How often do you think about the Roman Empire?
A recent TikTok trend was asking about why men thought regularly about the Roman Empire. Why? In this video I give some thoughts.
This is a companion video to my website blog post found at:
www.takingterritory.com/post/how-often-do-you-think-of-the-roman-empire
Some of the reason are that Men are hard wired for civilisational advancement. We think about dominion all day long, sometimes in concrete terms and in other ways more abstractly.
Empire, in our minds, represents a sense of dynamism and adventure. It is a about being part of a greater whole. An exciting moment in history, rather than being a loose, disconnected and isolated ball-bearing rattling around a purposeless system. The position most men find themselves in today.
Men hunger for purpose, to be part of something much bigger and this may be why they think of empire. As they look around in the modern West, there is little to capture the imagination with its hollow corporatism and a system set up to disadvantage them and take away their greatest strengths.

Taken from this blog post: www.takingterritory.com/post/a-sense-of-urgency Ah the mid-life crisis does it really exist? I think so but is it necessarily a bad thing when it forces us to think about life on a deeper level. For so long we just go with the flow and when we do the days, weeks and months go in a blur and we have nothing to show for it. This is what it has been like for me as the mem...
Is there a cure for woke?

The world has changed. The Christian consensus no longer exists. Rubbish thinking dominates and the West is worse for it. Can we come back from the cliff edge? I think the chances are not great and the speed and momentum is against us. There is however an antidote to the situation but the patient will not take it willingly. This is Biblical Christianity but even Christians are not immune from c...
What are men good for? - A response
มุมมอง 325ปีที่แล้ว
Recently there was a viral video asking, "what are men good for?" Yes, the answers from the those interviewed were predictable and lame. Sure, modern manhood is disappointing and vapid but that hasn't happened by accident. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Here is short riposte from a Christian perspective answering my men are useful. Read a fuller exposition at www.takingterritory....
How to be better
มุมมอง 72 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a video essay on excellence. Why is it important? Why do we pursue it? Is it to do with original sin, and the fall of man in the Garden of Eden? Is it an attempt to restore what was once lost? Why do we try to redeem ourselves through our works and efforts. Why are we not capable of continued and ongoing excellence? Can we be excellent in every aspect of our lives? No; and we don't need...

A video essay linked to my blog at www.takingterritory.com/post/worlds-problems-not-yourswhere I explore the utility of "the news". I always used to think it was a good thing to watch or read the news and it probably was, a long time ago but now it is a waste of our time. Every news story is sensationalised and hyped with built in fear factor to keep you glued to the screen. If like me you are ...

This is a companion video to the blog post at www.takingterritory.com/post/your-character-defines-your-legacy a certain point in our lives we start to think about our legacy. Checklists change lives
มุมมอง 62 ปีที่แล้ว
This week I want to talk about checklists and how they can be used to put you in control of your life. It reinforces routine each day and 'flap lists' can be used whenever things are out of control and you need a cognitive crutch when the adrenaline is flowing. www.takingterritory.com/post/checklists-change-lives
What do I mean by "Taking Territory"
มุมมอง 112 ปีที่แล้ว
I live by a personal philosophy of "Taking Territory". I see life as a military campaign. It is based around personal development, curiosity and living responsibly. Defensible walls are a good thing. You have a zone that you control and just beyond that lies the territory that you wish to expand into. There is no point trying to take ground if your house isn't in order first. That must be atten...
Review of Feuerhand Tyropit

This a demonstration and review of the Feuerhand Tyropit and a companion video to my blogpost. This is a relatively smokeless firepit. If you really want 100% smokeless you will need a hyper-efficient 3 stage burn woodstove! This is 70-80% better than standard open woodfire. It was a very windy day and drizzly day. Just what you would expect in these damp British Isles. Original blog post found...

Reuniting the Roman Empire has been the goal of every great man in western history for the last 1500 years.

100% agree... This is why it is so important that we have worthy leaders. There is a theory of just war and at times it is necessary but the long term effects on a nation can be disastrous. The UK never fully recovered from WW1 in physical, spiritual nor financial terms - such a tragic waste of mostly young (male) life. Lions led by donkeys.

@@takingterritory4057 That's alright I accept the same challenge the Romans accepted when they invaded Scotland, Ireland and Wales. If they could overcome the Britons, Cantiaci Caledonians, Ordovices, Silures, Iceni, Brigantes, Catuvellanii, Hibernian _tuatha_ , Atrebates, etc., then I can too.

Absolutely, wise words from Proverbs. The challenge is also about how we are being conditioned to think about things. I’ve had mixed success giving up on the news .. there always seems to be a reason to tune in. Fear sells but I have to remind myself that my hope lies elsewhere and that what we see on the news is distraction and misdirection. We risk taking our eye if what really counts.

@gregory. All jokes aside this is a hugely important issue for men of our day. The compatibility of the woman we marry in terms of her faith and worldview will have a huge impact on our lives. Things aren’t easy out there from what I hear. However, it starts with us first but frustrating if we are doing the work and the pickings seem slim.

hi! can you comment if it keeps feet warm?, or just like other firepits with secondary burn gives a lot of heat outside vertically. thank you

    • @MarkMurdock
      @MarkMurdock 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It mostly throws the heat ‘up and out’. While the burn is strong it may reach your feet but as it dies down probably not so much.

Solid production and a great message. Keep doing this, momentum may take time but once your people start finding you it will happen! Constructive Criticism: You talk with your hands a lot and yet we can't really see your gestures. Perhaps reframe your shot so your hands are more visible - particularly when you motioned with the phone.
