Kawasaki Versys-X 300 with a Passenger. Can it go 2-Up across Alberta Ranchland?
The Kawasaki Versys-X 300 is a capable small adventure bike that does manage a passenger on nearly any road. One of the main advantages of this bike is that it is very light which inspires confidence even in trickier terrain. With new small weight Adventure bikes by Royal Enfield and CF Moto, Kawasaki is missing an opportunity to compete with it's Ninja 400 engine in an improved Versys platform.

A Simple Hormone Test That Goes A Long Way
I am looking to get my first bike this year (I am 45). And after realizing that starting with a heavier, more expensive bike (like Kawasaki W800) it probably not the best idea because in the learing process the bike will most likely get dropped. I am now looking at lighter second hand bike to learn the basics. And funny enough - I am stuck between a lightweigt ADV (The Versys 300 is the best candidate IMO) and a smaller classical-style bike (RE Metero 350). Obviusly 2 completely different bikes. I myself am curios what I will end up buying in a few months when the winter passes and I will get some driving classes (I drove last time 25 years ago when I did my license).
If part availability is not a problem, the CF Moto MT 450 might be even the best option that's available now?
@ that bikes cost about as much as a used W800 in a decent shape. But it is apparently a great machine.
This video is basically a reference to the bike. Thank you for sharing all the details!
Honestly.. The only thing i do not like is i have a annoying buzz .. vibration in throttle jand....yes i di have grip monkeys... i ride very soft hand.. i added 1 inch bar riser an am gonna try rubber spacers... Its not much of vibe. My other more experirned friends ride it...says it hardly much.. i think cause i have a plate in this fore arm..shattered it an thumb... yes on a cycle..😂. That may be why buzz buggs me more.. Any other tricks let me know..rox makes antivibe 2 in riser.. but cables not long enough an didnt want go to that extent yet..my 1 in riser i love..just re routed cables works great..with 1 in peg lowers also= 2 in more..both cheap an very comfy standing now... ❤

Try to wear bicycle shorts, the type with gel insert in the crotch they really well.
People say that a 300 is too small
That's what they say well this video shuts that down.
Hi, you should do a ride down to Waterton as it is so beautiful down there. Take care!
thanks so much for this review, it is so complete, it helps me make a decision about buying it. thanks a lot
Thank you so much for your insight!!! It was so much fun to watch and listen to you two. Ride safe!!
You too!
The rear brake sensor is adjustable. If so happy with the bike why change? I'm riding my until the wheels fall off
I can't believe I didn't know that the rear brake sensor was adjustable!! I actually just got it adjusted so it works perfectly now...Yes, it's a great little bike but I need another bike as my son is going to take over the Versys X 300.
My first bike was a Ducati Monster 620. I have a KLR. But my Versys 300 is my absolute favorite bike.
Get bike. Take off Praxis(hit) chainset. Put in bin. Fit Shimano👍
I Have a Giant Fathom of 2017 vintage - All the so-called experts and experienced riders praise and bitch about various bikes - The difference between a 1 and 2 model and different years etc. - Chaps it's the components that make the difference. My Fathom frame is no different from a fathom 2 to a fathom 1. - All manufacturers knock out bikes cheaper with cheaper components, wake up chaps! - I love the frame geometry etc - I upgraded to Shimano XT and a narrow wide tooth chain ring, never a chain drop! now I have an awesome bike! you get what you pay for!
Way to tell them David!
Bravoooo.
Hi, What is the maximum chainring size I can put? I'm planning to put 34T, but I'm wondering if it is going to touch the frame.. Thanks
Oh, that might be too big...I cannot say for sure as I've kept the stock 30T.
What mileage are you at now.? Thanks
37,800Km
Thanks a lot ,i got my fathom1 last month via Bikeleasing from the Company , one problems til now, the left crankarm is losen two times....have to have a look at it, cool bike anyway
I also changed the gearing to a 15-tooth front sprocket to lower the RPM and was my second change I made to my X300 right after installing a center stand.
Hey Richard, as a Versys 300 rider I really enjoy your videos, and what mileage are you at now. Also enjoyed the Mrs. Mountain wave at the end.
wow, what a talented person you are Dr.Mountain
I own a 2018 Versys 1000 and a 2019 Versys X300. I use the Versys 1000 for longer trips with my wife and the X300 for commuting back and forth to work and traveling back roads. The X300 is definitely my favorite ride due to the weight difference. I think my only complaint with the X300 are the front forks bottoming out when going off rode. Like you, I also changed the gearing going with a one tooth bigger on the front sprocket which helped bring down the RPM's on the highway. If I were to replace the X300, I would probably go with the new Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 . It seems that reviews are really good for this bike and the price is right.
Did you have to recalibrate the speedometer when you changed the sprocket?
Hi James, The speedometer was out by about 5% with all stock parts and it still seems to be out by about 5% after the sprocket change. Unfortunately, this seems to be a common problem with multiple manufactures and they all seem to overestimate...some vehicle brands are notorious for this too like my wife's VW Jetta is out by about 8%.
Speedo should be on the front wheel. The only things that are going to affect that are front tire differences and wheelying. Most bikes from the factory overestimate your speed, so they need recalibrated anyway.
@andrewstambaugh240 got it. I know some motorcycles use the front wheel and some have a sensor in the transmission to detect vehicle speed. I wasn't sure which method this motorcycle uses.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with this bike. A very good review.
Thanks for the great little Alberta tour and the wonderful demonstration of the little Versys. It's a great all-rounder that keeps riders engaged with that revvy engine and light weight. I weigh 200 lbs and often take my spouse on rides here in British Columbia. The bike does not falter, taking it all in stride. Thanks also for sharing your thoughts on your next bike. Many of us with this model do wish Kawasaki would put the 400 cc engine in a similar set-up. Having said that, I'm not complaining about the 300... it's my favourite ride. It's fun to wring it out on the faster roads. You'd think it would run out of steam above 8,000 rpm, but its push is just starting in that last third of the range, between 8k and12k. I find that thrilling. You can also ride it sedately if you prefer and it keeps up with traffic just fine. And as you've shown, It's also amazingly capable off-road.
Hey, thanks! Well, enjoy you're little Versys too and safe riding in BC.
I just cannot stand the sound of a sport bike
Well said, work will always be there, take a rest. Lovely sunset, great view. Cheers from Australia.
10/10 video i loved it, when i saw it pop up on my notifications i clicked on it immediately. Thank you so much for making my night so fun and relaxing!
His voice sounds like Dr Jordan Peterson
Wow! Now, if I only had the equivalent of his IQ too!!
Great video, thanks. I bought one of these new in 2017 and can say it was one of the best all round bikes I've owned. It's simply a case of recalibrating your brain to use the full rev range. The reason I sold it was just down to the lack of suitable tyres available. I bought a pair of Anakees and they were so heavy and stiff it completely ruined the lovely lightweight agile feel. The only way to purchase the original IRC's was through Kawasaki but they were prohibitively expensive, such a shame.
Great! I just bought one for when I do some trails in Scotland.
Great bike Would buy again
if the frame is Boost (148mm) wide in the rear axle you need to use a chainring with 3mm offset, if not boost (142mm) wide only, a chainring with 6mm offset is used...
Lot's of excellent, detailed info... thanks!
Great review mate. It's greatly appreciated.
Hi Dr. , Can i know the full specs of your purchase raceface crank. is it 24mm spindle? By any chance you know the BB size? Thank you Sir!!
I'm so sorry, I'm not certain how to be accurate with the dimensions as the local bike shop ended up installing the new cranks...
67 just getting back into this adv riding.. Looked at a ton of top rated entry level. Dr650(actual love it) klr cb500 300honda rally which cant find! ..watch this review an in craigslist next day 300xversys with 960 miles! 2017.. bought it. An sooooooo glad i didnt get anything heavier! For me...now its perfect... dirt n street. If your wondering an looking..im telling ya.. go for lighter bike... so glad i did..
I have a dr650 (w pumper carb and gsxr exhaust) and a ninja 300. It's interesting how opposite both bikes feel. The dr is amazing off-road. It's surprisingly nimble in a stable way. (I've taken it on off-road endurance races). It has huge tractor factor (especially with the minor upgrades), it feels more like an easy to control thruster that just keeps pushing. But despite a significant power advantage, it just isn't as thrilling on road. It feels initially sluggish to flick, then slumps in corners in a weird way. (haven't driven it crazy like a supermoto). It's also hard to go under 35mph, because you just don't feel much difference with the torque and lower revs. The ninja (not versus, but same engine) is amazingly flickable, play with it during corners, super stable, smooth - on the street. The high reving engine is so much fun and forgiving as a daily. It's easy to tell how fast you are, because you feel every difference in rpm. Off-road, it feels heavy, front end pushes through corners, and feels like it wants to flop down while cornering in a way that no dirt bike I've ridden feels. It's odd how the behaviors invert. I've taken both on 5hr+ trips. Stock 300 could wish for more power when loaded down w the added wind drag. But it is another and more enjoyable. The dr is enough power and luggage space to have more keep up/passing ability. But it won't thrill up top with its thumper, and vibration is more of an issue. It is more stable due to the significantly longer stance (may not fit some dirt bike hauling spaces).
@@andrewstambaugh240 I did a simple flow threw Divocick ( spelling) exhaust, KN filter an home made airbox mod. with ECU flash, Not my graph but accoring to anothers exatly same mods, boosted 6hp on my 300, Can definitly tell difference. IM not very heavy though 155 ish.. plus some luggage so that helps for sure.. Looking around for some others as well but wieght is my Main thing.
@@bwnco Very nice. A 5% sprocket change is very noticeable, so I imagine a 15-20% power boost is very fun. I am considering doing similar to mine, because the ninja 400 loses a lot of max rpm, and the zx4r is outside what I should responsibly spend. Who'd you get the ecu flash from?
@@andrewstambaugh240 also not certain thats webset address for T13motosports but just do google search.. it come up
Thank you!
Nice hack
I have just bought this bike to my son and on his first ride in the neighborhood the chain fell two times. Today I will call the shop and hopefully they will be able to resolve this. Since I am in EU, idk if I can “contact Praxis” about this.. if I would have to return the bike bcs of this it would be such a pitty… he really likes it
If it is a used bike, it could be that the Praxis front chainring is worn. Also, check to see if the clutch on the rear derailleur is engaged - if it's off, this will cause the chain to fall off often as well.
@@Dr.MountainND Hi, thanks for replying. No, its a brand new bike (although was sitting in the store for a while I guess since its 2022 model year). I will check this things, thnx
in the end it was just the clutch position. Great bike !

Great talk-through. Enjoyed this. Going to get this bike soon, I think.
Very nice video thanks for sharing
7:35 what’s with all these amateurs changing sprockets always, you think you know better than Kawasaki how to set up a bike now?
That's right!
What about starting in second?
Great video!
I want a lighter bike. I'm downgrading from my V strom. After many years, the weight has gotten to be a bit much. I am in the study stage. This bike is leading right now.
After 7 years with the Versys-X 300, I'm still not aware of a direct replacement. If you are ok with a Chinese made motorcycle, they seem to be listening to customer requests with their CF Moto and the Kove motorcycles. If Kawasaki ever took their Ninja 400 motor and put it in an adventure platform with the weight not over 410lbs, I'm sure it would sell out quickly - that's what I'm hoping for in 2025!
I think we should get you a turban what do you think it would really match your face
