The system is from VW and has nothing to do with audi. The system was build by VW which creates the machines for building the audi cars. Everything is from VW. When VW bought autounion facilities in ingolstadt back in 1960 there was no such brand as so called audi now. The name for the aquired company comes from the first car of Horh . But the both names has nothing to do with each other . Audi is a rebranded VW meant to attack the more premium class . And that't the bottom line because Adolf.H. sayed so.

@@CrackedPistonsThe Iltis was a development of the Munga, modernized and fitted with a 1.7L VW I4 in place of the old DKW Two-Stroke triple. The Iltis and Quattro don't really share a lot of mechanical similarities but it did provided the inspiration to develop a road going permanent 4wd system. Of course this wasn't the first time a road going AWD system was developed, most notably the Ferguson Formula system from the 1960s, which was successfully used in a Formula 1 car before entering production in the 1966 Jensen FF, plus a number of limited production runs on several Ford models in the UK. Rallyecross guys had also realized the competitive advantages of AWD in the early 1970s and implemented it successfully before AWD was banned from rallycross during the latter half of the 70s.

The regular coupé was a standard front wheel drive (if I remember rightly AWD could be ordered as an extra) and naturally aspirated but the Quattro Coupé ("Urquattro") had definitely a turbocharged 5 cylinder with about 200 horsepowers and of course the signature "fat cheeks". The shorter wheel based "Sportquattro" had 306 horsepower and a hefty price tag. It did cost more than a 911 turbo and wasn't a commercial success at all. But it didn't matter, because it was the base for the soon to come group B monster and of course a unique publicity opportunity to establish the famous subbrand "Quattro" which still is synonymous with high performance Audi cars.

@@CrackedPistons First of all Audi adapted the allwheeldrive system from VW (in this case the Iltis driving performance on slippery surfaces was superior compared to the then current 2WD Audi models), not the other way around. That led to a black project (almost no budget) with some quick and dirty cobbled together AWD Audi Prototypes, these confirmed the projected better performance and then again triggered the decision to create the Audi Quattro Coupé. The Italian word quadro (for four) is written differently, so Quattro is an artificial word creation made by one of the engineers involved in this project.

Too many inaccuracies in the story. You fail to highlight that the fundamental difference between the Iltis and the quattro system is the lack of a center differential in the Iltis. You also fail to mention that the Iltis was developed at the request of the German military who needed a successor for the DKW Munga.

The 325 wasn't really a BMW though, it was part of a german military program for standardized off-road vehicles in the 1930s. Due to a lack of production capabilities by the individual car makers these were built by multiple manufacturers throughout germany. The BMW was part of the "light" series of vehicles which were also built by Stoewer and Hanomag. Each of these were fitted with unique engines and transmissions from their respective manufacturer, meaning the whole standardization thing failed before production even began. The whole Einheits-PKW program was kind of a disaster, overly complex, expensive, unreliable and of course a maintenance nightmare. 🤣
