Our Moorish Idol cam
มุมมอง 2732 ปีที่แล้ว
Our Moorish Idol, Gill, has been with us for nearly 4 years now. We owe it's success to our fish quarantine procedures (copper treatment) and a high quality diet of purple & green algae sheets, Hikari Spirulina Mysis & Brine Shrimp, Reef Nutrition pellets, LRS Reef Frenzy & Rod's frozen food.

Firefish are very colorful, peaceful fish that like to hide in holes in your rockwork. They'll typically venture just outside their hidey-hole to capture food from the water column.

I needed to create a new rock structure to accommodate some of the 27 frags that will be added to the main display. All of our corals go through a minimum of 76 days in a fishless system (fallow) before graduating to the main display. I somehow came up with this tiara looking thing.

Beautiful! Surprised you only have 124 views after 4 years.
This is my sister she is 10 now she is so rure im 6
Zoeee
I love you dad
Don't let him escape
Does the siphon break immediately stop the back siphon? I built something similar and forgot about the siphon. Debating using a siphon break and/or check valve or just cutting the tube above the water line
Yes, the interior down pipe in the saltwater mixing station is cross drilled with holes above the water line for a siphon break.
Teach me your ways, sensei
How many gallons was the temporary aquarium?
34 gallon display, it was a Red Sea Reefer 170
@@sntmods thanks!
@@sntmods What size is the Moorish idol?
@@pabloberreondo3496 probably about 6"
Wow very nice! Love the streamers on it. I subbed.
Gorgeous and in my opinion THE most beautiful fish ever! It’s been 3 years this video has been posted.. I’m curious to see if you still have it..?
After all these years we still have our Moorish Idol in our 220 gallon display tank. It did wipe out a few nice colonies of Zoas but doesn't touch anything else.
nice set up I always wonder if you can do gravity pull fill valve because I never like the idea of installing the buckets higher. Can you please explain by doing automatic water changes I never need to do manual 20% water change? Also how do you deal with cleaning sand as a maintenance?
You need a calibrated dosing pump, such as GHL's Doser Maxi or Neptune's DOS. The dosing line that acts as the pickup tube extends down to the bottom of the saltwater container. That line runs through the doser and then to the tank, the waste line operates the same way but reversed. As for cleaning, we remove the plumbing and give it a chlorine bath every couple of years and use a pressure washer.
Hi what is the name of that connector?
It's a Molex connector. Completed cables are available @ AquaLifeStudio.com
I’m so sorry for your loss but moorish idols I just so ridiculously hard to keep I’ve had two the first on did not eat at all and the second one was eating but he didn’t eat any brine shrimp I think biota should work on breeding moorish idols !
just a quick note: RO water is good for drinking but not RODI water.
Sick aqua scape!
Thank you
What kind of fish is the white and black? Angelfish I’m guessing?
The fish with yellowish white and black vertical stripes is a Moorish Idol, its a close relative of the tangs/surgeon fish and the only member of the Zanclidae family. A difficult fish to keep in an aquarium but it can be done with the right environment and diet. Quarantine is a must
@@sntmods I’ve been thinking about the heniochus. I didn’t realize how finicky most butterflies are. We have an emperor angel and we love it.
Why are you leaving the blue lights on constantly?
This is a red sea reefer 170, about a 34 gallon display, its been converted to a coral/invert QT and houses no fish.
Qt size ?
Those are hard to keep, good for you
With the right environment, diet and attention theyre doable
Great fish
Awesome setup
Nice tank. My favorite fish hands down even though it died the first 2 times is that gold rim and yours look so healthy. I will have that will survive one day.
That’s a lot of dosing lines. Looks clean👍🏾👍🏾
That’s cool can u leave a link to get those tubing organizer

Beautiful shroom
Looking to do something very similar here. Do you have any links for the 1/4 fitting you have for the acrylic tube? I found the acrylic tube on tap plastic as you said but can't find a connector.
Just a regular 1/4 plug-in fitting will do. I had some left over black bulkhead fittings from mist-king. Bulkreefsupply.com, home depot and many other places that carry plumbing parts for ro/di and ice makers should have them
Beautiful fish one day I will try to keep one
how did you clean the tanks?
Pressure washer after an acid bath
Looks ready for corals 👍🏾👍🏾
How did you do that heater inline? What fitting did you use?
I centered and bored out a 1-1/4" hole in a 1-1/2" PVC cap, then used a 3/4" "Uniseal" and press it into place. The trick I used is to wrap a little electrical tape around the heater's glass to increase the diameter so the Uniseal doesn't leak. The Eheim Jager heater's glass isnt quite the 3/4" in diameter so the tape takes care of the rest.
Beautiful reef can wait to see it fully stock
Nice selection of Fish and corals, tank looks great 😎
Nice video looks great :)
😎👍🏾
Some lovely looking fish :)
I don't understand all the plumbing along with the pump you have hooked up between your reservoir tanks. Any chance you could elaborate on how they work?
One pump does double duty, transfers RO/DI water from one container to the saltwater mixing/storage container; and also recirculates the saltwater mix. This is controlled via the pair of valves that exist immediately before the pump. I can also pump RO/DI or saltwater to the tank by opening or closing a pair of valves that exist after the main pump. The "faucets" that exist in front of the tanks can fill my 5 gallon buckets and operates due to gravity.
Is the water in your salt container being circulated or is it stagnant? Have you have any problems with algae growing in the salt water container? What salt are you using?
I use Reef Crystals by Instant Ocean and a pump runs for a few hours a day to keep in moving. No algae issues at all.
Sadly, I lost this wonderful fish, along with a wrasse and longnose hawkfish back on August 25th after the return pump, mistakenly, wasnt turned back on for 20+ hours following a feeding. The wave pump wasnt enough to maintain enough oxygen in the water.
After 6 months of waiting for GHL, I finally got my Maxi, can you share your set up for programming? I have the P4 and Maxi slave units. Are you using any float or optical sensors to assist your AWC?
Though you can use float switches and or optical sensors, I use neither. I have a pickup tube made from from 1/4" acrylic that removes roughly 3 gallons a day right now and is installed in my sump's skimmer chamber. The clean saltwater enters my return pump chamber on it's own dosing line. I just setup a schedule within the Profilux 4 or the Maxi stand alone unit that pumps out 12000ml over a total of four sessions, every morning, and then replaces that same amount with clean saltwater. I am limited by this method as the doser is only able to pump 3000ml at a time and a maximum of 24000ml over the course of a day. Again, this is a limit set by the method I use.
Good video👍 what kind of switch are you using? And I assume its controlling your heater aswell?
DJ's Reef, it's a Leviton Wifi Plug connected via Wink app. I dont use a heater for the stored saltwater as the cooler water going to the display tank has very limited impact on temperature in such low quantities.
O ok. So what's the 2nd thing plugged in?
DJ's Reef, power cord to a surge protector. The GHL Doser Maxi is plugged into that.
Gorgeous enclosure! Your frogs look super cozy!
How big is your tank? Is this where the Mooish Idol going to be housed in?
marc palacios, the aquarium that you see at the tail end of this video is a "225 gallon". Measures 72" by 24" by 30" tall, totals 200 gallons of actual water volume which includes 20 or so gallons in the sump.
Hows the Idol doing? Has he been picking at your corals?
The Idol has been doing great. I'm making sure to keep him well fed but thus far it hasn't picked at anything other than what I intend for it to eat. It will remain housed in this tank for the next 3 months or so until I have a spot available in QT.
Why are you planning on moving the Idol?
marc palacios, the Idol's eventual home is an established 225 gallon reef
Nice!. I really want to get an Idol just hearing bad storys about them. Not eating or eating the corals...
@@marcpalacios3990 they are really easy to keep but most of them dont ship well if you could get one that eatting your good to go they eat like pigs and grow fast too
