We went on vacation to Springfield MO, we went through Bas Pro's aquarium and animal museum and then went through fantastic caverns and the zoo while we were there. At the zoo we came up on the lions and past them and came back as they were all passed out. As soon as I turned my camera on this big boy was like :Ok ok I'll put on a show and then I'll go back to sleep. Lol, it was awesome, I couldn't believe I got it on video.

    Hi Brent, I’ve got some small Dexter heifers I’ll be breeding bed fall. Curious what size calves your usually bulls produce? I’d really like to breed them go Red Polls but don’t want to stress them too much on their first calves.

    Are theses the same as South Polls . From Alabama breeder ???? Plus are they just as good if not ??????

    • @Digger927
      @Digger927 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they aren't the same. Red poll breed was a portion of the foundation stock that was used to build the composite breed named south polls by Teddy Gentry. The south poll qualities of doing well on a broad range of forages, easy calving, milk production, calf care and easy handling are mostly attributed to the red poll contribution to the south poll breed. I dont know if they are just as good as the south poll breed as I don't have any south polls to compare them side by side. They're not as expensive as south polls. I think the south polls have a little tighter frame but I haven't seen enough advantage in the south polls to justify their cost by any means. I prefer the heritage breed the south polls gained their best traits from but that's just me.

    Sorry to hear your not getting much rain. We been really lucky here in Ohio and had weekly rains since the beginning of July. Your herd looks great. I can't believe how much the herd has grown since the last time I tuned in. WOW! Curious about the bottle calves, did the mama's not want to feed them? Cockle Burrs suck! I have a few big areas to spot mow soon too.

    • @Digger927
      @Digger927 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jason, yes sir they've done pretty well so far increasing numbers. The had 11 calves last fall and another 15 this spring. The youngest heifers are bred to drop another 15 calves this fall. The bottle calves...one was maybe my fault. They were both first calf heifers. The first one wouldn't feed her calf, every time it's try to suck she'd move or kick. He udder was super tight, I'm sure sore. I didn't have facilities to catch her at the time and milk her out by hand or she'd probably have been fine with the calf. The second was much the same but I didn't give her much time to try to work it out and take a chance on it. I had other things going on and didn't think I could afford to chance leaving the calf with her and risk it not getting it's colostrum so I took it straight away and put it on the bottle. I'm going to start mowing today maybe.

    • @JCsBees
      @JCsBees 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Digger927 Did you buy some colostrum powder or did you have a dairy farm close where you can get it? I started mowing at the beginning of July, after 3 different break downs I am finally down to the last 5 acres. Then like you I have some cockle burr to spot mow. I'll be glad to take the brush hog off though when the time comes, it's been a total PITA this year. lol

    • @Digger927
      @Digger927 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think that should probably be called disturbance. Tillage inverts the layers and is typically a lot deeper than the three inch rut that a heavy herbivore might leave. disturbance is a good thing as it’s aerating the soil and allowing water to percolate down through the profile. Tillage is mostly a destructive process that leaves soils without aggregates and collapsing the ecosystems in the soil horizons.

    • @Digger927
      @Digger927 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and your comment. Potato, potato...in the no till world of soil health any soil disturbance is considered tillage...1 inch or 12. I've heard the experts complain about minimum tillage tools that only ruffle up the top layer of soil an inch or two. You have a point there but it's pretty nitpicky to my broader point. Tillage in general is more focused on turning soil over deeply with steel. I've heard many experts say nature doesn't do tillage...no nature doesn't pull a plow but nature churns soils all the time by other process. I'm a no till guy, been in persistent no till since 2012 but there's plenty of fiction to dispell that's unnecessary.
