Ive heard this song since it was released and I finally read the lyrics in December, 2024! Wow I always wondered what the song was about.

This is my favorite song ever since i discovered it ,i'm a pianist and i specially love the background vocal harmony near the end of the song ,it's marvelous !

Man everyone says this is metaphor for narcissistic abuse, but it just sounds like they guy is cheating with the girl and she's in love with him so he says to shut up so his girlfriend doesn’t hear

I remember this song from the 80's. I always thought it had a catchy sound and the voice gave it a beautiful melody. I didnt pay it much mind. Then now some 40 years later I randomly heard it and looked up the lyrics and really studied it. If you have ever been in this kind of relationship and had your heart manipulated in such a way it becomes this song becomes very powerful.

What does this song mean to you?

I was a young woman in love several times with guys who didn't feel the same. That's just the way life is, sometimes. That's why I learned the difference between having "fun" and being in a relationship and also why I never married or had kids. You learn this lesson asap, hopefully...if you are getting treated like this . Better to be single and not be in love with anybody.

I'm so sorry for all of the other survivors of DV. I remember when this song came out, once I really listened to the lyrics, I knew what it was referring to but very sadly, it wasn't until 15+ yrs. until abuse was taken seriously & words such as narcissist, sociopath, anti social personality etc were discussed and the public has *hopefully* listened and learned!

So many people seem to miss the fact that this song is being sung from the POV of a young and naive mistress addressing a married man who's desperately trying to keep her from emotionally spilling everything in public and destroying his marriage and/or family. There is no protagonist in this story. I guess people just ignore the lyrics that they don't comprehend. "She might overhear". Who is "she"? Huh? Who could this "she" possibly be? Who would be relevant to mention in this context? Think about it... _REALLY_ hard. Not every fucking song is about you and the last asshole you happened to date.
