Doss-Marlowe: History in Sight
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 5 มี.ค. 2021
Welcome to History In Sight! This is Jarred Marlowe and Andy Doss, and we are two history nuts covering mostly Southern Virginia historical subjects and anything else we think is historical in context and interesting. However, we will touch on some broader historical items from time to time. We love history and like to show how all sorts of things tie together.
We hope to share some valuable "insight" into what we show here in our videos, and put history "in sight" to everyone watching.
Please subscribe and help us grow the channel, so that we can continue producing content, and much oblige!
Jarred does a lot of the research and content; Andy does most of the video editing and production.

Pittsylvania County - 250th Anniversary of the Committee of Safety
The formation of the Pittsylvania County Virginia Committee of Safety on January 26, 1775, marked a pivotal step in the county's preparation for the American Revolution. It demonstrated the resolve of local citizens to unite in defense of their liberties and property, aligning themselves with the broader colonial cause. This committee organized the county's militia, enrolling 1,438 men into 27 companies and establishing a leadership structure to ensure readiness for the conflict ahead. Their actions reflected the growing spirit of resistance against British tyranny and underscored the critical role of local governance in mobilizing for independence.
This commemoration was held at Callands, Virginia, site of the first court of Pittsylvania. Bill Guerrant, president of the society, was the keynote speaker.

มุมมอง 79021 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this video, we discuss the life, trial, and execution of Odell Waller, a Black man and sharecropper from Pittsylvania County, Virginia who received what many would call an unfair trial due to the circumstances. The case drew national attention in the middle of World War II and involved interesting political ideologies coming to bat for Waller. #history #localhistory #virginiahistory #blackhi...

The history of white ignorance, racism and violence still continues in 2025 😢
THE TIME FOR CHANGE,WAS PRESENT!!✔ IT TOOK A LONG, LONG TIME COMING!!🎶 🎶 🎶 BUT I KNOW A CHANGE GONNA COME!!, OH YESSSSS IT WILL!!! THANKS!! 😂SAM!!@✔🎉🎉🎉
I have so many happy memories of taking young my son and his friends for picnics and fun at WR ranch. They could run wildly around to their hearts content and or sit and watch the impromptu polo matches - joyous, carefree times. And the beautiful WR home. It was everything you hoped Will Rogers was, friendly, gracious, unpretentious yet somehow tastefully elegant. I am heartbroken for all those who lost their homes and businesses to these fires and I know that losing a historic house isn't at all the same as thousands of people losing everything they possessed. And, I still mourn for what was lost at The Ranch. Irreplaceable.
It is truly heartbreaking to think of the history that was lost, but it's nice to see the positive memories you have of it.
I am currently reading the book "The Hairstons An American Family In Black and White," by Henry Wiencek. Your video is the icing on the cake! Thank you for this historic presentation. My grandfather on my mother's side is George Marshall Hariston, who lived in Martinsville Virginia. We are Hairstons of color.
Thanks for watching and sharing! That book was definitely an inspiration for us as well. Check out our other Hairston videos too!
Baloney
Why would you say that?
Keanu Reeves? That’s why.
Suppose I'm interested in why you dislike him enough to put a negative comment on our video.
@@yourhistoryinsight He is a celebrity and nobody of importance to anyone.
Great narrator!
❤ DEO VINDICE ! ONE OF THE GREATEST AMERICAN GENERALS THAT EVER LIVED . ❤
God Bless General Robert E Lee Deo Vindice.
A sad story about the horrors of sharecropping. God rest his soul 💔
Thank you @taymae420 for checking it out!

Do you also consider our founding fathers traitors?

Back then you were a Statesman before you were a Countryman. You're not exactly wrong though. Did you seem a little butthurt
Can you do a video on the “Cake” house near the DMV?
It may be a while before we can get to it, but if you want something on the Wedding Cake house, Tom has a book on it!
@ I just wanna know what the history behind it is, like why was it built and when
The huge lawns were turned into polo fields… 😢
This is so sad for me also. I had hoped to one day visit it and the museum. I've heard of Will Rogers all my life. A couple years ago while working on my genealogy I learned he is an ancestor on my paternal side. Since learning this I have done a lot of research on his life. I still would love to go visit the museum. RIP Will!
Sorry to hear; the fact that it affects you in such a personal way makes it all that more tragic and humanizes the place even more.
@@yourhistoryinsight Thank you!
Thank you Gov Newsome and Mayor Bass for all your failed leadership and failure to prepare for wildfires
This ranch was NOT in Hollywood ! It is much nearer the coast in the Pacific Palisades area.
Our team mourns the recent loss of this treasured landmark; it's so sad that it won't be around for future generations to enjoy.
Tragic!!! So sad.. glad I got to visit. Loved the guest house
I'm so sad to learn that this estate was destroyed in fire. And apparently only some of the artifacts inside the house were saved. Ugh, so hard to accept.
Sad news to hear it caught on fire 2025
So very sad and sorry that it is now gone, consumed in that damn fire.
I very much enjoyed this video. My 5x great grandfather, John King and his two brother in laws, Andrew Joyce and Capt. David Lanier were landowners on Marrowbone River/Creek. I have located an indentured between Lanier and George Hairston with John King as security.
That’s awesome! Thank you for watching!
Not much of a heads up lol but they look cool 👍
We had to wait until Christmas Eve to get the footage, but make sure to see it next Christmas!
Thanks, very interesting
We are glad you enjoyed!

Love the videos Andy and co.
Awesome video
Thanks for stopping by!
We usually went to the Family Drive-in for movies and once in a while to the Rives or the Martin or the Roxy in Martinsville, even though we lived a mile from Bassett. I remember going to the Stone only once. Someone in the balcony set off a firecracker and I thought it was a gun! I wasn't anxious to return. But I dearly loved Bassett, and it pains me to see what has happened to it.
oh my!
Andy, I'm gonna start calling you the "Ron Howard" of Bassett. Love all these documentaries you and your team are doing. A job very well done. Thank you so much for sharing all these stories.
I love their Gaither Christian album
Yes!
Love their music to this day!
we agree!
How sad that these historical monuments have been allowed to disintegrate. This history will be lost unless more is done to preserve it. It looks like many of the homes are already irreparable. Has no one else taken an interest in preserving this history? I read the book that was written about the Hairston family. It was very interesting. I’d love to visit these places.
Progress often has surpassed our desire to maintain history.
Responsible for the 16th amendment, income tax.
Where in Bassett is this?
This is near Bassett High School, adjacent to Collins-McKee-Stone funeral home.
She was, and IS, a true American hero. Thank you, Ms. Lacks.
Incredible...
When I think about all of these countries where people are starving and malnourished, I wonder why kudzu and other invasive edibles, including perennials, are not planted in those places as ever-growing sources of food for the people and animals. If it grows a foot a day as reported, the people in need will always have enough to eat. All parts of kudzu are edible, except the seeds and seed pods. The leaves, flowers, and the tender ends of the vines can be eaten.
awesome
Do Cassius Marcellus Clay next. It’s unbelievable that there aren’t tons of movies about him!
My Great Grandfather was born in that house. Henry Hairston Hurt.
i’m really curious on what the henry county school system used to be and all the schools that’s been used in henry county i was wondering if u could make a video on that is that’s not too much
That is a good idea. We will see if we can figure out how to cover that without getting too detailed, that's probably a deep subject.
Peter TP Hairston is in my ancestry tree as my 11th grandfather or so
I’m a double Hairston and I’m so invested in my roots
