The teak decks on Orla are now 32 years old and long over due for some TLC. First job was to remove all the interior head lining and then all through deck fittings, everything that was possible to remove was. This video shows the initial sanding, more to follow....

My question is, what did you screw your wooden guide to? I love that idea but curious as to how to you fasted it. I assume the remaining teak in the old grooves?

    I've watched your whole series on your deck refurbishment now and thank you so much for posting. I have a question about the deck screws. Did you ever replace the screws with shorter ones after cleaning and deepening the screw holes or did you simply rely on the adhesive under the decks to keep them in place? If so, are you concerned they will de-laminate in the future? Thanks.

    • @yachtorla7691
      @yachtorla7691 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, thanks for your comments. I did replace all the deck screws I removed, more for peace of mind than anything else, the teak deck is so well secured with the adhesive I don't think it will ever de-laminate. I did remove all the decking round my gas lockers at the aft end, I was installing larger gas lockers so it all had to be cut away and it was very difficult to lift and remove, so I guess that gave me confidence in the adhesive on the rest of the deck. I don't know what adhesive was used 35 years ago but it still has a good hold :) Cheers Dougie

    Aaaahh... Finally found someone as crazy as I am about Teak and quality work... Thank you... I am not alone. I also used and following the same regiment as you -- only, I found the Reefing hook and sanding block from TDS much faster than using the the Fein tool. It's all personal preference in the end--- I am very much under time constraint to weekends and distance. Otherwise-- I envy the time and care you are putty into your girl!! 😎

      @yachtorla7691 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Thomas, I thought I was mad for undertaking this work for a while, but now its complete I'm delighted. I ended up not using the Fein tool for cleaning the grooves, made myself a similar sanding block, never tried the reefing hook, didn't know it existed until I was almost done :) I was the same as yourself with Orla being 250 miles from home, but the staff at the yard allowed me to stay on the boat which meant I could spend a few weeks at a time on her between trying to earn a living :)

  • @syexplorarconmigo8853
    @syexplorarconmigo8853 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great and simple vids Dougie! The only difference was that I blew in thick beads and made sure they touched every single side and did it slow with a helper going behind me for quality control. My boat is in the water at the moment -- so I do not have the luxury of the indoor area. I do have the decks tarped to ensure moisture levels stay below 8%... I am noticing the recessed caulking when you flatten the caulking-- it "appears" lower than the surface of the wood. Is this an optical illusion-- or is the caulking actually lower than the grain of the battens? Cheers, Thomas S/Y EXPLORAR CONMIGO

    • @yachtorla7691
      @yachtorla7691 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the Comments Thomas. The indoor option was a must for me, I had many other jobs to get done also, don't think I would have managed it outdoors with the drop in temperature and wet winters we get.. I had a couple of small areas where the caulking was recessed, couldn't really figure out why it was happening, maybe the angle I held the plastic scraper I used for pressing it in, not sure. By the time I did the final sand it was fine, it looks worse in the video. On a couple of runs I put another bead on top once the first had cured, sanded it off and perfect :) Cheers Doug

    Absolutely superb series of video tutorials. I have a complete deck to renovate on my 36foot motor cruiser with pretty much all of the issues you have covered, including many wafer thin or missing screw plugs. You have inspired and informed me to go for it rather than rip it all off and replace with plastic faux teak decking (which was my original plan). Thank-you for taking the time and detail to share your experience and skill. One question: Did you use epoxy or polyester resin to bed your screw plugs? I have some West system 105/205, but am wondering if UV exposure would break this down and cause the bond to fail.

I have asked questions on forums and a couple of very helpful local boat builders were on hand to give advice when necessary. So I decided to make these video's in the hope others would benefit from my learnings. As far as craftsman is concerned :) I'm just a proud boat owner who likes to do all his own maintenance... Hello Jon and Yacht Orla, I am about to start the restoration of Vindo 40 deck, I am about to take out old rusty screws and I am not sure if replace them by INOX with Sika for sealing and then bug over it with glue or just do not replace the screw and just the bug with sika, epoxy or other material... What do you recomend? I am having water inside from the deck and my plan is first the secrews and second replace Caulking, third sanding and fourth teak oil.

      Germán Ramajo Aráez Hello German. I followed Yacht Orla s video, and took out the screws and cleaned out the plug holes of old glue. I could re-use most of my screws. I put the screws in again, one tiny drop epoxy, dipped the plug in epoxy, and did just like in the video. your plan with screws, caulking and sanding, was just like the order I did it in. Hope I was helpfull, and good luck on your restoration. For the caulking I used Sikaflex7, and for the holes and plugs I used a 2 component clear epoxy from west system. Best wishes. jon

    • @yachtorla7691
      @yachtorla7691 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Warren, I looked into taping the seams prior to caulking, but it would be a huge amount of work and a lot of detail to mask round, also incredibly messy when removing the tape. The very first sanding i did when when she came in the shed was just a lightish sand to give me a workable surface for changing plugs and re-cutting the seams, I always new I would have to do another sanding nearer the end of the project, and to be honest a lot of the sanding you see is just removing the excess caulk, for sure more teak was sanded off but that was always going to be the case. Also most of the excess caulk was removed with the Multimaster blade, so sanding was just a minimum. If I had taped it I think I would still of had to sand. If I was doing it again I would do it the same way :) You will see in the next video that I used tape for the seams round the coach roof which was a must. I am planning to do more videos on Orla's maintenance, I have new perspex to install in the coachroof and all the deck fittings to re-bed, so a few more to come yet. Thanks Dougie

      +Cresdragon Hi Cresdragon, if you look at Orla teak deck renovation pt 2 you'll see why it had to be done. The only bungs that were replaced were the ones where the teak was gone completely, only the resin above the screw being visible, I reckon I've replaced about 40%. The initial sanding of the decks exposed the bungs that were starting to thin out. Like you said most of the bungs have still plenty left.

The 1st sanding was 80grit, the decks were really bad. Regards the bungs & screws, in hindsight I would probably not use srews again unless I seen signs of lifting, Orla's decks are so secure I don't think the screws would do any good now.. By far the best thing I did having never done anything like this before, was get the right tools, can't stress it strongly enough. Really good quality Random Orbital Sander. Fein Multimaster with all the right attachments, good battery drill, a palm router with plunger and lastly a good hoover that will plug into your sander. At a guess I spent around £700 on tools, bargain. I was getting quotes off £40'000 to do what I'm doing myself, Its a lot of work, but I have learnt new skills and got a huge amount of satisfaction out of it. Good luck with your project, I'm still doing mine, should be ready to start caulking soon :) Dougie

      +Yacht Orla... Yes the Fein, I bought one too when I re caulked the coach roof, expensive but what a bargain for time and effort.... I watched the last of your clips with the router, now that looks like a pain in the A, possibly the worse job and time consuming of it all.??? Is there no other way to deepen the tracks where the caulk goes.? Great series, hope to see more.. Warren

      +legend343 Re-routing the grooves so they are all the same depth and width was the one job I was dreading, I spent a lot of time looking into other tools and asking the pro's and it basically came down to what I'm doing. It is quite daunting at first, but you soon get into a system that works. The big areas are not to bad its the areas round hatches and deck fitting which slow the whole thing down. Its still very easy to make a mistake with the router as I have found :( but all fixable) takes a surprising amount of concentration. Hoping to get back to Orla in the next few weeks when I hope to finish the routing and start cleaning the grooves ready for caulking......

    Thanks, for shearing your experience. Very helpful since I'll be starting the teak revitalization next month on my newly bought Trintella IV. I have a question about the mounting screws - did you put new ones after cleaning the holes or did you just put the plugs without the screws?

      +Maciej Mikulski Hello, nice strong boat the Trintella, make a good liveaboard, always liked them... I debated about replacing the screws because the deck is so well attached, but for all the cost involved I decided to replace them with SS pan heads. At least I know they are there :) When I started the work on my deck, the best thing I did was get the right tools, made a huge differance. No regrets spending the money on a good orbital sander and the Fein Multimaster. Good luck with your decks. Dougie

      +Yacht Orla Thanks for the answer and yeah I agree on the tools - this is the basis. Have you also replaced the caulk sealing between the planks, or have you just "shaved" the caulk that was standing above the planks?

      +Maciej Mikulski Hello again, I shaved the exess caulking prior to the first sanding, it made sanding much easier. I then removed all the exposed screws and re-drilled, re-screwed & re-plugged. The job I'm doing now is removing all the old caulking ( just posted video pt 5 about this) and routing out the grooves again. After that I will caulk the whole deck and then a final sanding, cant wait, almost there :) Cheers Dougie

      I did so enjoy the vid. I have to say the epoxy is a bad idea, fills the screw philips head, a real bitch to get out. The music, just fantastic. great job folks, thanks

    Oh man, I just figured out "cut towards the cheese" is implying to cut towards the fat end of your wedge of "cheese". With cheese being the dowel.

      +Benjamin Hampton Hi Benjamin, LOL, thats not what I had in mind when I made the video, but I guess its an explanation :) Its really me having a go at my friend Warrren's cheese issues (private joke). Thanks for making me laugh.

      Karen Engmark Hi Keren, Its a FEIN MultiMaster with a 5mm cutting blade attachment, they are very good, I'll be posting a video soon showing the tool in use, had to go to work for a couple off months, but I'll be back to the project soon.
