Barwon Heads Freediving Crayfish Australia

Example of surf entry and exit technique for Freediving. Identify the locations of rips at the beach by seeing where the waves are breaking less and use that calmer water to get in and out. Make sure you are confident that the rip won’t be too fast for you to swim back in through and be aware that rips change based on waves wind and tides.

Nice vids bro. Love your advice in the comments. I’d love to get some diving in this summer. Im based in Melbourne, Western Suburbs and would love to get out the Great Ocean Road or anywhere close by. What spots would you recommend?
Depends on your water experience. If you have a swimming surfing or other water sport background then can start out on the ocean side but if your starting fresh then best start in the bay. The spearfishing Victoria Facebook page is run by a friend of mine and it has a find a buddy group chat. If you haven’t already joined those they are a good place to start
The raw seems more realstic but the adjusted version is more pleasing to the eye.
How many years have you been diving for. Very interesting video I'd love to have the skills to also harvest fresh taste seafood. Do you have any advise for calming your nerves for a total beginner, being comfortable and confident, thanks.
I have been diving for 10 years. If it is scallops you are after a 3 day Freediving course will teach you enough to get you down to more than 10 m. After that it’s just a matter of finding people local to you who can help get you started with some spots to dive. Depending on where you live it can be pretty easy to get a feed of fish or abalone without going deeper than 3 m. If you are based in the lower north island of New Zealand or in Victoria in Australia I can point you towards some people to go out with.
Extremely diving
Very good mate👍
gnarly conditions
I had a little anchor attached to my float for while I’m diving near it
How does your board stay there without floating away ...
is it very common which is we have to dive more than 10m to get the crayfish along the great ocean road?
Typically there are more days per year where you can dive for crays in the deeper water than in the shallow water. As you go deeper the waves and swell push you around less and the visibility normally improves. As a bit of a rule of thumb in Victoria you should expect to dive about 10x as deep as the wave hight otherwise the waves will push you around and stir up the sand/visibility to much. So if you want to dive where it is 5 m deep aim to have less than 0.5m of swell. If you plan to dive 15m deep you will probably be ok in 1.5m of swell.
@@finnbismark Thank you very much to explain to me this much. especially tell me the tips. I play in Sydney. I only played about a year which i do not have lots of experience. I do not dive that much deep to get the caryfish. Generally I dive about 5m to catch them. It is like you mentioned, at this deep, I am washed by the swell and also it is hard to find them. It is very hard to let me stay there properly. I am not sure if it is worth to go deeper to find crayfish or not in Sydney. I watch the videos on youtube. Many youtubers who catch them in NSW. They do not go very deep.
The big cray weighed 3.18kg
Man the ocean is beautiful 😍
Stay safe mate! Glad you got the cray
nice mate
Is a skill to enter through surf bro
Damn did u get stuck at 1st?
Had a hold of a crayfish that was stuck that I didn’t want to let go of and when I gave up on getting him out It took longer than expected to wriggle my self out. About 5 minutes later I found out why the crayfish was so hard to get out, he didn’t fit through the gap I was trying to get him through. He was still there wedged unable to move so I helped free him then took him home.
@@finnbismark glad u got out safely 🙏
@@SoleAdventuresNZ my buddy met me about 3 meters off the bottom he was already on his way down to lend a hand. So I would’ve been ok even if I was more stuck.
Oh my word, I'm so glad you're OK, and I'm glad you have a mate to go diving with you!!! ❤❤❤all our love❤
What happened mate?
@@vandiemengoldprospecting7624trying to get cray out and took a bit longer than expected to get myself out of the hole so bailed on the belt to buy back some safety margin. Then went back down grabbed the belt and the dive after grabbed the cray
@@finnbismark Nice glad your ok 👍🏻👌🏻
Mean vids bro, just followed the channel ❤ have a peak at some of our missions from akl ❤
Cheers, I’ll have a look once I get home. Just got out of the way after a dive at the airport in Wellington
Nice💛💛💛💗
At what depth is this, Finn? And what is the water temperature?
The dives that day were mostly between 8-17m deep and the water temperature was 13 degrees
Making me hungry?? Noodle time😂😂😂
They’re both very cool. The adjusted one looks better but a bit less realistic.
Thanks for the feedback, It will probably take some practice to get the white balance correct.
In adjusted it’s definitely more clear but it does look adjusted/filtered. Raw looks more natural. I like both but for diff reasons
I like the adjusted. Makes the water clarity a bit better. Whales looked cool in adjusted.
Raw
Glad to have the feedback. It does improve visibility a bit to adjust it. But it kind of feels a little false like putting filters on sunsets. Main adjustment was to reduce the greens a bit to clear up some of the haze in the water. Do you think better or different correction would be good or do you like footage to be in tampered with regardless of what looks nicer.
@@finnbismark I like natural footage it always looks better but that’s just me in the adjusted one the colours don’t look right
Few nice fish there
Unbelievably cool
So cool!
Nice work. Are you heading out solo when doing this?
First part of the dive I had a buddy but I didn’t for the second part as he headed to shore before he. Water is cold (13 degrees) this time of year and not many other people own warm enough wetsuits for long dives in Melbourne winter. Do you dive around Melbourne?
@@finnbismark Yeah Mornington Peninsula too. Getting back into it after a year or more off.
@@finnbismark What thickness wetty do you use? 5mm?
@@TheJaifresh this time of year 7mm and 8.5mm
@@TheJaifreshdo you do any cray diving?
Good work . Nice dive
Beautiful.
Nice few cray there
It was all filmed today in one dive… one 7 hour long dive😂😂
@@finnbismark 7 hours!! I would freeze this time of year for that long 😂
What wetsuit do you run
@@vandiemengoldprospecting762413 degrees water temperature 7mm bottoms 8.5mm top. I don’t think I really have a time limit on when I would get cold. And when it gets even colder I’ll use 8.5 bottoms and 8.5 top.
@@vandiemengoldprospecting7624 7mm wettie commercial bottoms and 8.5mm polosub jacket
The way you snached that thang 😂
@@burtlux3736 got to be quick
How deep roughly?
Deepest dives in the video were about 20m. Most of the cray fish were 6-10m deep.
Did you see many crayfish and abalone cheers
Pleanty of black lip same as almost every in tassie, about 15 crays none of them were big, good fish numbers.
@@finnbismark Awesome thanks mate I do a bit around Wynyard way and get a few here and there but looked like there was way more crays there
@@vandiemengoldprospecting7624it was nothing remarkable compared to most places I’ve dived but definitely some there, but I have only dived there once.
@@finnbismark do you do much diving on the north west coast or not really?
@@vandiemengoldprospecting7624 that’s the only dive I’ve done on the north east coast of tassie. I have done a ~30 dives on the north east side and a few more on the east and south east. I don’t live in tassie but I have worked there for about 6 months.
Beautiful fish
How many meters Down is this?
That dive was about 12m deep
Amazing
cant see any whale
Gostei 👍

Looks like you’re having a ball Finn!
So beautiful!
The water temperature was 12 degrees where I was diving today.
What is the water temperature in Tasmania at this time of the year, Finn?
12 degrees was what my dive watch said
Such lovely colours on the rocks.
Do you have footpoket from cressi and blades from another company?
I use the mares foot pockets and DiveR blades.
looks like good terrain way better then where i live, anyways could you please upload longer videos if you can mate.
So far I’ve mostly been uploading single dives so gets a bit hard to go over 2 minutes free diving 😂😂😂 I’ll get around to editing something at some point soon. Any particular type video you’re interested in?
Are you crazy to swim in the water of great white
