My grandfather was a slave. He was rounded up, imprisoned and forced to work. He is Polish. This was during WW2. He survived that, became an alcoholic and was violent towards his wife and daughter. My mother, in turn, inflicted her trauma on me. Has that affected me? Yes Would I go to the German government and demand money and an apology? No. And that's more recent! My grandfathers life experience, although it affects me today, does not define me.

This is not about resolving hurt feelings, because the bulk of white people have already acknowledged the wrongs, changed the laws to reflect that realization, and not committed further acts of the same sort. And the questions still stands, “When does the apologizing end?” Not only have my ancestors not bought or sold slaves (I’ve actively researched my family history to determine this), but my ancestors moved to Kansas because it was a free state, risked their lives fighting on the side of the Union to end slavery, worked in the Civil Rights Movement, never discriminated in our personal lives, never used race as a determining metric for friendship or love, and even worked to end racism overseas by boycotting and marching against Apartheid in South Africa, and then further helping there to create integrated civil society in the country after that system fell, and I consciously speak out against racism wherever I encounter it. So what debt - precisely - am I to pay? I just recounted some 400 years of my own family history. I fully acknowledge that the color of my skin affords me with some very idiotic presumptions of “goodness” and privilege, but I also have no direct control over other’s behavior, either for or against me, because of my race. So after knowing all that, if you’re still approaching someone like myself, and demanding apologies for hurts we never committed, and in fact think are abhorrent, you’re not interested in an apology, you’re attempting to enact some small measure of revenge.
