Our family loves to get outside and explore new places and activities - our biggest draw is overland camping in our 2021 Polaris General 4 - with both of our kids! Overlanding has taken us to all sorts of places we never knew existed, and it's helped us teach our children about resilience, problem solving, self-sufficiency, nature and more. But most of all it's a ton of fun!!!
It doesn't matter if you live in the city or country - we want to help you find ways to get outside with your family too! We love hearing from subscribers who tell us our trips inspired them to get outside. That's what it's all about.
Please go hit that subscribe button and be sure to check out the LinkTree Link above - those are the best ways you can show your support. We add new videos as often as we can - we're normal people with real jobs and adventuring is our hobby. We just like sharing our adventures through our content!

Turning our UTV into a snow plowing BEAST! [Polaris Glacier HD Snowplow Install]
Winter is coming so don't wait til the last minute like we did! In this video, we'll walk you through installing a NEW Polaris Glacier HD Snowplow system on our Polaris General 4 1000.
We did NOT expect the General to be such an awesome plowing machine. We had used our 2-seat Polaris Ranger for years, and figured the 4-seat General would not be easy to plow with because of the larger turning radius. But we were wrong!
The heavier machine and longer wheelbase definitely results in less wheel slip than our Ranger. The Tusk Terrabyte radial tires probably help too, and the new plow is an absolute beast. Much heavier, much more sturdy, easier to take on and off - plus we can now control it from inside the heated, enclosed cab. Bring on winter - we're ready for it!

We're headed into the Uinta Mountains of Utah for five days of UTV overlanding out of our Polaris General. The Uintas are the tallest mountain range in Utah, peaking at over 13,500 feet and are also the only major mountain range in the United States that runs east-west. Our research has shown we should prepare for unpredictable weather, and there are no places to re-supply or re-fuel anywhere i...

Hey man, best side by side hauling video I've seen. Great job! Only thing I do different is i strap at the wheels that way zero compression on the suspension. But the way you tied looks great with just a little suspension compression. If i ever had to tie above whhels id do as your example. Thanks again
Question regarding the front tie down rail on the basket. I’m considering the Gen 2 so I can mount a particle separator on it. It weighs about 10 lbs. is the rail stout enough to support the weight and what is the width of the rail? Would have to drill through and bolt the separator to the rail.
I believe otter to be better than both
Yea I’ve got a 2012 ranger 800 xp I ran the factory belt for ten years too had checked and cleaned the cut with each service but I finally put a new gates belt on it blew up in about a year put the old belt back on tell I got a new Polaris in and put back on. I use mine every day on a farm summer and winter been a good machine. Still have the original belt for back up.
Air comes in from the bottom and goes out from the top. You said it backwards
Different activities
Does one retain heat better than the other? Or warm up quicker than the other?
Hard to say. The Eskimo seems to have a little thicker material… and we prefer to sleep in that one. But can’t say so definitively.
Excellent review, great info. Just bought a 2024 XP ultimate . Watching you change out the primary and secondary clutches actually made it look fairly simple. The dealer definitely told me about the misfire code if you get an hourglass shape in your belt. Learning when to use low gear is very important from what I hear
Thank you! Yes, low gear is your friend! Not hard to smoke a belt if you’re not paying attention!
Awesome adventure, thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing content ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🏆
Appreciate it!
What brand of rock sliders do you have and where did you purchase them? Thanks
Razorback Off-road!
Glad also that you're back. Waiting for some off road stuff!
Trying to get some stuff back out there! We will soon :)
If you can fit it, bring it. Why not? When you're cold, wet, hungry, etc, it just isn't fun, and the object is to have fun, right?
It’s bad enough when cold, wet or hungry…. When some of the other family members are cold, wet and hungry 😬 😂
Out of curiosity, where about in Wi? I'm from Suring. As I'm sure most know in Wi, a lot of blacktop, and in my area, other then blacktop it's Sand. Hard to find a tire for that. Cheers Mike
Sure thing - Oconto County :) We’re half an hour west of Madison, a little outside of Dane County.
Do you use the floor space in front of your kids feet?
Infront of the little ones sometimes, since his feet don’t hit the floor
On the Core tent with a full rain fly, can the windows be kept rolled up during light rain, or do they need to be closed? I'm concerned about ventilation on a warm, rainy day, as I don't want the entire tent covered up.
You can have the inner windows open with the full rain fly. If the rain isn’t too crazy you could unzip the rain fly a bit too for ventilation. I don’t think it would be bad on a warm, rainy day - at least not worse than any other tent.
How do you like the Duraclutch ??
So far so good! Takeoffs are so much smoother than the stock clutch. More engine braking in low too - those are the biggest things I’ve noticed. We don’t have a ton of miles on it but so far, we like it!!
Nice to see you again. I put tusk Terrabites on this summer. I will see how the General plows snow this Winter.
Thanks! Let us know what you think. We made so many changes with the plow, and a totally different machine so hard for us to judge how much difference the tires make alone. We have done some winter trail riding with them… and they seemed to do alright.
I have tried to do most things myself but that’s one I was happy to have them do :-). Glad you got it working. I’m really looking forward to the snow! By the way I love my RBO rack. That presented its own problems getting into that one small access area with my big hands!
Yep! The heater and ride command was a dealer install. A man’s got to know his limitations! I had the same problem on the RBO. I did one and then had my daughter help me with the other. Glad the rack is working for you. It completely changes how you can use your UTV. 👍
Makes me glad I had my dealer do it for me. I’d still be out in the garage :-)
It’s amazing how quickly a 2 hour project can turn into an 8-hour project! Sometimes it’s best to let the pros handle it! 😆
Glad to see you back posting on SXS stuff. Really enjoyed the video
Appreciate it! We had to step away from it over the summer but we’ll be trying to get some videos up a little more often again!
Your like me wait until it snows.
Right? I got it done in time. The kids made it to school! 😂
Great video
Thanks!
are you still plowing with the tusk terrabite tires, how are they for traction in the snow?
Yes. They seem to do well in the snow, certainly good enough for me to be happy with them but it’s hard for me to compare to anything else. Our 2-seat Ranger struggled in heavier deeper snow with the factory bias-ply tires, but that could have been a combination of tires, lighter weight, plow…. The Tusk Megabites have a little more open, aggressive tread design, which might help on soft snow, not sure if it would help or hurt on packed snow or ice. I’d be curious to take a tire sipping tool and add a bunch of mini grooves like a car snow tire, and see if that makes a noticeable difference.
There’s no free lunch. Naked rubber tires, even tracks can’t compare to an aggressive set of tire chains.
I bought these and absolutely love them they are fantastic.
We’ve run several different brands of tires, and these have been our favorite tires for our machine. Really solid all around tire at a pretty reasonable price.
Bummer on the engine, but great job getting off the line.
So close! Next year….
Thanks for visiting my home state. It's a beautiful place with lots of things to do outdoors. Great video
Thanks! Utah has just about everything when it comes to outdoor recreation. Love the state!
This is a great idea, I’ve got a bog standard wood store made from scaffold tubes and boards. the roof is sloped and covered with boards so doesn’t get enough sunlight to dry out the wood as quick as I’d like, I’m definitly gonna take this idea on board for next year.
Awesome! Glad it was helpful!
I noticed the map at the beginning didn't utilize the Cheese Trail to Mineral Point. How do I get a map of your route ??
We ran the Cheese Country trail, at least part of it. That was a debate between my wife and I - so we start at Monroe at the trail head, or start somewhere at the Illinois border? You can guess who won that one 😂 The map is available as a .gpx download on our website Northwoods.family - you can view it on Google maps or on a web program like gpx.studio
I glad your back
Thanks! More coming soon!
Not that the General isn't an awesome vehicle, but with the type of riding your doing, wouldn't the Xpedition ADV be more suited ?
yeah, it would have some advantages. But the Xpedition wasn’t out when we bought the General. We’ve heard some complaints about noise too on the Xpedition. Everything sealed up I guess it’s pretty noisy inside.
This was such a good video. Loved watching this and the Utah overlanding videos. Hope you guys do more of these in the future.
Thanks!!!
I took your route in July, quite a fun time in the ranger. If you ever do it again or want to create a different route with a support ranger lol...let me know Id love to go again.
That’s so cool to hear! We’ve talked about trying to do a ride where a bunch of people who follow the channel meet up. We’ll keep you posted!
Does this unit track your route?
It does
been riding that trail since age 12
Awesome! I’m glad we have it. Hoping they turn more old railroad beds into trails. There’s been talk of it
@TheNorthwoodsFamily yea i have heard that. This trail is well maintained and 3 miles from my house 6 blocks from my cabin in Darlington
I can only think of that little kid with that big ass helmet on and a seatbelt with no Hans device. If you are going to wear a helmet with a seatbelt, you need a Hans device.
We did our own reading and talked with his doctor. We considered installing four point harnesses too. But with the type of riding we do, we assessed the risk of a big frontal impact or rollover was too low to justify using a device that wouldn’t let him turn his head and enjoy the ride. If my kids were racing or we were jumping sand dunes - that’d be a different story. Everyone who drives a car to work should wear a helmet, HANS and install a full roll cage in their car - but we don’t. We mitigate risk to the degree we feel is reasonable. Some people are appalled we take out kids riding at all because they think it’s too dangerous.
Nice video, Adrian. Another nice thing to consider carrying is a heavy duty screw-in type stake (like for a dog cable) that can be used when there are zero trees or anchor points.
That’s a solid idea
This channel should have 500,000 subscribers. Great, quality videos.
Thank you!!! We think so too 😆
There isn't 5 different trails up there is there.
It’s all one connected trail system, but different segments or loops have different characteristics and scenery.
I think you should of run the wires underneath
In hindsight that may have been better 🤷♂️
At least there's a fellow Wisconsin night out enjoying life in their UTV. I'm from up by eau Claire Wisconsin
Awesome! Happy riding! 🧀
Yo I go atving there annually… wait 653 MILES!!!!
Great area to ride!!
And did you guys get up to the witch's cabin with all of the stuff hanging on it. I haven't made it through your whole video but I'm just seeing
I’m not familiar with what you’re talking about. Unless it’s that shack with all the bras hanging off it? 😂 that was right next to where my buddy was stopped
As I'm watching the videos I was out there that same weekend. They don't allow you to do chainsaws because they are reliable for if you get hurt
Roger that!
Have you guys been up here since then? I've stayed at that campground
We passed through on our trip across the state but haven’t been up to ride just that area since
I'm watching your video. We've camped in that campground Snyder campground in Hatfield, Wisconsin. Wonderful campground locally from the general area that you were in. Rode all them trails down there in Black River falls and Rock dam and Wilson Park, Chippewa county and rode all the way up to Superior myself from Rice lake Wisconsin
Awesome! Thanks for all the comments on the videos!!! We’ve stayed at Snyder a couple times and Lake Arbutus. It’s the best trails closest to home. We like going up more towards Rock Dam than Black River Falls. Trails seem to usually be in a little better condition.
When you guys camped in the black hills 2 years ago did you hear or see anything strange?
We had our two kids along. We hear lots of strange things!
I grew up riding that trial when it first opened. I’d ride from Gratiot to South Wayne to my friends farm.
Nice! It’s a great trail to have in our neck of the woods.
We just purchased some Tusk Terrabites I was wondering what tire pressure are you running, we'll be riding in areas of West Virginia
We run the stock pressure recommended by the manufacturer. I think it’s 16 front and 22 rear? Some people feel that’s high but I’ve run lower and I don’t feel the machine handles as well. I think usually the manufacturer knows what they’re doing. On really loose or muddy trails we might air down a bit but we usually haul a lot so we don’t want to break a bead
When you went to the black hills, does SD require a special permit to ride the roads? Or can my Wisconsin registration be sufficient? Thank you!
Yes! You need to contact one of the county treasurers offices. They’ll get you the paperwork, it’s pretty easy and inexpensive.
