After a shaky start Bach gets a further workover. Day 3 of my one year learn to play piano challenge. Come on TH-cam keep me accountable :)
Day 1 Beginner Piano Progression One Year Challenge
มุมมอง 94ปีที่แล้ว
The first day of my challenge to play the piano every day for a year. I have started with Bach Prelude No 1 in C Major. My first classical piece. And I'm leaning the changes to Loves Train recently covered by Silk Sonic, for something more contemporary.
Can't play piano. Don't read music. Clueless. One year challenge.

Love your posts and thanks for taking time and effort to make and post them👍👍👍👏👏👏 What are your thoughts on the yousician app👍👍
Thanks! Yousician was the first I tried and I want to revisit it to do a review. I can’t remember much of it. I didn’t attempt reading music, which is what I’m keen to try, but used their numbering system which is good if you want that. Overall I thought it a good app but at times I felt I got bogged down in a piece I wasn’t enjoying so preferred SP from that perspective.
A year later, would you choose Simply over any of the other ones? Or is there something even better?
I’ve tried three SP, Youcisian and Flowkey. If I had to choose one I’d go with SP
That "active development team" are heavily iphone/ipad biased. The Android version is missing many of the features from the IOS.
Sadly often the way with music apps. Thanks sharing. It would be good to know if similar compromises are made on other apps
I’m brand new to piano but had a couple keyboard lessons as a child but didn’t go very far at all and can’t yet read music but haven’t really tried. Now I want to try and learn to read music without the letters ect and play for real songs like Hallelujah, which app do you recommend ? Xx
I’ve only had experience of Flowkey, Simply Piano and Yousician. Flowkey is good in that they don’t use any additional letters/notes alongside the notes. To help you with positioning they rely on the video of the hands below the staff. Quite a good system but flowkey doesn’t have a strong course outline if you want that. Just songs to learn. Simply piano has that and is quite good at helping you learn to read music. It does come with numbering in places to help you with hand positioning. You can’t turn that off unfortunately but they also have a sheet music view that presents the score as you would sheet music. From memory that view is without numbering so you could have the best of both worlds. Downside is that this view the notes are quite small. You would want a tablet over a phone. Yousician has options to learn with or without music notes. I preferred SP over it though. You could start by checking trough trial versions which has most of the music you want to learn. Hope that helps
Great video! It’s also sad that it doesn’t have a metronome to help you keep in time/rhythm
The background music does produce a strong beat, but yeah you would think a simple feature to implement
Once my kids got to the chords lessons, I bought a midi cable to attach ipad to our digital piano. Without the cable it struggles to accurately grade your playing of chords and melodies that chamge quickly. With a cable you get marked down for every single wrong note you played. Which certainly took adjustment for the kids, who had gotten used to getting 3 stars even with quite a few mistakes. I subscribed for a couple years for my four children. My wife and I had done some basic lessons with the oldest two. It helped a lot with my kids timing and rhythm, and overall the kids used it enough that it was fantastic value for $$.
Yes I think it’s a pretty good app for kids to use. And yes you really need the midi cable to get the most from it. Thanks for sharing your experiences with everyone here
Thanks for the great review. Subbed.
For everyone who is looking for a discount on simply piano, here is how their marketing seems to work: you sign up for free trial, then wait for them to offer a discount when you don’t buy the package for a while. I just received email with 50% offer and I’m probably going to accept.
This was very helpful! Thanks! I was trying Skoove for a bit until it wanted me to pay. haha. Now I'm trying to figure out which is the best for my beginner 10 year old, before I take the plunge! Do you know if Simply Piano ever offers discounts to buy a subscription? That might help sway me lol!
Never seen a discount for it, but it’s not something I often check. Not tried Skoove but it’s one I have thought about reviewing. I’d say SP is relatively child friendly. Try them out on a trial. You only get a week but the first module remained unlocked at the end of that week - at least that was the case about a year ago.
I found some of the exercises too fast, and I made so many mistakes, but it forced through. I could not find a way to go to what I needed to practice. It made me go all the way back, I do enjoy the 5 min practices. Overall, I am enjoying the app
Thanks for sharing your experiences. You can just force your way through at times
Thanks! What's the point of an app that doesn't correct your mistakes and lets you play badly!? Not good, IMO... ??🤔
If they just made the mistakes tolerance adjustable it would be awesome
That is odd about stopping the music before the end? 😮It won't be copyright, just doesn't make sense? That puts me off TBH and it only gives you one option, intimidate? No pro choice? Weird.
Agreed. For me it was where they chose to end it that was strange
The only problem I had with Simply Piano is that it does not hear you play. The mic does not come on the iPad.
That’s a good point. It’s really best with midi input
Thanks for the review. I would have like to seen some more info about how the app actually works. Is it iOS and Mac? Also I only have an Akai MPK Mini MK3 so it's a tiny keyboard, would the app work with that? I was shocked to see your low subscriber count. You are a natural at this, keep going! I subscribed!
Thanks for subbing in. I’m not familiar with that keyboard but the app works with any that can play sounds aloud. Having said that, to get the best out of the app it’s best to use midi input. Have a look and see if your keyboard has midi outputs on the back. You can then plug from that into your phone or tablet and you are away laughing. If not you can still use it with a speaker output from the keyboard but other room noise may interfere with the note recognition. It’s basically using sound waves generated by your keyboard rather than digital information via the midi so might not be as perfect all the time.
I it’s just iOS and possibly android through the app stores
They took your advice. The keyboard I bought at Walmart came with a 2 week trial. Basic beginner here at 65. What I dont like are the numbers it gives you on the sheet music. I find myself cheating and I dont want to play by numbers. I want to learn the notes. I wish I could remove that. Also, after the 1 or 2 week trial do they offer more content or is it all the same if you pay the $149 for the year. Thank you.
Glad you took the plunge :). Yes that numbers issue is annoying for some. I know others like it because as the pieces get more complex how you position your hands is important. You could try the sheet music view. I think that may not have numbers. You could also trial flowkey as they just show you a video of the hand movements below the score instead of using numbers. No I think the trial version gives you full assess to all content. Let me know what you decide and how it goes with your learning journey
@@pianocam Thank you for your thorough reply. I will let you know.
I don't get it. Numbers are for fingering. Is it really cheating to know which finger to use? When I try to decypher a sheet music, I'm always glad to find fingering numbers to find good hand placement.
Thanks a lot, best piano app reviews i've found on YT. Be good to here more about how you progress and what else you are using! I am going through Alfreds but might try flowkey for a bit of fun. One problem i've had is I need to play at night with headphones, so it doesnt seem there is a way to connect the audio all in one from app to piano.
Thanks for the encouragement. I haven’t heard of Alfreds. Will have to take a look. Yes I remember trying to solve a similar problem by attempting to pair my headphones with my tablet and the keyboard with the app via midi. Think it may have worked for SP, can’t remember for flowkey. The experience was not as good
I’ll have to do an update on my channel soon. I’ve been juggling some big life changes of late which makes practice a challenge. But I also remind myself to keep going even when I haven’t played for a while. Thanks :)
What about Yousician?
I’m thinking that one is next
@@pianocam I’ll look forward to it.
I have an acoustic piano, and the note recognition is absolutely awful, to the point were i am pressing the same key 10 times and it doesn't input it. I hope they fix it because i really want to try the app
That must be frustrating. I wonder if other apps are any better, or if with these apps midi is really the only viable option?
I know how to play fur Elise kinda when I tried to it said I was doing it completely wrong
I found it helps to have earphones on so the app doesn’t confuse itself with its own music.
Note recognition technology struggles with overtones - C note will contain G and E and D and more, so recognizing sound waves it really tricky. But I thought the tech had improved a lot in this respect. I am finding simply piano very confusing to use because it confuses voice, piano, C and D. What’s the point? Too confusing for a child. MIDI cable remains the only tried and true method.
Hello! Thank you for this review! I am also an “older” person learning piano and there r so many apps to choose from. Have you tried Playground Sessions? Im currently using that one but am going to sign up to Flow Key also because of your review! Thanks mate!
Hi! I haven’t heard of it but I can see it there in the App Store. Looks interesting. Tell me one good and bad thing about your experience using it? I will do more reviews on this channel and ask my subs which app to do next. I can add that to the list. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers
This was very helpful thank you. I would have loved if you included the prices, but interesting commentary on the app. :)
You’re welcome :)
Hello Cam! Hope you are doing well! I wanted to reach out in order to propose a partnership with Tomplay. What's the best way to contact you directly? 🎹
Hi, sorry for the slow reply. Yes please send your proposal to itscameronblair@gmail.com
thank you so much for ur feedback! im a beginner wanting to play the piano and wasnt sure which app to buy since i couldnt get a private teacher, so thank you!
Which one did you go with?
@@pianocam i decided to use simply piano since it was the one that worked best with me😊
but tbh i do struggle a bit but i noticed that im slowly improving playing the sheet music!
Your review matched my experience pretty accurately. I grew to really hate the "ding" at the end of a section where I felt like I had failed. And when that happens you have to start the entire section over and retread sometimes very long sections you didn't have an issue with. I also really hate the "practice" mode which for me on Android had no options - it was incredibly ploddingly slow and never practiced what I actually had problems with: playing tricky sections at speed. And yes they are extremely lenient and ignore whole classes of errors, I once cheated past a song I disliked by mashing all the keys... Beside all the annoyances, issues, and not holding be to a high standard, I thought the courses were mostly decent and it kept me challenged and engaged most of the time.
Ha I relate to mashing the keys to get through bits you don’t enjoy. Or the other trick is to focus on the hand playing the most notes (usually the right hand) and forget about playing both hands together
Yes! ..That was EXACTLY my issue: as a beginner absolutely just learning, I soon found that it was not really helping enforce what’s taught and gives you a wholehearted “high five” regardless how horribly I/we messed up. I found this very frustrating absolutely to the point I got a refund for the 3m family plan, for other reasons as well. ..Now, don’t get me wrong, but as you said, it “does” teach a lot and many little things and that’s great. The issue though is that it keeps moving at a pace that if you do not stop, repeat what was went over(you must think to do this as nowhere does it tell us to practice these things, but ofc practice is obviously something needed/must be done and to do) ..it just keeps going regardless minor or some major flaws or no time to have practiced the lesson before moving on, and puts you long term in a spot where you, as I ..thought I should know at least one song ..but no, not even! I’m hard pressed to remember teachings from here, as it’s very much a “keep going” type thing with its motivational aspect, but this makes lessons pass over to quickly and not enough practice, then I found I learn better just taking it as it is and using it as I feel needed, not following how they want it used, as there’s lots to learn and so much practice required. So, what is not going to be memorable or, I do practice, but there’s just no feedback on timing or ..I really am still VERY much a beginner, and I’ve used this since early February, I believe. This app really needs to be more clear in certain things, for example: I was using “numbers” to know what keys to press, at first(nice to know what digits, but also what keys/notes they are: for this I had to mark every key on my keyboard), ..and NOT the actual Key(C, D, E, F, G, A or B) so what I mean is while reading the music, trying to learn, using numbers for my fingers and then having to personally relay what key it is, and keep this in mind while beginning, makes things SO very difficult and a tad confusing especially for absolute beginners, more frustration than need be in my opinion. I’m just glad they DO have a section especially to learn chords, and these include the key notes, not just telling me what finger to use and calling them numbers, and confusing me when referring to numbers, that are letters which are notes required to play, I got flustered. - I do hope that makes sense lol. -Decent beginners guide I must admit: but, the player learning must know to do certain things that are not at all mentioned or brought up, easiest example is practice, regardless a certain part or piece is able to be practiced 1000’s of times over: I wish they’d just say that. I learned about all this the hard way and it costed me valuable time. I hope this helps others, and I’m not “hating on SP” I just do not like the way things started off, personally or how I seemingly wasted time, simply by not having the right info where or when needed, as I flew through one lesson after another and could and still cannot play a single song! 🤷🏼♂️ - Good luck in your musical adventures, everyone, and hats off to you in the video, sir! 🤘🏼😎
I totally relate to much of what you have said. You are right in that after a number of months using the app I still don’t have a song I would count as learnt - as in if someone asked me to play them something I don’t have a song from SP I know well enough to play
having watched both your flowkey and simply piano reviews, which i enjoyed, i now am very confused which to get. haha
Ha nice one! If you want an app that feels more like a tuition course, I’d say go with Simply Piano. If you just want to learn some new songs then Flowkey. For the record Simply Piano is the one I currently use and I think it’s pretty good but I’m very focused on improving skills rather than knowing loads of songs.
Thank you. I wanna focus on learning how to play the piano so I guess it’s simply piano then.
That’s the one
.
.
.
As a beginner, one thing I like about Simply Piano is that it's very friendly when it comes to denoting hand positions and fingering in the sheet music. Not really seeing much of that here. Is that something you have the option to turn on and off in Flowkey?
I have same problem jumping from Simply piano to Flowkey, not much fingering at all, just brought a Yamaha piano and got the Flowkey app for 3 month trial, 3 days into it and I am scratching my hand trying to work out which finger to use every time i try the same song again and again. Flowkey needs a function to turn On/Off to give at least some hint of finger number to attract more begginer players. At least for me at the moment no hint of finger numbering, forget about me joining Flowkey for a full year subscription. They do have their PRO, in terms of more variety of sheet music, simply piano was just too simple.
A fair point. I guess flowkey would say you don’t need the numbering because you can just look at the hand positions underneath. But then in the moment this become a bit difficult to do - glancing down all the time.
Why did you decide to switch from simply piano? I’m currently using Simply piano and I’m quite impressed with it. Will look to add a review shortly
@@pianocam I haven't switched yet, because my subscription still has time on it, but in the meantime, I wanted to do some fact-finding. I do like the Simply Piano app, but my dissatisfaction has to do with the various "feature testing" that they do. It's very upsetting to be in the Facebook group and see everyone else posting about the tons of content THEY have that you don't, even though everyone is paying the same subscription price. I find this to be very unfair, and the customer support people acknowledge that it is unfair, but they claim that this is what they need to do in order to make decisions on app content. Even though I like the app, it's not acceptable to be paying for content and not getting it.
Tell me more about this feature testing. Do you know how they select people to test the new features? What would it take for you to become a feature tester for them. Interested because I’m currently writing my review of Simply Piano and I’ll include your experience as part of my review :) Who knows maybe SP will watch the review and change their process
I just got flowkey a few days ago. So far I love it. I researched some of the other apps such as yousician , simply piano, as well as others. I decided on floki for a few reasons. The first of which is it is not cartoonish does not have colored notes. One of the deciding factors for me was the weight mode, it is fantastic if you are trying to figure out a hard section of the song it waits for you. When I was using simply piano if you fall behind it just keeps scrolling. So then you have to start from the very beginning. With flowkey you can section off a part of the song you're having trouble with and it will loop and keep playing the section until you get it. Right now I am working on chords and chord progressions. In short I find the app fantastic. As far as the price a lot of people complain ?? It's like $10 a month 120 for the year. When you take piano lessons from an instructor you pay $60 per lesson. They say there is no substitute for an instructor. But you have to find a good one. I took lessons for two and a half years not one of them taught me chords. I do better on my own, using different methods mastering piano course. And now flowkey. Different methods for different people. Good luck on your musical journey....😊😊😊
I couldn’t agree more that wait mode is one of the best features for flowkey. And the look and feel of the app is more adult. Thanks for your comment
I have 35 years of experience playing guitar but now want to learn piano - Would you say this app would be good for someone like me?
That you have 35 years of musical experience is a great platform to learn piano. I was like you in this. Yes this is the right app for you if you want to jump straight in and start playing songs. If you want a refresher on reading music and an app that introduces piano skills more gradually I’d go for Simply Piano instead. Or do simply piano for a year and then switch to flowkey. Let me know how you get on
@@pianocam Thanks for the reply and good advice, I think I will start with flowkey and see how it goes.
Great app, but I think Simply Piano is better for beginners. Flowkey and Yousician seem to be a little bit for intermediate players.
I haven’t tried Simply Piano but I’m thinking to give it a go and then post a review
@@pianocam I tried it and I found it fun. I can read the treble clef but I have trouble reading the bass clef. Simply piano made it somewhat easier.
Great review of Flowkey , thanks ! Just bought the app to learn and it's super fun as it is very interactive with the note "wait" function and the software gives encouraging and realistic feed-back : such as "not bad, but do it again ... (or) ... Fantastic, you completed the exercise" ! As to the "bad" news from the name borrowed from the famous "Clint Eastwood"western :- ) ... it is true that flowkey does not advertise this limitation but it's not so bad to have incomplete song scores I I guess because the songs serve as learning steps and because one could find the complete score elsewhere ... most certainly a copyright problem with the various artists that would deserve full royalties for their songs each time it is used. The Beatles may not make claims ... but alive musicians deserve pay for the work and own their intellectual property : artistic work is property for a lifetime apparently. ! What do you think ? Has it been frustrating not to have the complete song ? Maybe they could implement a premium plus version with complete songs ... that the customer has to pay an extra buck for !?
I don’t think the incomplete scores is a copyright thing, they are just trying to make some scores a bit easier to learn by making them shorter. If a pro version (on the app) of the song exists the full score is usually there. I don’t like the idea of a premium service. Customers should just pay once. Thanks for your comment :)
thanks ! Yeah, agree that the customer should only have to pay once ! It was just an hypothesis that the shorter song versions ( scores ) are due to copyright problems ... we would have to ask the software company and ask for full versions if possible ?! ; ) Best wishes, Mike
Yeah agree with that. Cheers Mike
Amazing , well done and so inspirational for adult learners... thanks !! I'd like to do the same challenge and being a drummer. How is your challenge in 2024 ? (happy new year) ! Mike PS. Curious, how did you burn in the written text please ( so nice ).
Thanks Mike. You should do it for the drums. Go for it! Let me know if you do. I’ll do an update on how my challenge is going soon. As for the text I use the screen record feature on an iPad while using any app that enables free hand writing. I use an apple pen for the writing. I then import that to premier pro and key out the back ground before overlaying onto whatever my video is about. Search for “adding hand written text to video” in TH-cam and you’ll see how to do it.
Hey ! Thanks so much for your reply and details on how you did the wonderful burnt in titles / text comments in the video . Excellent work! Thanks also for encouraging me to do the same challenge and publish it here too... we all have different experiences in ou musical journeys and that diversity makes it unique and worthwhile seeing fragile beginnings! Seing timid and courageous children play simple songs on the piano gave me the motivation to attempt the piano at sixty! Perhaps a misunderstanding that I expressed myself wrong - I'm not wanting to do a 1 year learning drums challenge, but come from drums to a the piano as complete beginner and found the "barrier" quite huge... so your type of video is invaluable to me. Coming from the guitar you have harmony and score advantage.of course : - ) I've chosen a simple piano in order not to be tempted to play around with sounds and effects... but your E-piano has great backging band tracks to play to in rhythm making it fun & dynamic to learn from what one can see! Cool... what model is it ? OK; I'll let you know when I've produced & published my first beginner video ... just a bit apprehensive about it right now with regards to privacy and all.. . ;- 0 Looking forward to seeing your progress video ! God bless !
No worries Mike. And like I said let me know if you do a drumming challenge and how it goes
I agree the 7 days isn't near long enough for a free trial. It's not like you are going to "learn piano" in a week and then won't need it.
I’m hearing ya. It’s hard to experience all the features in full in such a short time especially if you are juggling job kids etc
Great review! Thanks, well done.
Thanks. I haven’t reviewed other apps yet so will look to add more soon
Thanks for that. I got the "Simply Piano" app. Some of the features you describe in Flowkey make me want to switch. I am not even up to 50% in the song speed. So I need the slower speed. I will check out the 7 day trial to see if it works for me.
How did you get on with trying flowkey? I think simply piano is good for teaching you how to read and play notes. Flowkey gives a few more options around how you learn a piece
@@pianocamIt worked out great. I was able to start learning a piece and was able to memorize the first section after only 30 minutes. Their repetition feature allowed me to keep going till I got it right and then play by myself. I need to practice more.
Fab it worked out for you. So you are enjoying it more than Simply piano?
Nice job, I have viewed several reviews and you have seemed to hit the key points in about the right amount of time
Thanks. I’m glad people like yourself are finding this review. Encourages me to do more
:)

Ooh interesting!! I also think human empathy plays a big role in motivation - something that AI won’t be able to replicate!
Yes AI could struggle to motivate us like a human can
Great work! How have you been doing?
Hi Corinne, doing alright. I haven’t posted much lately but I’ve still been practicing. How are you?
It sounds great! Very smooth :)
Thanks. Getting there
Mate, very impressive! Are you using a piano tutoring app?
Not yet. I’m starting this weekend. Trying a different one every couple of weeks. Then comparing them on the channel
very nice upload.
Thanks!
Reading music is so hard to start with but it gives you access to much more music and being able to play without memorising,. I never memorise pieces now! You can do it!
Yeah it will be a slow journey but worth it
Love that Bach piece! I’m working on prelude in C minor atm and it’s so much fun to play 😊
C minor too many black keys in that for me 😅. I look forward to seeing how it sounds
Hi Cam, good luck on your journey. It will be great to look back in a year and see how far you've come!
Thanks Corinne. It’s great to have support from other players
