When I watch this movie it's hard to believe I'm watching actors. They've plied their craft so brilliantly, I find it hard to believe they aren't the real characters. Or maybe I just want to believe there really were heroes of this stature in the day.

The most underrated part of this scene is the echo of the bat hitting the ball and the ball crashing into the stands! No cheering fans, just the sound of POWER!

you can read his lips, he's yelling "Mom!" or "Mama" and how he tries to run to her, makes me tear up... It's like the very definition of the child we once was, running to someone we love and see as our mother... the only one we could trust... but seeing how he's in a frenzy, and running to her, not being able to reach her as she slowly descends the stairs... which I know is an example of either hell, afterlife, or purgatory...

Bernard Malamud, the author of The Natural borrowed a lot from real life for the book. For instance, the guy who sits in the dark office is fashioned after Branch Rickey who also sat in the dark, and in the beginning of the movie, the greasy looking fat guy called "The Whammer" is clearly supposed to be Babe Ruth. During a train stop in the Midwest Ruth got off the train and some fans gathered around so he entertained them by hitting a few balls pitched to him by a teammate. Some anonymous kid came out of the crowd, a regular farmboy apparently, and asked if he could pitch to Ruth. The kid struck Ruth out on 3 consecutive pitches. BUT . . . Ruth DID strike out a lot and was possibly intoxicated from the long train ride too. The team itself - the Knights - is likely based on the St. Louis Browns - the losingest team in MLB history which won its only World Series in 1944 while all the other teams were short their best players due to the draft.
