Dr Heather Collins 'persuaded to pay £6,000 for new front and back doors
But all she wanted was the front door handle at Essex home fixed
Double glazers Zenith Staybrite Ltd are conducting internal investigation A son has accused a double-glazing company of 'preying on the elderly' after he discovered his vulnerable mum had been sold two doors for nearly £6,000 when all she needed was a £50 handle.
Dominic MacMahon claimed double-glazing company Zenith Staybrite Ltd had taken advantage of his 81-year-old mother Dr Heather Collins.
Dr Collins was cold-called by the the company on Monday evening and told the rep the handle on her front door was loose and needed fixing.
The following day a salesman arrived and spent about two-and-a-half hours with the widow, who gets confused about what day of the week it is and needs the support of three part time carers so she can live independently.
The day after the sale, Mr MacMahon confronted the Zenith Staybrite Ltd salesman and filmed the encounter, left and right, before posting it to Facebook where it went viral
Dr Collins, a grandmother of two, was persuaded to hand over a cheque for an eye-watering £5,743.73 for a new front door and backdoor which Mr MacMahon says were simply 'not needed'.
The insurance broker from Colchester, Essex, returned the following day and filmed the salesman who was back at the retired GP's home.
He can be seen confronting the salesman - who is sat in Dr Collins' front room - who claims he was unaware the pensioner was suffering from dementia-like symptoms.
Mr MacMahon puts a string of questions to the rep who denies any wrongdoing.
The company confirmed this afternoon that an internal investigation had been launched but refused to comment any further.
The five-and-a-half minutes of footage was posted to Facebook just yesterday but has already been viewed more than 250,000 times with many left fuming by what they have seen.

Mr MacMahon, 50, has called for tighter controls on companies and charities who he claims take advantage of elderly and vulnerable members of the public.
Speaking this morning from his mother's home, also in Colchester, he said: 'I needed to emphasise to people what this man had done.
'I was very angry but by being able to put the footage online and tell other people what is going on makes more of a difference.
'This is one case - how many other people are going through this? People who don't have anybody to look after them like mother does.
'What we are hoping to do is make sure other vulnerable people are protected from this type of sale.'
He slammed the salesman for concluding the deal with Dr Collins - who lives alone and is easily confused about who people are and what they might be doing in her home.
He said: 'The salesman's behaviour is unbelievable - how can you treat another human being that way? How can he look himself in the face after he does that to a vulnerable old lady.
'As my mum was writing out that cheque for nearly £6,000, what was going through his head? Did he think this was the right thing to do?
'It's not sales - it's preying on older people and it's not acceptable in our society.
'Mum struggles with time and quantity - she has no idea what the implications of signing a cheque for £6,000 are.
'She actually thought she had bought two door handles for nearly £6,000
'If that money had gone - it would have directly compromised her ability to pay for her own carers.'

My mum had dementia, he would of been going straight to hospital and that is a fact.
The only thing the son did was wrong, was not putting him on his arse we need more people like you sir ❤
I used to work for them, they sold an old lady a door for £6k off of my work and gave me £30. I quit immediately
This is not as it seems - the guy didn't even get a chance to defend himself HOWEVER he didn't do himself any favours by not sticking up for himself.
Wait so, ‘ my mom has dementia ‘ …. ‘ my mom said you said this and pressured her ‘ Just saying. And he didn’t let him explain anything, instead he just shouted over him
Sorry but £6k is her entire savings, at 81?
Tbf did he do anything illegal? He didn’t steal, he done a job and overpriced it, isn’t that more her fault tho…. Ik she’s got issues but this happens all the time to young customers too
Oh I didn’t know he didn’t fit the job prior to getting paid
A pvcu door that my dad fits costs around £1200-2000 for a customer lol They are the best of the best doors aswell
He is lower than a snakes belly .
The sales man and his company should be ashamed of themselves😡
I wonder if this salesman regrets what he's done still to this day if he's still living?
Well done to the son
Straight swinging if thats my mum. Cunt
Southern Electric preyed on my late mother in law, who had dementia, a few years back. Told her that her electrics were unsafe and a fire risk etc. Quoted her £1.5k + for a £350 job. She told us and so we cancelled it and the cheque. They still came along and did the job, so I called them out and threatened legal action, local and national press etc. They were terror-stricken and we got the job for nothing. Scum preying on the vulnerable.
The real thieves wear suits
True
If he was selling her something she needed for couple hundred pound that’s fine but this is straight up robbery
£6k door? Better come with £5,500 cashback
Scum bag salesman
Evil this man
Class A acting 🎭
Hopefully they can get the money back.

Do you thank your fake ‘god’ for the scumbag salesman too? 🤣🤣🤣
i thought it was just going to be a case of her son coming round and threatening him but this looks like he was actually doing his job
Scumbag
Imagine all the older people who get taken advantage of like this every single day and nobody to defend them
This dude couldn’t look like a seedier salesman if he tried
What an absolute Runt, words fail me. Good on you for showing this disgusting human for what he is. Sadly just one of many.
I use to work for a life insurance company and after the assistant manager signed up a confused elderly women a policy more expensive than the one she already had He high fived the main manager who said a sales a sale. Left after that.
6k for a door? Can it make me breakfast? Fuck off
This breaks my heart. I hope he lost his job
The amount of companies trying to scam customers is on the rise. The lack of trust and professionalism is shocking. Never pay a company by cash because they will always at a later date claim they have never got it and give u a bill for way more than u ever owed them. Henry colbeck, retail suppliers, thomsons removals and arnold clark.
Turn the camera off bosh
Thank God her Son was able to be there for her. Sickening that salespeople can’t draw a line between morally right and clearly wrong.
Zenith. Say no more
scum
Scumbags
I’d of got short term Alzheimer’s if that had been my mum, I wouldn’t even remember how he fell through the window.
There ain’t a phone 🙄
Scum bags,
Just checking the comments to see if someone has somehow found a way to blame immigrants for this.
I've got to deal with one of these creeps In the next few days 15 grand for an extension that wasn't built just 4 brick walls stay tuned for out come .I wish I. Could take my man for back up 😊
What a scumbag 😡
These type must have grown in a Petra dish in a laboratory heart less bar. Stool. Any one who know this thing should be very careful of him if he could do this to a vulnerable lady while in her home drinking a cup of tea A full blown low life scummy git
Disgusting. So unethical it is not even real.
Nasty man
