I think a biblical case can be made for mutual service but not mutual submission. If you follow what I suspect is a false doctrine - of mutual submission - to its logical conclusion, then it entails that as the church is expected to submit to Christ so also is Christ obligated to submit to us - which destroys the meaning and value of God's love on the cross! The doctrine of mutual submission is often intended to fix the design of marriage outlined in Ephesians 5:22-33. God's design for marriage doesn't need fixing. We can't pull verses out of context to suit the cultural ideals around us. The Bible teaches gender equality in terms of intrinsic value. Our worldly culture teaches gender equality in terms of equal roles and functions which justifies homosexual marriage, transgenderism, same-sex parenting, etc. Biblical wisdom does not teach the doctrine of mutual submission. This doctrine is taught by worldly wisdom. We ought not confuse the two. Within the Divine Trinity, Jesus submits to the Father while remaining coequal in the Godhead. The Father does NOT submit to the Son. There is no mutual submission there or elsewhere. The Apostle Paul taught that women are to submit to and respect their husbands "as to the Lord." Husbands are taught to love their wives more than themselves; to love them like Christ loves the church (self-sacrificial love). Children are taught to obey parents and fathers are taught not to exasperate their children. Slaves are taught to obey their masters with respect. Masters are taught not to mistreat their slaves and remember that they have their own Master in heaven. Did Paul teach these things because he didn't want to upset cultural norms? Doubtful! Paul and the other Apostles were known for their boldness in upsetting cultural norms. If we view marriage through the lens of a modern culture that teaches there is no functional difference between men and women and either one can be swapped for the other or that children don't need fathers, then the Scripture will seem offensive to us. If we view Paul's teaching on slaves and masters through the lens of American slavery then the Scripture will offend us. The indentured servitude of Biblical times was not like the slavery we think of today. Under God's design, a slave of Christ is an ideal to desire. Why? Because Christ is a truly a Master that has our best interests in mind. Under God's design, a father and child relationship is to emulate the ultimate Father figure found in the Trinity who loves Christ the Son as well as each of us as adopted sons and daughters of God. Under God's design, wives submit to their husbands as to the Lord and husbands love their wives as Christ loves the church. Submitting to Christ is a beautiful thing and if husbands are following Christ's example in their marriage then wives will feel protected, loved, and cherished as they submit to the husband. There is no doctrine of mutual submission. I don't see it in the early church and I don't see it in Scripture. If God's way in marriage, parenting, and working is offensive to us then perhaps something is wrong with us and the ways of the world have shaped the lens through which we study the Word.

Hello Emmanuel Faith praise band, The call to worship and praise is outstanding and the ending song of "I surrender all" is awesome. I remember that song from years ago at church, or a Bible camp in Wisconsin, even in recent years. Thank you for your sweet spirit and desire to praise God in a beautiful way. Hello Pastor Ryan Paulson, Thank you for sharing the word of God, how He wants our full attention to be a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, to choose surrender to God's will over our control. I really enjoy the country scenery while you teach. God bless you praise band, Pastor Ryan, and have a wonderful week! In Christ, Jonathan Sciano
