This was one of the tunes/dances which was part of our Playford/English repertoire when I was with Stickshift. The dance seems to have different versions - I have gone with one featured in a dance demo here: th-cam.com/video/qwKh3ObSiQA/w-d-xo.html To fill in a gap in the animation - I have added a circle left between the moves in the A part - probably too much for actual dancing. No fiddle rec...
Rusty Gully Merry Conclusion

Two old traditional tunes I used to try out some free audio software. Speed is way beyond the usual (for associated dances) - I heard 'Firestarter' on the radio and wondered how a similar drum beat would fit to 12/8, and kept the speed.

Niel Gow's Lament For the Death of His Second Wife

We're working on this tune after hearing David Swarbrick play it at a recent gig (with us as support). I liked the way he reached up for the D note coming out of 1st position I think I get there in a different way, but little things like this make all the difference to the sense and meaning of a tune. www.gawkey.co.uk

Tune changes at 3:12 and 4:30 Some of my favourite Scottish music played on my Luis and Clark carbon fibre violin. I recorded this one while trying to find the best spot for a clip-on mic, so thought I may as well put it up here.

So beautiful ❤.
That is lovely! Normal tuning?
Thanks - yes, normal tuning
🤤 'Promosm'
Excellent thanks!
Oh my goodness. This song is home.
Thank you :)
Fabulous
A tune and a half 👌
👌
It reminded me of grandad planting spuds. In the garden when I was a sprout, true midlands men we are
Feckn class, this tune is well saved
What an awesome sound Nigel! Top notch playing too! I'd recommend this to any fiddle fan...
Thanks Tim
Lovely! Thank you.
Hi really nice tune.! May use this for vlog for our ANZAC memorial and Coronavirus shutdown story please.
Sorry - I haven't been active on TH-cam for ages. Probably too late, but if not go ahead and use tune (it would be nice to give a link back to my original if possible)
I am slowly getting sophie together. enjoyful!
yeah!!
Lovely
Amazing
thanks Dean
Just wondering because of the title, is this the same violin song from "Darby O'Gill and the Little People"? Or a completely different one.
I don't know - probably different going from clips I've seen. There are quite a few tunes based on hunting themes from the old times
Beautiful and sad very much
Dude, I love your playing.
Great job, buddy! Love it.
Superb Playing.
nice twirly bits
Wonderful rendition
wow! that was wonderful!
This is great!
Yesss !
Thanks Robert
grand playing!
Absolutely lovely! Thank you !
To call this a 'tricky tune' is both apt and kind. I have called it far worse. One must master a lot of 'trick' techniques to do this. Great job!
thanks Nita - I'm still working on it :)
Excellent playing, I like your sound and your style, very unique and respectful of the tune. Thank you for posting.
Thanks Jean-Yves
OK, very nice, using it for my example collection of "Excellent Fiddle Style," but we don't even get your name! At least you tell us the names of the tunes (which a lot of TH-cam videos don't).
Thanks John - if you need it, my name is Nigel Walker :)
I love it! You are filling the space with just the fiddle
Thanks spunnek75 - we're working on a slow version into standard, probably to go on the next album. The 1st tune has a lot to give and reveals something new at different tempos.
Fine fiddling and very nice ornamentation. My only, mildly, critical comment is to keep rigidly focussed on the beat and don't lose it at the expense of pretty ornamentation. I personally like constructive criticism as it has helped me in the past but I feel a bit uncomfortable posting to someone I do not know who is already doing a fine job a playing these tunes. I also have that fakebook and it rocks as a source of great tunes!
Thanks Ben, no problem with criticism. Some variation in tempo, particularly at start before it settles, but probably due to something other than ornamentation. Beat is one important factor for a tune, but not something that needs to be 'rigid' - I'm working (now) more in terms of phrasing and accent, still needing a consistent beat but focused more on the landing points in the tune along with rises, falls, tension/release etc. bringing tunes to life. I'm my own harshest critic, I can always see something to be improved - waiting for perfect would mean nothing to share for a long time (if there was such a thing).
Glad you were not offended. I'm the same as you and am my own harshest critic. I look back at my videos posted a few years ago to remind myself how my playing has come on since then. Yes I know some people push and pull the beats to great effect but you could set a metronome to most of my favourite players such as Noel Hill and Tony McMahon etc! Incidentally I'm looking for some musicians locally to play with. Don't suppose there is any chance you live round Somerset and fancy some tunes?!!
***** I'm near Bicester, Oxfordshire - so unfortunately a bit too far - next time we're set to be down your way is November www.halswaymanor.org.uk/portal/alias__Halsway/lang__en/tabid__4461/eventid__563/default.aspx
I sure did,hup!!mighty stuff .
I enjoyed that.
Thanks John - hope you like some of the other tunes here too
Great song & great video :-)
Thanks lugh44
Superbly played and quite an individual sounding style too.
<3
I really enjoyed that. Very nicely played thank you
Thanks - the 1st tune also works slow - hopefully get to putting another version up sometime . . .
nice playing! and those strings sound really nice. great tone.
Thanks Mike, will pass message on to Matt
Thanks Edsel - I'll look those up and try them out
Matt (songwriter/singer) says 'He was a great uncle of Bernie Lyons my father in law. A wanderer who never settled - great fiddler, clock fixer, tried the priest hood but didn't like it, bit of a break down, just kept travelling rough and playing the fiddle. Nobody knows what happened in the end although Bernie did meet him a few times when a child. From County Mayo.'
The version here is based on the one in the Fiddler's Fake Book, and is very similar to the one in O'Neill's. I know a different tune by the same name (don't know where it came from) - maybe I'll record it later.
You da Man! But is that first tune really Pipe on the Hob?
Nice tunes:)
Thanks Many tunes can be found at 'folk tune finder' (do search, can't post the link here) All tunes in this this (FBI) selection come from the Fiddler's Fake Book - (easily ordered online)
