A family of 5 coati (coatimundi) lives at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior, AZ this Winter. They have been foraging there, and especially like the date palms. They will shake the leaves and branches to loosen the berries, then eat them from the ground.
I was watching them do this when a tree rat came out of the leaves. The coati rushed the trunk and one grabbed up the rat. I watched it kill the rat and take if off into the underbrush. The rest of the coati followed. This is how I learned that coati are omnivores!
A volunteer guide and groundskeeper were there too and said they have NEVER seen this behavior before. Glad I was there to experience it!
