Splitting Wood With a Maul / Axe at Chef Stan's Strong City

A short video of me splitting some wood at Chef Stan's Restaurant in Strong City, KS. This tree had been cut down for about 2 years and the chunk I'm splitting is a where 2 branches "Y" which is always a tough spot. Why did I post this?.... just for the heck of it.
Roof Leak Found

It is not uncommon for shingles to blow off. For this reason, be careful to use enough nails (as recommended by the shingle manufacturer) and do not sink the nails too deep. To quickly seal shingles down in the cold months, use clear "Lexel" sealant. Footage taken at the Pioneer Bluffs, Matfield Green KS
Riding Mower Spins Then Stops, Wont Start, Compression Release, Troy Bilt
มุมมอง 103K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Mower not starting? Does it spin a little then stop suddenly? Most people assume it's a bad battery or starter, which it could be, but often it's a faulty "compression release mechanism" which is attached to the camshaft. .....This device slightly opens the exhaust valve upon startup which reduces the compression. Once the engine is running, this spring loaded device remains out of the way by c...
Crawl Space Humidity and Condensation

Why I believe crawl spaces need to be kept closed and sealed along with a fan blowing air to the outside which will keep the crawlspace under negative pressure and prevent dirty air from getting into house. 1839 Log Cabin. Permachink

Kind of rare to find a Cabin built in 1839 which is still being lived in and the original structure hasn't changed all that much. This is outside of Nashville. Some cool things I want to share is chinking, graining, and the hand chiseled fireplace stones. Enjoy.

Shellac Primer , Zinsser
มุมมอง 24K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This stuff is amazing! If you want to paint a glossy surface and you want to make sure the final coat of paint will stick, use a shellac base primer. Made in part from the "lac" bug of some remote parts of the world, this primer provides EXCELLENT adhesion and EXCELLENT stain and odor blocking. It dries fast, has kind of a powerful unique smell during painting, and is really thin. The paint fum...

That's an octopus? My family home had an octopus gravity furnace! That still works today! As I grew up in the home, it was always comfortable even on the coldest Chicago night! But that one is tiny compared to the one in my brothers home.

Something he didn't mention. From the splice outward is the jurisdiction of the power company. The home owner has little say in what the power company uses. Other than to tell them that he has upgraded his service from 100 amp to 200 amp. It's up to the power company if they want to change the drop.

How do you know if it’s 120 but who cares about that, how many AMPS is it? No you don’t know! Knob and tube ran a main line 30-50-100 amps and then branched off of that which is why there are usually only 4 or 5 fuses for a WHOLE HOUSE. So, DO NOT DO THIS - AMPS ARE WHAT KILLS YOU, and you have NO IDEA how many amps are there running through that wire. How many times did you say you would get in trouble or you shouldn’t do it well HELLO then STOP! BEING AN IDIOT. I have reported your video as being dangerous. This would be safer and recommended . th-cam.com/video/AG5KPuPRLSo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=WNmranppL7B_rJir

I found an easier way to get it started. I manually turn the engine clockwise to just past top dead center of the compression stroke. From that point there is enough momentum where the engine will continue to spin and start.

Yeah it just digs in and and digs in, and because it's so stringy it just doesn't split. I have elm all over my property and also maple, and I split all the maple, then the next day it was elm time. It took a single hour of trying to split elm and in comparison I got maybe 5% elm split compared to maple in that time frame. What turned into a single day for maple would have taken me weeks and half killed myself in the process. Nasty stuff. Although I will say this, elm is AMAZING firewood. It really is. It burns great and lasts long.

I have an octopus! The building is well over 100 years old and is in the oldest part of town (which was settled early to mid 1800s) and I believe I was told it is the ORIGINAL furnace. When it was first installed it burned coal! It was converted and they added a unit that burns natural gas years ago. I really hate it, my gas bills are astronomical in the winter, my sinuses get irritated whenever it kicks on after a period of non-use, it takes up an uncomfortable amount of space in an otherwise spacious basement, and the heat does not flow to the master bedroom at all (yes, I checked and re-checked every possible reason for this, it appears that it is just positioned too far away from that room and the room is on a corner of the building with two outside adjacent walls. It gets so cold in that room in the winter even with the furnace running that water can freeze if you leave it overnight. It also has the exact same asbestos lined tubes to carry the heat and they are difficult to not disturb because you have to duck and lean to avoid hitting them with your face just to travel back and forth across the basement so I am perpetually worried that I am living in a big box of poison. It even looks terrifying because the main chamber is a round shape just like a giant basement octopus, it is literally a nightmare furnace.

In your case it sounds like it's time for a modern gas furnace. Should be able to use existing ductwork.

I ran into a problem yesterday at a clients house and could not unmount their undermount cast iron bar sink. I was able to use my isolating tool to make a 1 inch clearance. Then I attempted to use my reciprocating saw to finish the job. Nooooo Bueno. Not sure what type of epoxy or gorilla hair glue 😆 they used, but it was eating my blades for lunch. Have you ever ran into this? Or what blades do you recommend? Is it as heating it up like you demonstrated?

We had one of those in our old house in Northern Ohio. Ran consistently into the late 90's until our house was demolished. We moved into a newer home with a Trane XE 80 furnace now 19 years old. We pretty much had our Trane XE 80 rebuilt 3 times since we moved there in 1998. From control boards going out, fan motors burning out, heat exchanger needing replaced & just about everything else in there all replaced at least 3 times since 1998. That old Homart furnace my grandfather had installed in early 1960's (similar to the one in this video) other than replacing a gas regulator, replacing a burner, thermostat & having to relight the pilot light every now and then was by FAR a better furnace then this new modern junk they build now, asbestos & all. EPA more concerned with emissions & that's all great but if a home is poorly insulated emission laws don't matter.
