KEEP SCARBOROUGH TIDY
We have had some really bad publicity recently regarding the town being `filthy`. There are a few problems with litter but nothing that warrants the town being banded `filthy`. Every day, long before most people are awake, the streets are cleaned. Scarborough was very busy August bank holiday and yet there was hardly any litter. Yes - there were a couple of hot spots but these were cause by people not using the bins correctly. Amazing that some people are so lazy that they will try and force more rubbish into a bin that is already full and yet, less that 10 yards away there will be another bin that is empty! Then we have the morons who sit in cars, eat their fast food or picnic and dump the rubbish at the side of their car - even though there are bins very close by. As you can see in this video there are 80 bins along the drive from the North Bay to the South Bay, and many more bins in and around the town.
Please use the bins properly!
And if you are daft enough to buy The Sun newspaper you will find plenty of bins in Scarborough where you can dispose of it - it certainly qualifies as rubbish!

    Hi Steve, we were there on 21st August and were told of an incident the day before. Everyone’s aware of the tides as it’s posted in the two car parks so most people give it about half an hour before to start back, however the big car park tends to get busy and if you’re in the wrong lane you have to wait till everyone else has exited before you can go. So the last people out are already under pressure to get off the island . This isn’t normally a problem as everyone’s going the same way. However the day before us, there was an accident at the railway crossing on the shore side about half a mile up the road. A tractor had skewered itself and hay bails on the crossing bar and had become stuck fast.the police were called but we’re on the wrong side of the crossing as the cars coming off the island couldn’t get past and we’re starting to queue Up. It didn’t take long till the queue , which was not moving, was as far back as the refugee in the middle. Apparently the police had phone to get someone on the island to stop more cars jointing the queue, and hotfoot it past the queue to direct all the cars queued up into the car park of a restaurant to let the cars on the crossing get off it. . But the time they did that the queue was on the other side and the water was starting to lap across the road at the lowest point. Thus was the interesting sight of policemen encouraging cars to divert off the road and go into a car park they didn’t want to get stuck in. One policeman was parking them so close they were nose to tail and not able to get out as the next car was 30cms away. Then they had to encourage the drivers behind to ignore the speed limit to get them up and off the road so the ones who could not reverse off the causeway had to make a dash for it. They only just made it getting all the traffic off the road as the wash was getting bigger by the minute. So leave in plenty of time would be my advise.

    Hi, just a quick reply to some idiot comments --- my Late Father designed and built the causeway many years ago to allow vehicles and alike to cross the sands by a roadway to further developed tourism to the Island ---- knowing full well it was tidal! ---- The causeway was never designed to be used at high tide ! --- hence the crossing times -- if you ignore the crossing times or try to cross when the tide is on the turn and therefore coming in ---- its your fault --- nobody else's fault ---- Go and Enjoy this beautiful Island in safety by playing by the rules.

    You can't cue thick and anyone driving through after ignoring the tide times deserves everything they get. And a very big fine to pay for the rescue should be dished out

    Last month whilst on holiday in the UK from Australia, I took my grand kids to Scarborough to show them where I, as a toddler dug on the sands and had cruises on the "Caronia" and "Thornwick Bay" if I remember their names correctly, while an old sea dog played "Anchors Away" on an accordion. Back in the 21st century, the weather was atrocious, but we all loved the day. Thanks for the memories.

I don`t remember the Thornwick bay but we did have 3 boats that were a regular feature of the harbour, taking trips up and down the coast. Coronia, Regal Lady and Yorkshire lady.

    • @stevemessruther172
      @stevemessruther172 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I started to use them because they pronounced words far better than me - but I then figured that if I do a take with them speaking I can then use their voice as a guide for myself. Well that was the plan :) I agree that the voices are a bit annoying, mainly because there is very little emotion. I used male and female to try and break it up a bit. When I started this series I used what I had available but since then I have learnt a lot and also gained more experience with better software. One big advantage now is that I use a field recorder for my voice. That then gets synced up to the camcorder which allows me to talk without all the wind noise and pops and crackles that you often get from a camcorder/phone microphone. You will be pleased to know that they are being pensioned off :)

    On one of my clips someone - from Scotland - decided to make really negative comments and he seemed to think that I am putting Scotland down. That is not the case, I was supporting Scotland during their games and wanted them to win. They played some awful football and it was a shame for the fans and the team that they did not get to the last 16. England also played pretty crap but we have managed to get to the last 16 - we got further than our friends in Scotland. It`s that simple, there is no malice intended, England played crap and we got lucky that is why we are in the last 16. There have been a lot of teams who have just not turned up when it mattered - Italy for example. It`s football, shit happens.

      @@stevemessruther172 So the Scarborough that I am from (Ontario) takes its name from the bluffs in your Scarborough. Here's a partial entry from the Wikipedia etymology - "The area is named after the English town of Scarborough, inspired by Elizabeth Simcoe, the wife of John Graves Simcoe, the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada.[5] The bluffs along the Lake Ontario shores reminded her of the limestone cliffs in Scarborough, England. On August 4, 1793, she wrote in her diary, "The shore is extremely bold, and has the appearance of chalk cliffs, but I believe they are only white sand. They appeared so well that we talked of building a summer residence there and calling it Scarborough."[6] Before that, the area was named Glasgow, after the Scottish city.[7]"

    • @stevemessruther172
      @stevemessruther172 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@martinroncetti4134 Bit of a contrast between Scarborough and Glasgow . The limestone cliffs on our coast are a bit further down towards the south - Flamborough. Most of the cliffs either side of Scarborough are made up of mud and rocks that were pushed up after the last ice age ( at least 70,000 years ago). There are at least 7 other places in the world called Scarborough and all really take their name from where I live. The general theory is that we got the name from the Vikings who invaded Britain in the 600s AD (before that it was the Romans) . One Viking is said to have been called Thorgils Scathi - the name Scarborough is made up of two parts - Scar - meaning rock face, and borough - which is an area. We are also told that it was named after Scarthi - becoming Scathi`s Borough. Either way it dates back an awful long time. We were just a little fishing village and it stayed like that right up to the 1600s. In the 1700s the town started to expand and we had a lot of ship building. The big change came in 1850s when the railway came to town. Scarborough ships were to be found all over the world and just up the coast - Whitby - Captain Cook was based. In1793 our harbour was very busy with lots of shipbuilding and it was also the half way point between Newcastle and London. Newcastle and the North East had lots of coal mines. The coal would betaken down the coast to supply London. The vast majority of those ships would pull into Scarborough for supplies and also to take shelter when the weather was bad. One of my friends lived near Niagara Falls and via them I got to know some of it`s history. It appears to have been created 70,000 years ago during the last ice age and has been eroding away to what we see today. It was also 70,000 years ago that the same ice age created all the cliffs and hills around the coast of Filey, Scarborough and Bridlington.
