I've just uploaded the next episode of the series for friday tommorow. Been a challenge but im loving doing the research
Thanks so much for your in depth information concerning the electrification of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Cannot wait for your next videos. Thanks again
Appreciate that! I'm gonna be talking about the New york Central Third Rail coming out this friday. Its been really hard just getting photos and information about the electrics just by the nature of them being quite old and there wasn't alot written about them.
CP rebuilt many of their SD9043 into SD70ACe- your tuscan and grey unit.
I love the new rebuilds alot, i'm quite tempted to get the new heritage locos especially dday one since my great grandfather was one of the troops liberating europe
Yes, The last few releases from Athearn are really good locos- Dash 9, GP9. i have removed the sugar cube speakers and replaced with Scale Sound Speakers for much better quality sound.
How do the scalesound speakers compare, ive seen people rave about them. But ive been loving the athearn stuff
@@Reaper1770 i have tried iphone 4 , ESU50348 and Scale Sound speakers. I have 2 Athearn Dash 9s and put a ESU in one and a Scale Sound in the other to compare. Scale Sound had more range, and depth of sound, and sounded just that bit better. I have put them in Alcos, EMD and GE models. A mate has put them in models different to mine and they do sound good. I like that each speaker is unique for each loco model, and really easy to swap over and install. They work well with Tsunami 2, WOW 4 and Lok Sound 4 and 5 but like those other speakers not so with older sound chips. I like good sound and find the sugar cubes are like the old black oval speakers. Having said that I have a Rapido M420 with ESU 5 and sugar cube speakers that sounds good so no need to change. The speakers cost $17 USD plus postage from Scale Sound Systems.
Interesting i've been sound chipping a few locos and always heard good things about the scale sounds system. Might get a few speaker sets for some of my older broadway limited and my new SD70s
Did you paid more in Australian dollars for the CP Rail SD9043MAC?
Well i bought it from Lombard hobbies and its alot cheaper than buying it from local shops here in australia I would be paying 300usd for my 90mac so i was already hundred bucks ahead even with postage. Buying american trains is rough in australia
Great video. Looking forward to more like it. A lot of info I've never heard along with good explanations on electric power
Well i worked as an electric train driver for a year and a half. Learnt alot and im now trying to be an electrical engineer. Its a way of me teaching myself about concepts of electrical engineering and well As they say if you can't explain it well, you don't understand it well enough. I'm hoping to post one about the New york central third rail this weekend. So look forward to that :)
'Ahh-THERN' not 'A-thern' 18:53: That's the exhaust, not the inlet. Check out Thos R. Lee's 'Turbines Westward,' the seminal book on UP turbine-electrics.
Really i've heard most people actually call it Athearn over that way. Hey thanks for that. I geniunely thought that was the inlet. I do wish it was easier to get railroad books over all since they are just so hard to find even on ebay. Im still generally unfamilar with diesel traction since i only worked on electric traction. So things like intake locations are still a bit fuzzy to me. Appreciate the view though. Would you recommend any other books for the U boats? I'll be doing a review on the u50s and just want to get the history right
3:58 CP 4712 is an M-636
Oh you're right. I can't believe i didn't spot that. Should have checked the trucks. Thanks for that spot. Still wouldn't mind more CP MLW locos
@@Reaper1770 Hey no worries..I'll look at MLW and Alco stuff all day long keep up the good work 👍
Thanks. Well done Mister.
Appreciated. I'm gonna get my new york central video out next and then we get to talk one of my favourite locomotives of all time GG1. Its gonna be a long episode about the GG1 so get ready for that one
Id love to hear some feedback or some thoughts as its my first history focused video
I dont think it needs to have all wheel drive system. It would be interesting to do a pull test & compare that test to other large diesels. The only time you would need all the traction you can get, is when running on a huge club layout, as most home layouts are not big enough to pull more than say, 40 freight cars. I have a Athearn U50 with the same truck arrangement, & on my layout, traction would never be an issue, because it is not big enough to realistcally, pull more than 20 freight cars.Still a nice model of a turbine & would have been good to see it running. Thanks for the vid.
Honestly i think that would be a great video and just to compare some diesels overall. Just gotta find a way to measure it consistently. The reason i harped on a bit about the tractive effort is my future plans for my layout is to have relatively high grades. I live near australia's blue mountains and sometimes the track is close to a 2.5 to 3% grade. So i am trying to add a bit of that steepness to my layout but not to that extreme. So my concerns is stalling or slipping while climbing the hill. Its a beautiful model but just a bit let down by the lighting featurs. Ill make sure to atleast add a bit of footage of the loco running from now on. Thanks for watching and supporting the chanel
I have one of these #64 and the number boards do light up it CV24😮
@@Reaper1770 you can always add more weight. the frame is stiff enough, the inner drive trucks will benefit.
Interesting video sir! I was always under the impression that the older Proto 2000 units were not up to the quality and detail of modern models. I returned to the hobby 13 years ago after retiring from the Army so there’s a gap with many older models. I recently bought a new Rapido SP PA-2 with sound and I knew I’d eventually need to find some B units for it. I looked closer at the Proto 2000 P units and saw that the B units looked pretty good so I bought two Proto 2000 dummy B units for $60 for two of them and they work great.
I find proto 2000 very good as a starter model, there are areas where they lack suck as modern lighting or easy to fit dcc sound. My biggest issue is more so the body fit in the A units just because i've had issues with the chasis falling out of the shell. The B units are just solid i'm using proto 2000 E7B for my PRR Broadway limited consist
I'll be doing Athearn Gas Turbine as this coming tuesday
@@Reaper1770 I’m still taking baby steps with my PA-1/2 inventory and I prefer to stick with SP gray and scarlet so the Proto 2000’s were an easy fit that can mate up with my FP-7’s and the new PIKO KM4000 since they’re all within a similar era of use. My UP turbine selection is one Athearn RTR Viranda, a Scale Trains Big Blow (first run Rivet counter)and a couple other Athearn RTR UP turbines. The thing I found with turbines is that nearly each unit had different features so it can be a pain in the ass sourcing the unique ones, this month I’m targeting a UP #54 turbine at around $230-$255. Trainz has had some good inventory lately so each month there’s something new to tempt me, lol. Currently I bought a couple used Athearn RTR SP GP-40X’s w/ sound for $330 for the pair so I’m content for the moment, lol. I also love the U50, DD-35, DDA-40X and U50C so I own a couple of U50’s and DDA-40X’s, for some reason I’m able to score good prices on second hand units since who wants to pay $550 for one with sound.
Thank you very much for the fine review, hope the shipping prices aren’t too harsh for you. Here in the US the newer RTR units are well received and nobody notices that it’s not a Genesis version unless they get a magnifying glass. And I don’t have an answer for you about the silver paint on the classification lights. As a rule of thumb, if the locomotive still has the full SP light package then the classification lights are often still used.
I managed to get this off for a very good price at a second hand store in australia. Generally speaking i find the prices from trainworld or lombard alot cheaper than if i bought it from an australian store unless the shipping is just silly. Ive just bought a couple of locomotives from lombard a set of CP rail sd70 and sd90. And i bought an ep5 from trainworld. I think it'll be an interesting topic to discuss which one is a better store overall. I find the gap between RTR and genesis narrowing these days. My issue is more so with genesis not having my desired features like seperate lighting and metal couplers. If they could do that i'd feel less annoyed by the genesis line up. I don't really care about functioning fans but i do care about lit numberboards and working stratalights
@@Reaper1770 here in the States not many use Lombard but I have in the recent past, they had the best price for the PIKO diesel-hydraulic. eBay can be insane on shipping prices and I wonder what drugs they’re using when they posted the listing.
Proto has road specific lighting.
Yes but not for all models from what i've found. I know the P2K Alco PAs are road specific but i haven't seen any early proto 2000 with the SP light cluster
I mean, it's a nice unit as a trailing engine, but no ditch lights, no cab interior (even if it is a basic setup molding), it's pretty much either a filler or a no-go for my taste! Good for beginners; great for a serious kitbashing project!
on the newer ones they come with ditch lights so i'm happy they made that improvement, overall i think as a beginner locomotive it's a pretty solid locomotive especially for a 130 bucks. i'm going to use this as a filler till i get a scaletrains or genesis model and then it'll get moved towards being a trailing. i think it has potential for a kitbash just for how much room there is in the shell.
Any Intermountain hopper car are difficult and a pain to build. The instructions are not the best either
It sucks though, recently there was a big batch of intermountain kits at a super good price and i was so tempted. Then i remembered how much of a misery of just building the hopper car was. It just made me want to avoid the kits from now on. However bowser and accurail has been super solid and haven't been the equalivent of slamming my head into a wall like this kit was
@@Reaper1770 Walthers make a good model of the cylindrical hopper car and a complete intermountain are good as well. Have many on our Canadian exhibition layout.
I've got the walthers one for a pretty good price and it was simply really good. Im hoping to get some of the rainbow hoppers since i got a CP rail one. Im curious to see if the rapido ones as good as the price suggest. Their locos are solid in terms of features so hopping their wagons are the same
Lol, I've never had athearn paint wipe off. Numbers, or anything. Odd.
Honestly this is the only athearn that i've had it happen to, either the previous owner had sandpaper for fingers or factory just had a bad day. Saying that i have noticed the white paint in general is more prone to flaking off. Still love my locomotive though and ive got a couple of scale trains tunnel motors on preorder. Thats like the only reason why i haven't bought more of these.
Correction on my SD45T-2 has the flaked white paint
@@Reaper1770 I understand. If you can name the bad instance with these engines, I've probably seen it. First on paint, but they make goofs here and there. Usually in glueing. I've had steps behind cab knocked off, snow plow, horn, you name it. USPS has made me say a few more 4 lettered words than I want to. God help you if you have handrails break with the double stantions. Couldn't find them, not even with athearns help.
Im hoping on my new genesis 90 and 70acu im hoping its close to perfect since i really would hate to send them back to america
@@Reaper1770oh lord, I failed to consider your location when buying North American railroad models. I model the SP and UP (SP is my primary love) and thankfully, there’s a LOT of unique prototypes that make for a good selection of unique models such as the Cab Forwards and Gas Turbine locomotives. I bought one of Scale Trains first run Big Blow unit number 5 but I should’ve went for the version that had the roof mounted air filter but I’m proud of what I have. I’m guessing you live in the UK so this might interest you, PIKO released the SP KM4000 diesel-Hydraulics just over a year ago and if you’re aware of that experiment, they were to a degree, a typical German locomotive and the PIKO release here in the US wasn’t widely known so it was a shock that someone finally produced a nice model and with sound! The shade of SP gray that PIKO uses is not quite correct as it has a more bluish hue to it but it’s within tolerance.

I remember when the Kato SD40 was first released (all the way back in 1990-skmething) it was noteworthy for a couple of reasons. One being that it was the first production plastic model to with an MSRP in excess of $100. Another was for being the only option for a relatively affordable, decent quality (excellent quality actually) SD40. Yes; there was the AHM/Mehani/IHC/Model Power SD40, but that was a toy and would need a lot of work just to make it look good. You could try kitbashing an Athearn or GSB (remember them?) SD40-2, but that' would have been quite the project. Of course if you had the means, you could just buy brass. Going back even further, there was an article in RMC, I believe, on how to kitbash one from an Athearn SDP 40, but the main issue was the hood width as this model was a 60's era model with the wide bodies. The Kato model was not perfect, but they were ahead of Athearn blue box models. This also was an era where models were not manufactured with road specific details.
I think my biggest grievance with kato is just how expensive they are still. Like for such an old model, its still quite expensive. I think thats my biggest problem with them in general, for some bizarre reason. On ebay kato is priced the same as Athearn genesis. If they were closer in pricing to Athearn RTR, i'd be pretty happy with them. For some reason in nearly 3 decades we haven't really had a defintive SD40 unlike lets say a SD45. I'll still have to try out a proper brass model since these days, its not a bad way to get a good model for a cheaper price if you're willing to put in the work.
Thinking about it i'd love to see scaletrains make an SD40 or a nice athearn genesis sd40
That is really cool. Will give it a try. Thanks!
Hey thanks for that. Love your videos too by the way. I got the idea from people doing mustangs and spitfires actually
❤ loving it
You do know that Kato produced HO scale straight SD40's were produced roughly 15 years ago or so when railroad specific details and factory applied grab irons weren't the thing they have become. Kato doesn't even list the SD40 on the website anymore just the SD40-2 mid.
Oh i know. I know these aren't brand new kit's and these are quite old. Usually i'm comparing them to things such as the earlier proto 2000 sd45s from the same time period which for some reason hasn't really had the second hand mark up in prices. Where i live kato is pretty expensive on ebay, asking almost 240 to 280 aud and for some strange reason priced almost similar to athearn genesis locos. In australia for an extra 20 to 30 bucks you could get a genesis SD40M-2. The kato locos are very good but do fall behind in alot of ways to the proto 2000 as an overall package today. The proto 2000s i have such as the sd7 and the sd45 do have better detail and factory applied grab irons and ladders. Prehaps i was a bit too harsh in the video but overall its like a thing that really bugs me about the CP rail SD40
Hey thank you for the feedback though. I do appreciate it. Though it had made me realise that there isn't alot of SD40s on the market for such a popular model

Hey guys, just wanted to get some opinions of if you guys wanted more australian content such as reviews and trips around NSW. I'll be releasing another first impressions video soo
Nice Vid, I have the p2k in prr and it doesnt have the trainphone, still a solid unit for its age. The 5 stripe over the portholes is actually accurate, there are pictures but its less common in later shots. i'm guessing some were removed in the mid 50s and some didnt have them for long after delivery, hard to tell because I believe it varied from unit to unit. the rapido ones are nice and expensive asl but after 2 runs, they still haven't done nyc's lightning stripe scheme you show here. but "next run" they say lol. Some more brand options would be refreshing too, it would be cool if athearn kitbashed their highliners f unit shell tooling into e8s like they did for their fp7. i think that would be a solid competitor for the best on the market, especially those nose contours and windows being pretty much perfectly shaped imo. As for some of those grab irons, they're both missing the 2 "ladder rest" grab irons that would be at the top corners of the nose, easy fix with some cal scale ones. the full nose ladders woudn't be added till the late 50s into the 60+, so thats good enough for me. enjoyable watch, keep it up man!
mb for the yap sesh
Hey thanks for letting me know about the PRR port hole thing. I just searched up my E8 on railarchives and it has the portholes clear. I think the proto 2000 are still very good but i think if theres a chance to buy the broadway or the later walthers runs you want for a bit more, i'd recommend them just because its less tedious to fit DCC and sound. The NYC was just a nightmare to fit with sound. Agreed for the price of the rapido, i'm just not seeing the big advantage over a BLI or a P2K
Its good to know i can buy the extra grab irons though but i would love to see athearn do an E series loco like a EA or E6
I have always wondered about the RR Kits because I do a lot of Scale modelling. How do you think they compare to say Airfix and Tamiya etc? Quality, difficulty of build? I have never done any proper brick work outside of rubble for dioramas. Thanks again.
I find the quality of plastic above airfix and on par with trumpter, takom or meng. While its nothing complicated, my only real critism of this build is a lack of interior detail and that there was a lack of instructions of where the decals go. Now the decal instruction would be helpful across the board as even kits like their coaches lack instructions on where the numbers go. The instructions arent complicated but do lack that detail when it comes to paints aswell so no colour guides to it either
The follow up to this video is me building it. Hope you love it and im looking forward to weathering it :) th-cam.com/video/tgjSMd7_gGI/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/nJZaPfLlnfQ/w-d-xo.html just wanted to add that i have done a build video of this kit and overall i think it was a good experience but there were a few tiny issues i did have
Looks real good
Cherry Coke man!
Hope to see more from you
Very Cool!
Hey guys just wanted to add something important which was one difference between the earlier santa fe & GN batch to the later BN is the position of the headlights. On the earlier ones the headlights were fitted in between number boards while the later which i have on my layout has them on the front of the safety cab
