    Thank you for such a clearly thought out and well presented video. This is my first attempt at viewing the nighttime wildlife on my extremely rural AZ property. I’ve provided a water source for years and last week have finally gotten myself a trail cam!

    Right now my camera picks up traffic at night that is at least 200' away. Is there a way to shorten the distance the camera will see motion without affecting the quality of close movements. Does this involve the PIR sensitivity setting which I have presently set at high?

    Excellent! The Southern Flying squirrel is the little beauty I’m trying to capture on my first trail camera. I just ordered the Medaise P100 from Amazon up here in Canada. Recently, while out night riding on my mountain bike , thru a nearby city park, I saw a quick glimpse of the infamous “handkerchief “ ! In the last few weeks I’ve been taken Niger seed over and placing on a stump during the night(near original sighting). The seeds are being eaten but I don’t know if it’s by my little flying friend or some other critter. I plan on taking the camera over at night and removing it during the morning so it’s not swiped. I really appreciate you putting the time and your expertise into these videos! Thank you!

    Thanks for this tutorial - it's made my decision! But I have a couple of questions before I buy. I see in the spec that the Motion Activated Distance is 25m (82ft). Is that the same as Capture Range? And why would you adjust the sensitivity? I want to follow the hedgehogs in my garden so I will be looking at close range (maybe 5-10 feet). Would this camera still give a good pic at that close range? And then, batteries. I take on board yourcomment about rechargeable. But how long would a standard disposable duracell battery last if, for example, I set 2x 2hour periods of video each night - would they last a night, a week, a month? Many thanks, and I'll be watching again without a doubt when I get the camera!

    • @randyb964
      @randyb964 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply, just saw this. For close shots, I enjoy the SL122 Pro Trail Camera aka Meidase P40 with a wide-angle lens. I use it not bc of the wide angle per se, but because it doesn't blur with my close-up shots. The S3 doesn't handle close-ups well. The reason I turn the sensitivity up or down usually has to do with how many leaves and branches are nearby. You'll notice in some areas the cameras are triggered way too often by nothing extraordinary eating up the batteries and filling up your memory card. If that happens, maybe clip a branch or two or turn down the sensitivity. If you only set the camera for a few hours a night, I wouldn't be surprised if they lasted at least a few weeks. I use a variety of many disposable AA batteries that work fine including Duracell. I wish rechargeables worked great with the cams, it's just they don't have quite as much voltage.

      Lots of waffle & mediocre explanations of the 'whys" for a quality tutorial. The capture range is different to detection range, & both differ with conditions. A photo in daylight vs torchlight for capture range. Detection range is the motion sensor trigger range. Temperature & atmospheric conditions affect that. But more important, the size/activity/proximity of the triggering entity. Sensitivity can be adjusted up or down to compensate. Program the camera, then sit it on the kitchen table & take a series of experimental photos/videos to test range & quality of that individual camera. If behaviour study is critical, video. If presence/absence, photos will often do the job. Photo burst of 3 will usually show what's happening, with 10, 20, 30 sec intervals as options to try for suitability. Photos are much quicker to check & save the ones wanted, & take less SD space. & have field of detection as clean as possible from moving objects (grass, branches), and ones that will reflect flare from the illumination system, & not into sunrise or sunset.

    Just set up my S3. Your tutorial certainly helped. I was wondering what firmware version you have and have ever updated? My firmware version doesn’t match the list on the meidase website.

    • @randyb964
      @randyb964 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the cam works fine, I probably wouldn't worry about updating it. My firmware is probably out of date by now, but as long as it works I probably won't update again. They don't seem to make huge changes in the firmware.
