probably doesn't make too much difference.

      Hi, I am not making prints for this series, the calotype is the final artwork. I am making videos right now where I have the calotype mounted and I will be discussing the narratrive of the work and sharing the artist motivations, etc. I think you will enjoy this. These videos are all about the process (behind the scenes) and the subsequent videos are about the the art. Thanks for commeing and sharing. I appreciate it.

      Thanks Michael. Now, it is full steam ahead with using the DIY glass coating rods on the Vellum paper that is available in 19x24 sheets. We know this works based on the 8x10 coating tests, so now it is just waiting for the Amazon delivery so I can start coating 14x17 ULF Calotypes...

    Great setup. I’m curious how you’re developing ultra large papers from 20x30 up. Are you using print drums or trays. I’ve been trying to track down for 20x30 for a while now myself

    • @TimLaytonDarkroomDiary

      Hi Jeff. I have large trays all the way up to 40x50. For my ULF contact prints, I only go up to 20x24 and those trays are very common as you probably know.

    A beautiful image, Tim. What are the advantages of using Ilford warm-tone paper as the negative, given that it is more expensive than the non-warm-tone equivalent (at least here in the UK) and the paper tint will be determined by the positive not the negative ?

    • @TimLaytonDarkroomDiary
      @TimLaytonDarkroomDiary 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Kevin. I have tested just about every silver gelatin paper that I can think of over the last 5 years to use as a negative and I found that Ilford Warmtone Semi-Matt gives me the best tonal range and rendering by far. The second best is Ilford Class Matte. Both in fiber of course and not RC. I develop in Ilford Multi-grade 1:30 by inspection with a normal development in the 2 minute range at 20C. If you purcahse the paper in 50 packs in the USA, the cost comes down to about $7 a sheet vs. $25 for Ilford FP4 or HP5. I am also currently testing a new blue half-speed X-Ray film in my 14x17 to see how it compares to the paper. I will be sharing that series coming up shortly. I am not sure if you are a Darkroom Diary Member or not, but I share all the technical details and workflows with members which it sounds like would be helpful for you.
