Making Plimsolls railway wheels 02
In 2016, I finally succeeded in finding the right folks to make a set of unique LM25 aluminium alloy railway wheels for Plimsoll my 1957 Series I Land Rover. This is a short video of the final machining of the cast wheels.

This is the fifth time I've had the fun of driving Plimsoll, my 1957 Series I Land Rover the full length of Severn Valley Railway's fantastic line, from Bridgnorth to Kidderminister. In celebration of the Queen's 70th Jubilee, Taw Valley has been painted purple and renamed Elizabeth II. Using the same paint, a spare bonnet was painted purple and fitted* to Plimsoll for the day. * It didn't quit...

At the close of Northampton & Lamport Railway's 2021 August Bank Holiday Gala, I was able to trundle Plimsoll, my 1957 Series I Land Rover, up and down the line, for a second time. With the help of Martin Lawrie, Steve Hartley, and Thomas Allen from N&LR, a fun time was had by all.

    What are Plimsoll’s normal (and maximum) speeds when running on railway tracks?

    • @marksaville512
      @marksaville512 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He obeys whatever speed limits are in force. So, on Tanfield it was 15mph and on the SVR and NYMR it was 25mph. However, on some sections of one of the lines I've driven, I was permitted higher speeds, but you wouldn't want to do 40mph for very long. 30mph is fine, though. I'm always accompanied by an engine driver and what he says goes. :)

    • @marksaville512
      @marksaville512 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, they're completely separate lines. I believe the Wensleydale line has a link to the main line. NYMR certainly has a link at Grosmont, to allow to run into Whitby, with some trains. :)

    Presumably, although the aluminium wheels are smaller in diameter than the original road wheels, "Plimsoll" has virtually the same speed potential on rails as on road? Restricted to 25mph on rails(?) and in what gear please? Interesting project, thanks for posting.

    • @marksaville512
      @marksaville512 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wheels make the speedo over-read so I rely on the SatNav to give accurate speeds. The usual speed limit on these lines is 25mph, but on one short section, we clocked over 40mph in top gear, the gear I use most of the time on the rails. :)

    Something Ive always wanted to do in a car is fit railway wheels. Its a fascinating idea, your own personal car, seeing the hidden views the railway has to offer. So how loud was it with steel wheels?

    • @marksaville512
      @marksaville512 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wheels are cast from LM25 aluminium, not steel, although they are as 'hard as iron' due to the heat treatment process. They're not too noisy, but then it's all relative in a Series I. :)
