Thanks for watching our TH-cam channel! Glen Echo Park is one of the finest cultural resources in the Washington, DC area. The Park is home to 13 resident artists & organizations, a nature & aquatic life program, a thriving social dance program, a restored 1921 Dentzel Carousel, two award-winning children's theaters, a weekend drop-in art program for children, numerous art studios and galleries, and hundreds of classes in visual & performing arts, including ceramics, painting, photography, glass, music, dance, and more. These activities, as well as free summer concerts, festivals, and special events bring thousands of visitors to the Park each year.
Tribal Voices: A Native American Heritage Celebration Highlights
In November 2024, the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts & Culture and the National Park Service’s George Washington Memorial Parkway presented Tribal Voices: A Native American Heritage Celebration. Part of the Partnership’s Diverse Voices event series that amplifies the stories of diverse and often-underrepresented groups, Tribal Voices was the first Native American cultural showcase at the Park featuring live performances, storytelling, and Native American artisan demonstrations and sales.

As part of the Diverse Voices event series celebrating Juneteenth at Glen Echo Park, we welcomed protestors from the 1960 carousel protests back to the Park to share how their diligence and bravery ended segregation at the Glen Echo Amusement Park. Relive the ceremony and once-in-a-lifetime carousel ride which meant so much to so many.

Nice!
Are there photos off each panel of the public window work (individually)? Would be good to see the detail in each. Great concept and works so well!
Request: The Future of Wurlitzer 165 Rolls
I studied under Herbert Vincent's daughter and her husband Ray Thomas. I built 4 wurlitzer band organs. A 125 and two 104's and one 104 i converted to midi. its been a great hobby.
What an amazing collection of skills and knowledge. It would be great if there is some kind of training or knowledge sharing scheme going on to keep these skills alive, otherwise sadly these beautiful instruments will die and fade in to past history.
From Vicki Rashbaum: Just saw this well done, incredible documentary at the Maryland Film Festival, May 5th. A must see for all who want to know more about Desegregation in Maryland in 1960's.....
Thank you, Ms. Rosa, and the young man from Montgomery History (sorry! I forgot his name), and the young lady from the Park (sorry! I forgot her name) for this wonderful insight on my very favorite reason to visit Glen Echo. I was born in 1949, and we lived In the area while Glen Echo was open. My parents took me there on many happy visits, and they told me of times they spent there, before me. I never thought to ask my grandparents if they went, mainly because I didn't know that GEP had been around that long; and, even though both sets had lived in the area, they never joined in the conversation when my folks and i were telling about our visits. I spent many many many magical moments on that gorgeous Carousel. It was always my first, and last, ride of the day whenever we visited GEP. This talk was enlightening, and fascinating. I'm glad to know that, even though more of the rides weren't saved, that GEP wasn't just abandoned to demolition by neglect, as many of my favorite childhood spots were, and especially that my Carousel has been restored to its former glory. Wish I could ride it one last time. Beautiful work! Thank you all for sharing! (edit for typo)
Thank you for all the information! That beautiful, wonderful, magical Dentzel Carousel was my very favorite reason to go to Glen Echo when I was growing up! I also loved the smaller pink Coaster and the Ferris Wheel. I don't recall that I ever got brave enough to ride the big white Coaster, but I loved to watch it zoom by. I also adored the Tilt-a-Whirl and the Round-Up..But my first ride of the day, and my last, would always be on the Carousel. I know I had at least 3 birthday parties at Glen Echo, and I know I was there a lot of other times. Mama told me of how the Park was when she was young. Mama and Daddy and I had a lot of fun days there. Mama and Daddy were born in 1926, and I came along in 1949. It never occurred to me until now that GEP had been around during my grandparents' younger days, one set being in Silver Spring, and the other just over the line in DC. They never mentioned going there; and they certainly heard us talking about it. Anyway, I'm sorry that more of the rides weren't able to be saved, but I'm thrilled that my Carousel has been restored. Wish I could take one last ride on it. Thank you for sharing! And thank you so very much for the nostalgia trip.
What a worthy celebration of the county's and the nation's progress. Many worthy remarks. I especially appreciated Marc Elrich's boldly honest in-depth historical perspective.
Love it!
Thank you Glen Echo Park!!!!❤❤👏👏🎶🎶💃💃
Dixie Pig!!
Love those harmonies ❤
Weren't they great?! Glad you could listen in!
Wonderful to see Captain, Roger, and the whole gang up there tonight.
We were so happy to have them in our line-up this year!
Awesome show. I love Kingstreet Bluegrass. I try to see them every chance I get. L
Glad we gave you another opportunity!
Thank you so much Glen echo!!… had a blast, playing the upright bass behind this wonderful band!
A great concert! Everyone loved it!!
The ancestor to a drum machine
I remember going to Glen Echo, riding the merry go round & the roller coaster.
I grew up with the 165 at Seabreeze Park and it was a sad day when that carousel went up in flames and the band organ with it. I will say that the people at Seabreeze park did a fantastic job replacing what was there and the Verbeeck 165 that is there now is over 20 years old and going strong.

The Wurlitzer 165 is always the biggest highlight to be honest. It provides all of the glory. I ' m a d d i c t e d t o w u r l i t z e r b a n d o r g a n s .
The tune on the Wurlitzer 165 band organ is "When I Grow Too Old To Dream" transcribed by B.A.B.
When I was a kid, 1962 my mom took me to Glen Echo and we went to the pool and it was segregated. In fact, I asked her why the black children were separated from us in the locker room AND in the pool. Glen Echo was a mess in terms of equality for a very long time, so the focus on this story is a tad light-handed. The bulk of the work is always done by civil rights workers to unravel racist policies. You also have ignored the legitimate emotions that were expressed at the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968 and the march that took place all the way out to Glen Echo. Glen Echo's segregation was an abomination for a very long time..
It would be nice to have a 165 back in my hometown again.
Which 165 was it and where was it at originally? Playland or where else?
That crankshaft needs replacing with steel, built up from rolled, not cast, stock. It can be sandblasted to look like cast metal. The facade ruins the organ! It hides all the intricate works which are much more beautiful than the best facade. it also muffles the sound, knocking out all the treble. I always liked the Gavioli organs because they show so much more of the internals, & do not have shutters in front of the pipes. Many have animated figures, but you can see past them to the pipes & internals.
No class, the guy not the organ
It's from the same era as the European fairground organs, it's no different. Blame Bruder for it as they are the ones that spawned the Wurlitzer 165 facade in the first place, with their Elite Apollo Orchester. The facade does not muffle the sound in any way shape or form. The big open gap to let the pipes sound out is the swell shutters. The first Wurlitzer 164 appeared in 1914 and was sold to George Layman in Boston, Massachussetts..
@@CBF1 the first 164 on record to be sold was in 3/29/1917 That was serial number 3062 and was shipped to Whiting, Indiana
@@wurly164 Yep, Brian Park will be pleased to know that the 164 has exposed pipes much like European organs... Didn't 3062 burn and what was the 2nd one's serial?
@@CBF1 I would have to look it up in the encyclopedia. One of them is said to have burned up, not sure which one, the other was basically scrapped
This band is GOOD! A fine entertaining group!
This was wonderful to watch and experience! Tiffany Williams did a fabulous job explaining the artwork - I especially loved the description of the Tea Party. That was such an interesting work of art! And ‘Jazz Jazz Jazz’!
