A visit to the Historic Village in Buffalo Gap, Texas. Former County Seat in Taylor County until it was moved to Abilene after the railroad was built there at the request of local ranchers.
Taylor County was named for three brothers who all served and perished at the Alamo: Edward, James, and George Taylor. The sons of Anson and Besty Taylor, Edward was 24, James was 22, and George was only 20.

There are conflicting reports. One I read in the Austin Weekly Statesman, dated August 14, 1873, said of the 15 to 20 Indians, one was killed "outright", probably the Chief Indian of the group, and the rest were run off after a hand-to-hand fight. Another letter to the Austin American Statesman dated August 7, 1873, stated at least two Indians were killed with others mortally wounded. I rather trust the prior account as it was reported by Chief Justice of Llano County E. R. Beeson. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching!

@@exploringtexashistorywithbecky it checks out with Comanche behavior to not fight to the last and to scatter after the chief and bad magic sets upon the group. Only wondering if the casualties were high if the other account is right because of being caught off guard and not horseback, which is not how Comanches fight at all would completely have them shook.

@@thesmoothtoad310 100 Percent. The Indians had a scout posted but he was asleep. The rest were dismounted and eating dinner. The eight Texans positioned themselves between the Indians and their horses, which prevented them from mounting and taking the advantage. Once the Chief fell, the Texans braced for another attack, but the Indians retreated. They let them go, as half of them were wounded and needed medical care. I am sure that if the Indians had been able to mount onto their horses, we would have a very different story to tell.

I went to Jones Creek Elementary School in Brazoria, TX (Washington on the Brazos). We lived on a part of the Stephen F Austin original sugar cane plantation, and we had an old barn on the property with an old syrup cystern right outside the barn we used as a gold fish pond. Late at night as a young boy I would hear chains rattling and songs from the barn, even though we had long coverted it to an oversized chicken coup.

Wow, the rest of the roof looks good except the spot where it looks almost like something fell through it, into the floor, except the rafters are still there. The mattress looks newer. That could be fixed with just a little money if someone had some skills. The windmill too could be fixed. Too bad that someone had to break those windows.... thank you for sharing, I started dreaming of fixing it up. Someone did a good job making a homestead there once! It would help if you took a few seconds of close up video of historical markers and tombstone that you show so they can be paused and easily read. Some even zoom in and do a slow pan down the length of the text. Even on my large monitor and full screen setting some were unreadable. Thanks again and hope to see more soon.
