    I bought a boat that had a Dutchman. Leaving the topping lift attached while sailing kind of chides me, flopping around. The system does work, though. If I only cruised I probably wouldn't be bothered by the always-attached topping lift, especially with less-experienced crew. Racing is a different story, though. Don't want it there. I think I can rig spools for each of the guide lines, at the mast. Bring the topping lift to the mast and allow the spools to play out the guide lines when you don't want the topping lift attached.

    You can produce the exact same effect, with a climbers descendeur which will cost you around £15 quid or $20 US

    G'day. I have an 26 ft roberts. Can the system be modified for smaller boats ?. I am interested as i sail on my owen most of the time. Gerard.

      Hello and thank you for your interest. We are currently working on a somewhat modified version of this boom. Stay tuned for new developments!

    A dry lube to the track and a stackpack would be my preference... but nice of the owner to employ so many people just to make more UNNECESSARY work sailing a very expensive vessel....

    G'day. I live on and sail an 27 ft sailing boat, Mostly on my owen. I have a few questions to ask. 1. Does the dutchman make reefing easy for.an single handed person with no crew on board ?. 2. Can the system be used on any size boat ?. 3. What is the cost, and is it easy to install on your owen ?. I live in Australia New South Wales.

    I think this combined with a strong track from tides marine and a lazy jack system with zipper is like the ultimo single handed system. Jeez. so easy.

    Looks easy in this demo. There needed to be some explanation about what was keeping the control lines vertical. Saw a line beside the topping lift that had some kind of fixings along the length for the vertical control lines attachment, but it was almost ignored in the discussion. I'll be keeping my lazy jacks for the life of my current mainsail, I guess.

    We have had the Dutchman system on our Hanse 575 since we bought it in 2015. Works really nicely and we almost always sail with a crew of two.

    Please show use the Dutchman system in use on windy days. I also noticed the mainsail here looked to have no batons. So perhaps you should make a new video with a full baton sail reefing in windy conditions (that’s when you reef anyway) and we can then judge the performance in real life conditions. As for now I’m doubtful it’s a good as manufactured claims.

    i had the Duchman on my previous 34 foot sloop and it worked great. My new ( to me ) boat a 38 feet sloop came with lazy jacks and they do not work nearly as well. Main ends up on the deck even in calm weather. Great system.

    Hi, i am interested in the Dutchman system and potentially wanna buy one, so appreciate your insights….. how and where are they attached to, and how many run down? in your video it looks like there are 4 lines running down? are they going up straight from the boom, and then they are attached to the backstay? is there wear and tear on the lines when you hoist and lower the Main? i guess when youre away from the boat, you keep them in place. but how´s about over wintertime (well, we have a summerseason only here in Europe :) which is good for sailing, Winter is not so much fun so most boats go out of the water….)? Are they hard to install properly? thank you! M

      @dutchmartv8480 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The system uses vertical control lines, in this case 4, that are attached to the topping lift. The lines go into fabric tabs at the foot of the sail. The sail slides up and down on the lines like a Roman shade. As you drop the sail, the lines guide the main down to alternate sides of the boom. There is not much wear and tear on the lines. They are UV coated and will last a few years. When you raise the sail, the fabric tabs sewn to the foot of the sail stand up, lessening the tension on the control lines. When you remove the sail for winter, the system stays on the sail. The system takes only a couple of hours to install.

      @@dutchmartv8480 thanks, makes sense. now, as you say, on the top side the control lines are fixed to the topping lift? so depending how high or low you have your boom, the control lines are more or less tight. does it mean the horizontal level of the boom plays a major role when setting and lowering the main? I mean, if the boom is 10cm higher or lower, that then means the control lines are more or less tight, right?

    • @dutchmartv8480
      @dutchmartv8480 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the controls will tighten or loosen when the boom is lifted or lowered. With a halyard topping lift, when possible, tension the topping lift and raise the boom as needed before dropping the sail. If a boom topping lift, raise the boom after the sail is dropped. This makes the control lines tighter as the sail is dropped, and system will work better.

    I would turn that forward reef line shackle around 180 degrees or use a different style fastener to prevent chaffing on your sail. Good video Thanks

    Dit vind ik echt een gaaf idee. Echt een verbetering tov de Hoyt boom, die het mijns inziens mogelijk maakt de boot meer te zeilen vanuit de "think as one" gedachte. (Het tuig is één "multipart airfoil")

    Is there a difference between Dutchman lines and lazy jacks. Thanks

    • @dutchmartv8480
      @dutchmartv8480 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Dutchman System uses vertical control lines laced through nylon fairleads in the sail. They way it works can be compared to a roman shade. The sail can’t get caught on the Dutchman lines as it is raised or lowered. Lazy jacks catch often. Also, there’s no need to head into the wind to raise, lower, or reef the sail. Just let the sail luff. The Dutchman lines pass through the fairleads in the sail every 2 to 3 feet, so they can’t chafe the sail. Easier to use. And easier on your sails. I hope this helps.
