      Thanks! I'm almost certain it's a generic Coghlan 1005 fire steel. I'm in Canada, so I just get ferro rods from the dollar store or Canadian Tire. I think the fire steels are all made in the same place. They all have the same dimensions, just the names on the packaging are different.

    I know its just a cheap Mora but idk about grinding a divot in the spine. Just use the knife to cut a notch into a stick and you can do the same thing without comprimising the tip of your knife that you seem to be building a survival kit on...

    The paracord you put aside is also great tinder. Burns very well. I pull the fire twine partially out and fluff it up, then use your lighting choice, the paracord extends the burn

      Figured it out: It serves as a bearing block for friction fires.

  • @claa3009
    @claa3009 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Another option for the spindle bearing, instead of using a solid brass bearing, is to use the following roller bearing: "MR126ZZ Small Bearings 6mm Bore". This can be Googled to see what it looks like. Seems to be a perfect fit, and significantly reduces the heat on the handle due to spindle friction on the brass bearing. Epoxy it in the drilled hole, and you'd have a reduced friction bearing. Also, could drill a hole at the end of the handle for a lanyard (which is what I did to my Mora Companion).

    I'm 72...have split my share of wood with my splitter. One thing I have never understood...why do users always tend to stand when splitting? It's a rare occasion to use my splitter in the horizontal setup. Isn't it much easier to split while sitting on a stool? Do you prefer lifting/carrying your wood to the splitter?j

    A "get home bag" is a great idea! If you go into grizzly country, a second bear spray would be good. My concern is that after I've used the one on my belt I'll smell like a peppered steak. And noisemakers of some kind. For sleeping exposed, as well as the usual reasons. Banging on my stainless water bottle is easy but where bears are a serious concern I'd want bear bangers.

    Very nice. Great location and good video quality. Really nice shots of your cougar. I'm on the BC coast as well; a few cameras in the Powell River area, more in my home area south-east Vancouver Island, and impatiently waiting for the one on order at Cabela's. What part of the coast are you?

    I added a ferro rod, duct tape, a heap of paracord, fishing hooks, water purification tablets, fishing line and more. It was far to chunky so I removed it all. I now have a bare sheath again. I did my spine at 90 degrees.

    Maybe put the bow drill grommet on the side thats visible when the knife is in the sheath. Cause if I'm using the knife to hold down the drill I want the knife in the sheath for safety while working the bow with my other hand.

    • @westcoastwoodsman2289
      @westcoastwoodsman2289 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a good idea. I flip the knife over and put it back in the sheath while trying to use the bow. Doesn't fit great but still covers the blade. To be honest I haven't had a lot of success with the bow method of fire starting. I live in a very rainy part of the world so it's pretty much a last resort.

    • @BretCahill
      @BretCahill ปีที่แล้ว

    RUS: Если добавлено огниво, то вместо паракорда можно использовать джутовую или пеньковую веревку 2-3 мм в диаметре, её можно использовать в качестве растопки. Еще и стоит раз в 5 дешевле, рулона хватит на много лет.

    Instead of the bicycle tubing can you not use heat shrink wrap"?

    • @westcoastwoodsman2289
      @westcoastwoodsman2289 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching! You definitely could use large shrink wrap. I like to use bicycle tube because you could use it to make bands or burn it if needed. Use whatever you have handy to fasten the fire steel to the sheath. Its most important thing is to have the fire steel attached and with the knife when you need it.

    Some nice cats, even a house cat. That one is had to tell as your trigger speed is slow, cat was past center of the frame before the camera cut in. To make the entire video more enjoyable for viewers ( me actually) edit out the blank frames. for instance after the bear walks through, it is 24 seconds before the next animal. This happened a lot so I stopped watching after the bear video at at 6:53 when the next animal appeared. My videos are far from perfect but I try to only show when there is action.Thanks for sharing.
