    Believe it or not, I kinda wish more modern RPGs could take a page out of the NES Final Fantasy games and just be like "Go explore this big vast world and defeat this vague evil with minimal instruction."...at least, that's how I remember Final Fantasy 1 & 3 being on my first playthrough. Although I did buy FF2 when the pixel remaster versions came out, I never finished it or even got that far.

    FF4 is my second favourite Final Fantasy the story hit different when i was 11/12 years old (fuck yeah, going to the moon!) It was a good enough story for the time lol. Fair criticisms of it though.

  • @mage1over137
    @mage1over137 หลายเดือนก่อน

    So like FF2, the story is basically Star Wars, and Golbez is Darth Vader, which also means there has to be the plot twist in the end, and Golbez had to be redeemed. The same thing happened in FF2, when it's revealed that the dark knight is Leon, Maria's brother. So the cheesy plot twist was very much an intentional reference to Darth Vader.

    Mp wasn't a thing in the original Final Fantasy, that was added for the GBA and PSP versions.

    I think the reason people don't like FF2 is because they don't play it like it's designed to be played. You don't need to level up your HP very much, and actually it's a good idea not too (There are late game enemies that will deal more damage if you have a high max HP), what you want to do is level up shields and evasion. You don't need HP if they can't hit you. Further using Teleport makes most enemy encounters trivial. The story is basically Star Wars, which is good. Other than the trap rooms there isn't really a lot wrong with the game. Also, I think his issues with the key term system are kind of silly. There are only 15 terms, only a handful of NPC's interact with the key terms, and you don't need to ever ask about every key term (Wild Rose is only used in the first 15 minutes of the game for example). But also why wouldn't you ask about a new key term right after you learned it? That's what you do in RPGs.

    I played the original Final Fantasy on the NES back in the day and the Final Fantasy Origins version on PS1 and absolutely love it. I have to point out, before I go further, that comparing a game that came out in 1987 to modern games just doesn't work. The reason for that should be obvious. The Origins version also has normal and easy modes. In normal mode, you play with the game settings from the NES way back when. In easy mode, there are numerous modifications to the settings that cut down on all the grinding and make the mages/wizards more playable characters, among other benefits. There are 6 player classes to chose from, each with its own set of abilities and attributes, a high degree of customization for its time. My personal favorite party was fighter and red, white, and black mage. My buddy who also played FF back then preferred fighter, black belt, and white and black mages. Then, came the class upgrades from a side quest, which granted more abilities. "Items" could be used to further customize the party by giving characters abilities they wouldn't otherwise have, including, but not limited to, a white mage wielding lightning magic, and a black mage wielding healing magic. While some of the things you mentioned as being annoying certainly could be just that, such idiosyncrasies didn't affect the gameplay for me.👍

    Final Fantasy X and 12 are long games. The grinding spots in both of those games sort of sneak up on you.

  • @HappyRatKaiser
    @HappyRatKaiser 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I wonder if you might find FF2 less tedious if you cut out all the grinding? I noticed your characters all have 900+ HP a half hour into the game, and that's just truly unnecessary; my last time playing through the game (the Famicom version, even, which is by far the slowest in providing stat growth) I ended the game with my highest HP character having 1237. The fact is, FF2 really requires no grinding whatsoever; you'll get HP as you progress through the game at a slow but steady pace because you'll take damage naturally during combat, and you really don't need to take much to trigger a potential HP boost, you only need to lose 1/8th of your max HP, which is like... getting hit once, most of the time. MP is much the same, as you'll more easily hit the 1/8th threshold as you level them up, since they'll cost more -- and since ethers are purchasable, you really don't need that much anyway. My characters had between 80 to 200 at end game, which happened without ever attempting to grind it. Lastly, while weapon skills and spells *can* go all the way to level 16, level 8 is perfectly fine at endgame for weapons, and frankly overkill for many spells. It's like how in most JRPGs you can beat the game at level 50-60, even though you can go to 99, but you don't have to. Give everyone shields and light armor because Evade% is better than damage reduction; teach everyone a handful of different, useful spells; don't give in to a compulsive desire to grind because the game award's EXP on a curve where you gain much more when your stats are comparatively low for the enemies you're fighting, and much less when you're stronger, so grinding is very inefficient; and use buffs and debuffs to even the odds in tough encounters. If you do all that, FF2 is basically a zero grind game, especially since the insane encounter rate will give you more combats than you could ever want anyway!

      FF2 is a pretty cool game. The degree of customization it allows is just insane, especially for when it came out. It also used a different system than the first FF for beefing up. The only thing I don't like is that obtaining high attribute and skill levels takes so long👍

    You make fun of FF4 today, but back in 1994 it absolutely blew us away. Nothing like that had ever been done in a video game before. My friend and I were 14 at the time when we played it and it had a major impact on our lives at the time. The plot points you mock still get me emotional to this day

    • @saulbeano

      I can totally see that. It really does seem like a game that was pushing the boundaries at the time of it's release. I just think that a lot of these points that I brought up didn't quite age as well and playing it for the first time nowadays makes me groan at some parts. If I had played this for the first time as a kid, the impact might have hit me harder, but I'm an adult lol. The game has issues but I do still like it a lot overall, as I'll probably end up replaying it a few times in the future!

      Agree, FF4, brother. Cecil fighting to do good and redeem his dark past hits home. The duality / comparison of Kain and Golbez giving in to their dark sides and not able to resist it to find their own redemption like Cecil is a great undertone. Even The After Years, it was kinda killed by the chapter / monetization model, but looking at how Golbez and Kain have to finally face their past, while we see how menacing Cecil could be if he had given in to the darkness before, really hit home.

    This video popped up earlier, so I started it before switching over to the NES Final Fantasy video. Much like the one I left there, this will be a relatively lengthy comment... Just like the NES had one Final Fantasy game, the SNES had only two: FFII and FFIII (well, and Mystic Quest). Or so we thought at the time. When the PS1 collections came out, I bought those and finally played some of the games we missed during the Nintendo era. Of course, by now, I've had those, DS, GBA, PC, and even mobile versions of FFI-VI. In a way, it's good that we didn't get the original FFII, FFIII, and FFV. We got Final Fantasy in 1990, then a little over a year later, FFII(IV) was released, making the original seem like an overly difficult child's game. By October 1994, when FFVI saw its release, the SNES was known as the best console for RPGs of any sort. Final Fantasy itself had seen marked improvement over its three entries to the market. Final Fantasy IV has a fairly dark and complex story for its time. Starting off as somewhat of a "Bad Guy" yourself, you watch as Cecil tries to redeem himself. From the bombing of the town of Mist and the early losses of NPCs like Rydia's mother and Anna, to the treatment Cecil gets after washing ashore near the town of Mysidia, you wonder exactly how this Dark Knight will prevail over whatever forces have corrupted the Kingdom of Baron. Blah, blah, blah, I won't reiterate the entire story, but by the time you finish Mount Ordeals, you have a definite idea of what is going on, as well as newfound powers and potential as a Paladin. Those of us who were still playing FFI at the time saw the obvious parallels. Crystals, job classes, elemental fiends, a plot twist (of sorts) near the end... it was obviously Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy VI marked a new chapter. The crystals were gone and the job classes less stringent than earlier entries, with espers and accessories essentially making every character a jack-of-all trades with some unique skills and strengths. Fourteen interchangeable characters, most of whom have comprehensive backstories. In many ways, it was the pinnacle of classic Final Fantasy, before cinematics and 3D graphics took over. It could be argued that without Final Fantasy, we wouldn't have gotten other great Squaresoft games like Chrono Trigger or Super Mario RPG. Without the first NES game, we might have been stuck in a Dragon Quest inspired RPG cycle of single protagonists and basic stories. I think that FFIV inspired bigger and bolder moves from other developers, and FFVI showed how epic of a quest could be undertaken on the SNES. I'm looking forward to your next chapter in this series. We got as many games on the PlayStation as we did on the NES and SNES combined... and more (with the compilations, Tactics, and other FF-related games). FFVII marked the beginning of the end for me, but I still put quite a lot of time into it. FFVIII was okay, but I missed the days of simply grinding to beat difficult bosses. I gave up after the Adel boss fight, not being powerful enough to defeat her (or just sucking at strategy) and being unable to level up in Lunatic Pandora. FFIX was a great game, but another one which I never quite completed. One major thing about the PS games was the need for memory cards. I have more than a few floating around somewhere. Who knows how many still work. Remember the aftermarket mega-capacity cards that often failed? If I can find it, I'm pretty certain my old FFVI cartridge still has my saves from 1995 on it. I can't say the same if I find all of the discs for the PS games. I'd have to hope the discs aren't too scratched up and find the specific memory card I saved on back in 1997-2000 or so.

    Great retrospective, you've gotten a 36th subscriber. Hopefully, in a few years I'll check out your latest video along with 10k+ others (or more). For those in my age group (mid-40s), the NES era represents one game: Final Fantasy. In the coming years we'd get FFII and FFIII on the SNES. Looking back, it's hard to believe, but those three games represent the entirety of my prime RPG playing days, at least when it comes to Final Fantasy. All of the other SNES RPGs helped fill out the experience, but by the time FFVII came out I was moving into adulthood and had other priorities. Of course, I've played various remakes of the original FFII and FFIII by now. I just started the Pixel Remake (PM) of the second game again last week and find the leveling system weird. The Pixel Remake of III is next (I'm at the end of I and IV, and almost halfway through VI). Back to the one NES Final Fantasy game we knew way back when... Dragon Quest wasn't well known in my circles. Everyone loved The Legend of Zelda, but I was never the best at action RPGs (though I did do okay with Crystalis using a Game Genie 😀). I recall playing Hydlide early on and reading about various D&D and Ultima games on different systems but never played them. Final Fantasy was something new to us: an immersive game where we became the heroes. We chose our party composition, game them names, and embarked on a quest that was epic for the time. It's hard to believe it's been nearly 35 years since I was sitting in middle school talking about the new game Nintendo Power featured in its pages. This was before I made my own money, and new games were very much relegated to birthdays and Christmas, so it was good that the Golden Age of rental stores was in place. I rented FFI a few times, always hoping to get a cartridge with a good save. You see, it was an amazing game, but it was just plain difficult. Garland was a pushover, the pirates' numbers threw me for a loop (remember, the original didn't automatically retarget, so if you focused all of your attacks on one enemy who was defeated with the first one, you wasted the subsequent three attacks), and by the time I defeated the Vampire, I thought I was near the end of the game. I was ill-prepared to take on the Four Fiends and eventually Chaos. Truth be told, even the PM version of Chaos beat me once already despite me using Boost to ensure I'm at high levels and well-equipped. Anyway, I'm watching the SNES retrospective next and will likely leave another longish comment. 🫡
