mecha are not meant the represent actual warfare they are a visual allegory for warfare. nobody thinks gundams are realistic, what matters is that they are TREATED as if they are just another part of life in their own series, hence the real robot genre
a reason why mechs have limbs in space is for extra mobility through the use of AMBAC which is when the limbs are swung in certain directions creating force to push the frame and adjust its trajectory without using propellant which makes it an efficient means of movement, its not just for striking poses, also if you want a good example of a properly adapted mecha concept I highly recommend Titanfall as a reference because then you will realize that tanks with ostrich legs simply aren't enough in a futuristic battle on any terrain, especially after war
"The design process is never explained in detail" Factually incorrect, there are countless early artworks from the original incarnation of "Freedom Fighter Gunboy" and how the design evolved into the titular Gundam The colors of the Gundam are so because it makes it look like a toy, they are bright and eye-catching, not because of the USAF logo the EVA one is definitely a stretch, the Evangelions and the show itself have more inspiration from Tokusatsu shows and particularly Ultraman than anything else Also sharp angular designs in mecha were around since before 1995 with Evangelion, I get that was the BIG one for the west and most people who don't do their research will attribute anything Mecha related past '95 to Eva, but that's just wrong
The thinner the mech the less plastic you have to use when producing a possible model kit figure that is my personal theory😊 Honestly i love big mecha figures. Other than that a great video keep up the great work👍 And greetings from the Netherlands🇳🇱
I like to think that real robots are big, slow, heavy, armored and have larger proportions while super robots are have more human proportions or what ever the artist wants
It's actually not. I only use a limiter to evenly raise the volume to what I consider normal. This is just what it sounds like when i record crouching in my closet. Also my voice gets progressively more fucked up as I usually try to record everything in one go.
prob one of the most diverging mecha design to come out are the kyokai senki ones. Instead of direct military inspiration they are more influenced by modern industrial/ "consumer?" robotics like Boston Dynamics etc even being completely driven by electric actuator and motors
That's an angle I haven't seen discussed much, some good thoughts here. The only point I'd add is that a lot of the designs also come down to utilitarianism of what was possible to animate at the time; you see a lot more complex and angular designs, evocative of the 90s and 2000s in manga and novels from before, and I suspect the change from round to angular at least on the limbs in no small part also came from the fact that it was now feasible (or perhaps mostly just desirable to look better than the last show) at all to actually animate those shapes without spending massive amounts of cash and manpower; another definitive inspiration are the costumes from live action Tokusatsu media, but I do not know the history of the genre well enough to make any claims on how it corellates with the evolution of the shapes
eva pioneered nothing, it's just the first mecha fanfic to be founded by an animation studio, it even has the self insert part. the genre was more than mature way back when Hideaki anno was still running from school to see Space Runaway Ideon. Mamoru nagano was the man who created the whole idea of mechs having skeletons, an Inner frame back in 1983, when every other mech was a bunch of springs and lines on the inside, the evas are a mix between Mamoru Nagano designs mixed with the organic designs of the mechs in Aura Battler Dunbine, even the eva looks like a modernized Dunbine, esharing the overall shape of the head and color scheme. but each designer has its inspirations and style, Shigeto koyama was the guy who designed the mechs in Diebuster, Captain Earth, Star driver, heroman, Darling in the franxx and even designed baymax, his designs follow the same style, and that applies to the rest of designers, it really just depends on who's the designer and what they've been asked to design
I thought: "hmmm, that accent sounds very german..." And the Die Sending mit der Maus theme was playing, so I do not even have to ask anymore. Anyway Gundam Aerial has thick thighs that save lives.
Oh no! All my insecurities about my accent and voice have returned! The song was supposed to confuse people who expect to hear Misato's theme when NGE is on screen.
big feet and legs, designers trying to appease the "realistic" hard ballers ranting about the square cubed law small feet and thin legs, artists and designers getting fed up an and going their own way.
A lot of modern mech design I would say is taking more design cues from Boston Dynamics. That how we are starting to see the trends for thinner legs or absence of feet.
It's real. HOLY SH-
Goodness, you had me at the 2142 walkers lol that's a niche old one now isn't it.

been telling the distinction of plane types and tank types to gundam twitter for years now and it always results in flame wars
Tell me when the next one starts.

Bass boosted voice... I can't listen to this.

IMHO one design inspiration for the Evangelion mechs was H.R. Giger's Xenomorphs, which is why the Evas aren't just spindly but downright creepy.
IM TEAM ARMORED CORE QUAD LEGS

Big feet and legs: designers like them large.
idm large feet or legs, but the old super robot shows feets just look like buns and the legs are just cylinders lol
Pretty sure Eva's design inspiration came from Ultraman more so than military vehicles.
Also, Giant Warriors from Nausicaa
And are definitely a continuation of the type of mechs from Dangaioh and Iczer 1
Gundam is the best 👌
The thin legs is a return to crab, Eighty Six is proof.
I liked the 86 mechs for how non-standard they were, especially the slower Federacy type.
Veritech from Robotech (Or valkrie from Macross) are the best mecha in my opinion it's literally a plane with legs and a gun.
Virgin thin legs fan Vs Chad Thicc Wide Dom legs enjoyer
The hover boy
@@yazan727 i forgor bout The-O
@@zucktheskeleton9731 sazabi too
Also the Virtue and Seravee, much thicker than the Dom.
@@spartantraveler7251 hell yeah I forgor they existed

Oh yeah, that's also certainly in there a lot.
