Vagabond I
This is the first in a series of small projects I'm starting called Vagabond. After periods where I'm making a lot of music, I often find myself in more of a mood to learn and absorb. But I still want to find ways to create during those learning periods.
So I came up with Vagabond: small projects with a mix of covers and original music to tie them together. This is a space for me to have fun, experiment, and learn about the harmonic and lyrical things that make me tick from my favorite songs. (and learning about the production side of things, cause that stuff is so hard for me) I'll also be sharing some of the photography that I took during the period of time that I was working on the music!
Today is Indulge Me by Moses Sumney, and Being Alive by Stephen Sondheim. Moses Sumney often achieves this incredible intimacy within his music, both sonically and lyrically, that's always been really appealing to me. Indulge Me is a perfect song to me. It's simple, but still has a depth and almost a desperation to it.
Being Alive felt like an interesting match because it shares those themes from Indulge Me: seeing others engaging with this part of life that you don't have access to, having an almost cynical view of it, but then arriving in a place of desperately desiring it. This song was a challenge because I wanted to try singing in a way that I haven't sung for many years. It's tough not to be critical of your own voice, but I'm genuinely proud of how this one turned out.

This is an introductory idea that came out of some worldbuilding I was doing a while back. I had a desire to make a full project using the aesthetics of this little sound world as a north star, but the inspiration hasn't fully struck me yet. This song has been sitting on my computer for a long time, so I figured maybe posting it will inspire me to return to this project and make some more music...

This EP was my first attempt at making a cohesive music project a few years ago, and I wanted to find ways to express the quiet, slow moments I'd have on my morning and evening walks. I've just loved this piano sound, which piano do you have and how did you record this album?
Thanks for listening, and I love the sound of this piano too. All the instruments on this album are actually VSTs because I don't currently have access to a piano. Most of the piano sounds you're hearing on this album are using Spitfire Audio's "Intimate Grand Piano" which is a sample library they recorded using a Steinway Model A grand piano. I love how warm the sound is, so I tend to use that for a lot of my music!

Thanks so much for listening, I'm glad you liked it! I don't have plans of getting my music on Spotify at the moment, but it is something I've thought about. I think I like the community feeling of TH-cam, but I'm definitely considering putting some of my music on streaming platforms in the future!

15:07 Just beautiful. Genuinely made me feel emotional hearing the piano pierce through the choir of synths. The continual build over the course of the track leading into a fade out is absolutely heartbreaking. Like an final goodbye that was never spoken.
