10 self sabotage traps freelance language teachers fall into – and how to escape them
I'm not a big fan of the term self-sabotage-it feels a bit heavy and suggests there's something wrong with you. But the reality is, we all have behaviors that can hold us back, especially in our businesses.
These behaviors usually stem from an instinct to protect ourselves from a perceived threat, but that 'protection' often ends up working against us.
Recognizing these tendencies can be a game changer. When you're aware of them, you can consciously choose to respond differently.
In this video, I’m sharing the top 10 most common self-sabotaging behaviors I see in online business owners. If any of these resonate with you, let me know how you navigate them-I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Hi, I’m Rachael. Like many people in our profession, I didn’t exactly grow up dreaming of working in ELT, but what made me fall in love with it was two main things:
❤ The opportunity to work directly with people and help them to help themselves change their lives for the better.
❤ The great colleagues I got to work with, as a teacher, teacher trainer, manager and materials writer.
Working as a business and mindset coach with ELT freelance professionals enables me to combine both those things, and to use the skills and experience I have to have a real impact.
One of the things I don’t like about ELT is the way that so many excellent professionals are underpaid, undervalued and scraping by. I also far too often see people working themselves into the ground. This might be OK when we’re in our early twenties with no responsibilities, but it’s no way to run a sustainable and enjoyable professional career.
I want to really challenge the low expectations, and culture of ‘having to’ accept poor conditions and teach ELT freelancers the steps they can take to make their businesses truly work for them.

So where SHOULD we teach ? I have been teaching on Cambly and looking for better pay now.
Hello, Rachel. Good day. Thank you for this video. I was about registering for preply when I came across this video. I still plan on registering though, but at least I will consider other options while doing so
They need commission. Let them take it. Why we rack our brain over it. Their is a company .They have to run their company, pay salaries and so and so. We need to look finally do we get any decent income. Marketing is such a tiring a process. I have my own online institute, but what to say, getting student is very, very difficult .One man cannot manage. Will I teach or do marketing? My institute have maintained a good standard so far and results. But gettting students,so difficult.
Thank you so much for this . I am a multifaceted person quite interest in alot of things. I am into content , entrepreneurship and also freelancing. Months ago i found myself with over 10 thingss I do but my bank account was still not looking good that when i told myself no i need to cut some things down. I currently only describe myself according to what i mentioned and i have been trying so hard to manage my time. This video has motivated me to start working smarter and not hader and be more efficient with time also making time for myself and personal needs, time and space. Thanks alot!!!!
Good to hear you’ve found this helpful. When you are multi passionate it can be hard to narrow down, but it’s also important to make your business profitable:)
So true
Thank you, Rachel! Amazingly relevant and useful to me! My frog is admin such as invoicing and and its a good idea to get it done first! And the other thing is a course Im trying to plan and perfect but you're totallly right that trial and error and gathering useful feedback would be very beneficial. Also regarding the prices I have said this is my price but....😅😅 Thank you and have a very happy Christmas!🎉❤🎉❤!🎉
You’re definitely not alone as I see (and even do) these things ALL the time… Wishing you a wonderful Christmas too x
wow.. quite a competition
Someone recently told me it’s a lot higher now..
@@earnlearnthrive yes i do agree.
I actually really like Preply...I've tried other platforms but Preply "stays out of my business" the most. I felt highly controlled by other platforms. When I signed up they did recommend I charge between $9-12 dollars an hour. That would have made it extremely unfeasible. I set my rate at $25 and had a student within a month, and I've been tutoring on there ever since. Granted, I had 4 years of experience teaching online. One downside of Preply is that the whiteboard is glitchy and the lessons can be a little boring or have questions that students aren't interested in answering. Another factor for American teachers: I've noticed a lot of British spelling and expressions so that is one thing to consider. I'm never sure whether to point out to the student that it's a British way of speaking; sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.
I'm always glad to hear when it works for someone, because my underlying goal is for the industry as a whole to start seeing the value in what we offer and charge accordingly. Getting clients for my coaching business comes second, obviously, but I fully recognise that only a small proportion of people who watch this video will decide to start finding their own clients off the platforms, and even fewer will decide to work with me directly (and that's fine). I'm not actually a massive fan of any platforms (Preply just stood out for me because of their policies), because I think it's much harder to stand out and charge more premium rates (say $40+) when the basic premise is a place to find cheap lessons. But, if you can manage to stand out and attract the right kind of students, it's true that it can remove the need to spend time and effort on marketing, so that's very much an individual decision.
@@earnlearnthrive I actually agree with you! 😃😃💖💖At a different point in my life I would absolutely branch out and leave companies like Preply to start my own tutoring business. But I've considered it and right now, the fact that Preply handles the money, software, finding students, techy stuff, etc. is a huge bonus for me. I don't currently have the bandwidth myself. In the future I likely will. I'd say Preply is good in the interim when you don't have the energy/drive/know-how yet to start your own thing.
@@PuppyEnglish2024 That's absoluitely fair enough. Eyes wide open 👀👀
I don´t agree at all. This is a great plattform, well planned, good support, I teach adults all over the world to a good price. Of course they take a provision, each plattform does that. Since I do this I earn more than I did before and I travel the world. I wonder, why you did this video? It is a free choice for everyone and nobody is forced to teach on Preply.
People’s perspective on what is a good price varies depending on their financial situation. If it works for you I’m happy for you. It does for some. But I have also talked to dozens of well qualified and experienced teachers who have found themselves in a situation where they are working a lot of hours at a low rate and then can’t get out of that situation because they’re working too hard keeping their heads above water to try and market themselves elsewhere. I want to show people that there are alternatives, that’s all. Some people will choose to work with me as a result, most won’t, but either way they understand they have choices.
I teach for food.
It's always inspiring to see ESL teachers thriving. Congratulations, and good wishes for your future.
This is very interesting. Ive been teaching on preply for a few months now and it has honestly been a bunch of goods and bads. I do really agree that the whole trial lesson 100% commission thing is a scam because most of my trial lessons i get are 50 minute lessons and i dont get paid anything. So its really stupid. However, I will say that i have learned so much through teaching on this platform and have actually met some really nice students that i actually enjoy teaching. Its also a good way to just make a little money on the side. I probably teach about 2 hours a week only and ive made a few hundred dollars so far. (So mixed emotions)
Fair enough if you want to get some experience and make a little money on the side. But obviously that’s not a business that’s going to actually pay your bills.
Hello, how do I join you ma'am?
Thank you ma'am for this honest feedback about Preply I was about to apply without knowing the agreements and process after it This was a life saver to me❤
❤❤❤ a nice library behind you ❤❤❤, thank you , you clarified eveything for me about preply.
Preply is a circus 😂 so many “teacher” with strong Arabic or African accent are claiming they are English Native Speakers😂 I saw several Muslim women covering them full body with only eyes revealed and they also claim themselves as English Native Speakers😂
Surely how someone dresses doesn’t reflect whether they’re a native speaker or not? Not that I think you have to be a native speaker to be a good teacher.
@ problem is I have never seen any such native speakers in UK nor in US. Besides, these women have very strong Arabic accent.
Islam is the second biggest religion in the U.K. and plenty of Muslim women wear veils etc. Can’t comment on the accents though.
@ that really says something about UK today.
I am so shocked! The trial lesson should be both ways! The trial lesson aims to assess and see how u feel about the product you are going to purchase. Shame on you preply
No, I am not working but aiming to work for them soon. I am thinking of getting their certificate
I started at Preply as a Polish teacher because really ....where do I advertise myself privately? I have my profile on linked in...well that ain't working
Really good points here Rachel! It is frustrating that as an expert who provides life-changing outcomes that students expect to pay peanuts! I remember very well an Italian mother who asked me to teach her daughter the necessary academic English to pass the IELTS exam, and wanted to pay me £7 per hour! Well, I was new to the industry, which was several years ago, so I agreed! To be fair it helped to build my confidence, but the young woman went on to secure a place at a leading British university and go on to have a glittering career! Just to add that the Mother of the young woman pleaded hardship as her husband was out of work, she said! Yet, I discovered, down the line, they owned several properties which they rented out! I was surely taken advantage of!
We’ve pretty much all been there I think.. as educators we naturally are empathic and want to help, and there is nothing wrong with that.. as long as we are also showing self compassion and not sacrificing ourselves along the way. Because ultimately that destroys the golden goose (our passion for and ability to help) .
I really enjoy all your videos. Can you help me on one point? I’m an American and have been teaching many years. I don’t understand the UK way of deciding levels such as C1, etc. I only know beginner, lower intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, advanced. Thanks for any clarification you can give. Kind Regards, Mike
Hi there! This is the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). It does align with the older beginner, intermediate etc, but not necessarily level by level. Here's a link to a site where the descriptors for each level are described in detail. www.coe.int/en/web/common-european-framework-reference-languages/level-descriptions
They're called CEFR levels, you can find lots of information about them online.
@@jauntydamemusic Thank you! I actually had replied to this, but must have not saved it or something.
Hmm, today there are 27.729!!!!! It’s overloaded with many tutors who are not even qualified!
Oh goodness! The major problem is that a lot of people go to Preply looking for a cheap tutor, not necessarily a qualified one. Which means it's that much more unlikely to work well for you if you are looking for clients who do understand the value you offer and are willing to pay for it.
Is it worth learning a language from a students perspective?
Depends on the teacher you choose!
What about now
Very interesting. I am a kindergarten teacher from st lucia 🇱🇨 and I applied to work on preply just to make a little extra income. Listening to your video has been an eye opener. I would really like someone to help me find a better company that I could apply to, so that I could accomplish my dreams
It’s better to create a video lesson and upload it to your TH-cam channel rather than teaching on Preply.
I have question... does preply platform have possibility to scrutiny conversation between a native and a student? Because from my point of view fees are too high.
My opinion is how the hell would you know if native English-speaking teachers are not the best???
Because I have a Masters degree in English Language Teaching and therefore know that whether you are a native speaker or not isn’t a key factor in what makes an effective foreign language teacher. Some native speakers are excellent teachers of course but not because they were born in an English speaking country.
It's called a free market for a reason.. if you price yourself out of it, you lose business.. maybe you should study American economics
Native speakers are usually trained to teach other native speakers. They also get frustrated when foreign speakers make mistakes. If English is their only language, they can't fix the students' mistakes because they don't understand why they happen. The ones that have adequate training as FL and SL teachers are usually very good, unless they come from a schooling tradition that favours "natural learning", in which case they can't explain concepts of the language to foreign speakers. Many native speakers can only teach conversations and they can't support a student who wants to study for a degree or to achieve a high level of communication in domains other than daily conversation, travelling and family relations.
@@ChristinaP-p3sI’m not sure it’s true about the training. I was a CELTA tutor for over a decade and the vast majority of native speakers who took the course had no teaching experience prior to doing it. The non native speaker teachers usually did, so often did better than the native speakers, though not always, as sometimes they were too set in their ways and not open to feedback. There are very many excellent and well qualified native speaker teachers, but it definitely is true that a lot rely heavily on being a native speaker, which has no direct correlation with being a good teacher IME.
Very useful information! Thanks
Thank you for giving saving me.
Basically you're deceiving people so they sign up with you, nice going.
LOL.. I can assure you it doesn’t work that way.
I work on preply and its going great! Full schedule and I do what I want when I want within their guidelines 😁
Happy to hear that. It can work for some people if their situation fits (i.e. you don't need to charge much because you live in a 'cheap' country).
@@earnlearnthrive I am from San Francisco California, one of the most expensive places for rent in the USA, if not world. I live comfortable and travel a lot 😃I charge over 40 an hour and my schedule stays full. I admit, it is not the normal. I also do not teach English on preply, that field is extremely saturated. I would advise people to think about what else they can teach that has little competition AND high demand
@@DonTravelsTheWorld Ah, well that would be another exception because, as you say, there is a lot less commoditisation when it’s harder to find tutors.
Hi @don please how can one teach other things in preply, apart from English
Great tips, thanks for this video! I especially like how this can help filter the nightmare clients and attract the dream clients ;)
Yes, exactly :)
I have applied to Preply what other platforms do you suggest
Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. I actually teach people how to find clients themselves, so this isn't something I can really advise on (I just hear the horror stories mainly). But here’s a link to a recent post on LinkedIn where I explained when platforms can be a good idea and in the comments there are some recommendations for platforms that take a lower commission etc www.linkedin.com/posts/rachaelroberts-eltbusinesscoach_what-do-you-have-against-preply-activity-7137749975676915712-erCs?
Thanks for an honest review. Very well done. I will look for another platform.
So what’s the solution? What are the alternatives?

Hi Rachel 😊Would you recommend Pal Fish ❓
I don’t really recommend any platforms because I teach people how to find their own clients. I just had a Google though and found this information, which may help. www.tefl.org/teach-english-online/palfish/
Hey! I'm a nineteen year-old girl whose English is pretty good 😔 But I am going to get a TESOL degree, so I assume I will also be competing against people like me now in about five years. So, no offence taken! Your content is a gem. I love that you have a short format and use clear, well-crafted examples to allow us to value our talents and, most importantly, our real needs. I'm so glad that I found an earnest person discussing these sorts of topics. Thank you!
Agreed. I've set my rate at 25 dollars an hour and I'm not lowering it. I'll just keep searching for opportunities.
I work on Preply from Tajikista. May God bless Preply. It helps me a lot to receive additional income.
I wish I had watched this earlier. I have 6 years of experience teaching English as a Second Language. My profile was just approved. If they encourage students to prefer native-speaker teachers, it only means I'm wasting my time.
😊
can you suggest another platform where i can earn more than preplay?

I m teaching Turkish online since 2015 I tried to use different ways and platforms but the best is preply about everything withdrawal policy and payment price everything just one minus is free trial which is really annoying but when you try other platforms like italki or monthly paying one u understand the value of preply lol😂
I feel it is important to give a different perspective on this as someone who has both freelanced and is currently teaching on Preply (for 1.5 years now). Yes, it's hard to get established, as is ANY business. I started advertising my classes at $8 per hour as a NES and gradually increased my rates by $1-$2 per month and I am currently charging $25-$30 per hour. I am a very pro-active and professional teacher and treat this as a business, which is where "most" tutors on Preply fail. I have also been a traditional, full timer teacher for 20+ years. Preply do all the marketing and take care of all the financial side, which trust me, as an ex-business owner is no small matter. You don't have to worry about any credit card fraud, unpaid classes or chargebacks etc. I feel to many tutors blame Preply for THEIR own mis-management and shortcomings. I currently teach 40-50 hours a week on there, earning $100-$200 per day. Is it perfect? No, but it is, in my opinion the best option out there.
Also regarding the commission, is it initially high? Yes, but I feel its worth putting in the effort. As for the base rate of 18%, is that really so high? Considering everything you get in return? If you a have an affiliate business you only get 10-20% of any product you sell, if your an ebay seller you pay 10-15% in fees, plus your cost of sales, VAT etc, so lets put this into perspective. I feel 18% is a good deal. IF your a PROFESSIONAL teacher, and an experienced teacher this is a great platform. But if you're a casual, unexperienced teacher, just looking to make some extra "pocket money", then may be this isn't for you.
Everyone has to decide what works for them, and if you’re happy with working 40-50 contact hours a week, that’s your choice. Personally, I think that’s crazily high, and I can’t imagine how exhausting it would be if you’re also doing preparation on top.
@@earnlearnthrive I do it because I'm passionate about my job. I also have a full time teaching job on top of Preply. That's my choice. I don't understand your "negativity" I feel you have an axe to grind. As I said. I 'm earning $100-$200 a day on there doing 6-8 hours, Do you know many full time jobs that you can earn the equivalent? You could earn more freelance, yes BUT then you have to do all the marketing, advertising, deal with platform issues, build lesson plans and the there's the chasing payments, dealing with CC fraud and chargebacks etc. I had a private student who, after 6 months of teacher his teenage daughter, filed a fraudulent CC complaint and got refunded ALL his money, no questions asked and you have no way to fight it. With preply all those concerns and worries are theirs, not your. That alone is worth the 18%.
@@ActionFigureResource Yes, I guess I do kind of have an axe to grind, because I see so many people really struggling to make it pay anything like what they should be earning as a qualifed and experienced teacher, and I don't like the way Preply encourages people to lower their rates etc (no need to go through this again). In answer to your question, in the UK the average salary is £34,963, which works out as a day rate of £203.00 (taking into account benefits etc), so $100-200 dollars for 6-8 contact hours doesn't sound that amazing, given that teaching is much more intensive than most jobs on an hourly basis (the average contact time in any good school is around 20-24 hours over 5 days), and that you may well be doing preparation on top. However, I also recognise that people's circumstances are different, and what is a poor hourly rate in some countries is pretty good in others, and that it can be a trade-off in terms of spending time marketing etc. Personally, I would choose to invest that time, and be able to charge higher rates and do less marketing over time as the business builds, but it's absolutely a choice.
What is a NES?
Thank you for being reliable and trustworthy! I find the videos very useful
Thanks, Fari, that's always great to hear :)
Hear me out I think their system actually incentivizes setting prices at a high rate. According to what you said the student has to pay 100% of whatever rate you set. So if you set a very high rate let's say $20, that will discourage students just looking for a freebie. The freebie seekers will just go with people pricing their classes much lower, right? People who are genuinely interested in your profile and background might be willing to pay the premium. I think I'll follow through with it but I'm setting my rate high and if I don't get any work that's fine. I don't want an endless stream of free trial lessons.
$20 an hour isn't a high rate where I'm based in the Uk, it's not much more than minimum wage (and that doesn't take into account preparation time). But, yes, while you are encouraged by Preply to set your rates low, you can actually set them at whatever point you like, and that can help to distinguish you from the mass. However, price alone isn't enough to signal quality and results- you'll need to show them why you're worth paying more for, and bear in mind that most students on Preply are not looking to pay more for high quality in the first place.
@@earnlearnthriveThanks for your reply. You make a good point. I have a doctorate in an unrelated field, a CELTA, and 7 years of teaching experience. What rate would you suggest I set to avoid wasting time? Here in Southeast Asia, $20 per hour is decent, but I want to discourage frivolous trial lessons? Do you think $20 would do the trick?
@@Roadkicks-mp8cb I honestly can't advise on rates, as it depends on so many factors, plus I'm not recommending using the platforms in the first place.
Ive been tutoring last 17 years. I can tell you things are not so simple. It depends on your circumstances and goals on each moment in your life. Some years I rely more on Preply and some others I promote more the lessons with my own direct clients. Depending how hungry for money I am.
Excellent video
Currently over 25000 English language tutors according to their site. All part of their greed-centered business model: open the platform to unlimited numbers of these "best language tutors" which brings down prices to as low as possible, which in turn attracts large numbers of customers ("students"). This oversupply enables customers to pick and choose from the salespeople, even allowing for extra goodies like getting returns on trials not to their particular taste. This leaves the salespeople working for scraps or for nothing. All so these scumbags "three Ukrainian founders, Kirill Bigai, Serge Lukyanov, and Dmytro Voloshyn" can get as rich as possible, while evading any form of labour legislation, minimum wages etc. On top of it all, just to rub their face in it, the salespeople also have to supply all the equipment and resources required to sell Preply's garbage product. Preply doesn't contribute one penny to the cost of their office space, furniture, computers , electricity, internet data etc. Preply's real work is things like placating and pacifying the salespeople to continue to accept being exploited and uphold their public image when any truth about them surfaces on places like glassdoor etc. Greed in its purest form.
