The baurua "Taratai", a flying proa
มุมมอง 9K14 ปีที่แล้ว
Named after a villeage in Tarawa, Kiribati (ex Gilbert Islands). It was buid the traditional way, without using a single nail. The planks are secured with coconut rope. It sailed against the prevailing winds 2700 kilometers to Fiji, proving Thor Heyerdahl wrong. It can be admired today in the New Zealand Maritime Museum.

My absolute Favorite Sailing video Ever....:)
This canoe te Baurua n Taratai was built by my grandfather Teauba. I want to know if it is still in a good condition,
In December 1975, When I was 28 years old, I joined Jim Siers in Taratai Village to assist with the work building Baurua Taratai. I remember Teauba well, he was then quite old but knew a lot about canoe building. Later I sailed on the Baurua with Jim, Peter Barton and 10 Gilbertese men to Fiji. Once there, (Suva), Taratai was put on a freighter to Wellington NZ. It was located outside the old Dominion Museum building in Wellington for a number of years. Jim had intended it to go on Display at "Te Papa" (New National Museum), but as construction for Te Papa was delayed for some years, Taratai was sent up to Auckland and she now resides in the Maritime Museum on the Auckland Harbour Waterfront. I have visited her there on several occasions. I understand they had to shorten the width of the outrigger platform to suit the limited display area. But she is still there in all her glory. I quite often think about my time in Taratai village, and hope the rising sea levels are not too damaging. Kel Nairn. Wellington, New Zealand. Sept 2016

Do you have a copy of the whole clip? I watched when I was a young boy. Really good story. James Siers wanted to proof the traditional legend that the Gilbertese did travel to Samoa against the prevailing winds. I would like to get a copy. Do you know where to get one? Please let me know.
I took many good idea from this film.

This kind of sailing is the best way to use the sail..
It is the audio not my computer. I had seen this when my uncle was alive, He was the captain of this Baurua. Wow this really brings tears to my eyes. I love this village and especially the people of Taratai. Thank you for posting it.
