Pastors and the Great Man Theory with Julian DeShazier | Episode 205

Julian is the Senior Minister at University Christian Church in Chicago, writes for the Christian Century and is an Emmy-winning hip hop artist who performs under the name J Kwest.

In this episode, I engage with Reverend Dr. Sam Wells, vicar of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London, on the intricate meanings of 'progressive' and 'inclusive' in Christianity. Thanks for having this conversation! I definitely feel that the PCUSA is at a pivotal point in its history in our present moment. I think for many folks, the Olympia Overture is 'overdue' and is a natural step in the long line of work done in the denomination over the past decade (like the 2018 New Castle Resolution) to make the denomination more diverse, equitable, and inclusive for all social classes. While I sincerely appreciate and admire the impetus and rationale of the Olympia Overture, the concerns I have our numerous. I think there are going to be *unintended consequences* that will be both damaging and far-reaching.

    I’m 17 minutes in and I do intend to finish. But before I lose this thought I wanted to leave it here I am a secular leftist. More specifically I’m an agnostic atheist that leans towards socialism and Marxism generally. I come from an evangelical Protestant background though so I do understand Christianity broadly. I’m no theologian but biblical history and Christian history fascinates me to no end. With all that out of the way; yes. Of course the politics of evangelical Americans like my father gets me a bit ticked off lol. I’m also not particularly keen on evangelicalism in and of itself. But at least based on my own experience with my father and the church more broadly; evangelicalism and conservatism seem to be so culturally tied together today that my father, as part of his Christian identity identifies as a republican, and for their part republicans work to subsume Christianity into their own identity as a political party. I am scared of Christian nationalism because they are fascists, and Trump has allied himself to them because he is also a fascist. Trump won the presidency and intends to do so again. The Christian nationalists seem to want this too. See I don’t care who breaks the system, be they Christian, atheist, Islamic, conservative or liberal. But breaking the system for your own benefit makes you a fascist. It’s why I agree that Stalin was a fascist as evil as hitler. Their motivation may have been different but they achieved the same ends in somewhat similar ways. Donald Trump intends to break the system for his own benefit, and has already done so, and he might succeed. I’m afraid for American democracy, not afraid of Christian nationalism specifically

      As far as it seeming like there aren’t many open Christian nationalists, well yeah I don’t think many would openly wear that title. I don’t think my dad is a fascist or an idiot, but I think the fact that he’s voting for Trump again is a fascistic and idiotic mistake for him to make. I don’t think the threat of Christian nationalism lies within any claims of their numerical advantage over us, rather the fact that they are willing and able to manipulate the system and the evangelical voters to their own ends. My dad is a kind and gentle soul. He truly cares and loves deeply, but the ties between his Christianity and his conservatism seem entirely unbreakable to me. I will not claim to be some expert, and I have not always been the most kind to my father regarding our political and religious differences, but it’s gotten to the point where he is unwilling to even talk about politics and religion with anyone, let alone me. It’s incredibly tragic and painful for me to watch

    So-called christian nationalists are actively working towards a theocratic christian dictatorship of the United States. That is the explicit and oft-stated end of their efforts. If you don't think this is a serious [problem, then you are part of the problem. The christian nationalist movement is an explicitly racist, misogynist, homophobic, transphobic collection of bigots who view anyone who does not share their bizarre and extreme notion of christianity as "the enemy." They attack Muslims, Jews, black and brown and yellow people, women who have the effrontery to demand their right to bodily autonomy, and anyone who demands equal rights for those who do not espouse the rigid and hate-filled sexual agenda of these groups. The christian nationalist movement actively supports many white supremacist groups, including violent groups listed as terrorist organizations by the FBI. The christian nationalist movement explicitly espouses the beliefs and encourages the actions of the Fascists of the mid-20th century (who were also entirely christian governments). Minimizing the hate-filled, violent, uber-bigotry of these groups is simply lying. This 'theologian' clearly either is utterly ignorant of the stated aims and the proven actions of these scum, or he elides those aims and actions because they are 'fellow christians.'

  • @SAMathlete
    @SAMathlete 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The conversation centered almost entirely on your guest's unsubstantiated hunch that the discourse about Christian nationalism is just an opportunity to engage in a culture war for progressives who turn up their noses at evangelicals and people who love God and country. But he didn't mention the actual policy objectives of Christian nationalists that are rapidly being accomplished by their direct political action through the GOP and their pipeline for conservative judges: the travel ban from Muslim countries, the overturn of Roe, the push for fetal personhood interpretations of existing law and restrictions on IVF, letting public education dollars go to religious schooling vouchers, just to name a few. You can't just point to "official" Christian nationalist groups and say, "See, their membership numbers are so small. Don't you think your concern is a bit out of proportion?" Trump has been going around hawking a "God Bless the USA" Bible that I doubt is just for those card-carrying members. There's an appetite for Christian nationalist ideas broadly through conservatives in America today. People are alarmed about Christian nationalism because they sense that we are sliding towards fascism, not because they looking for some excuse to snub evangelicals.

    This was a "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil"... approach to the subject. Is the reaction to Christian Nationalism (CN) overblown? Or should we pay attention to the lessons history (i.e. Nazi Germany) teach us? It's not like we haven't seen this playbook before. Two related questions follow. 1) Are Christian Nationalists "Christians"? No. Jesus was very clear that his kingdom is not of this world, and yet CNs go on and on about wanting Jesus to come down and take over down here and set all those "sinners" right. (Sinners in quotes as that is merely their definitions of what constitute sin, not Jesus'.) 2) Do CNs believe in authoritarian rule? Yes. Do they believe in racial supremacy? Yes. Is that race white? Yes. They are not pluralists. As a firm believer in democracy, yes, I view them as a very serious threat to the greatest social and political experiment in human history. They want to undo all the progress that we've made over the last 150 years. On top of that, they're anti-science, which we're going to need if we're to survive as a species. They are lemmings racing for the sea, and they're trying to bring as many as they can with them. Social change has been pretty rapid lately. The rules have changed. And people tend to prefer their change to occur as slowly as possible. It's actually not terribly surprising that we have a backlash to all the change. There are lots of people who are inflexible. That inflexibility has been flying under the radar for awhile, and now Donnie boy has invited it out into the open. Now they're openly critical of "democracy!" Our own Civil War is still fresh in our memories. We don't want to go there again. And the person they're following is an anti-Christ.

    LOL, if you think Trump Supporters are your enemy, than you need to move to a country that does not provide the protections ingrained in the US Constitution. Hateful Leftists abrogate the liberty of others will they or nil they and rarely, if ever, pay for such intransigence. Witness the trammeling underfoot by Engoron and Leticia in the "fraud" case. Sadly too many folks eat, sleep and drink the MSM narrative and have little to no factual knowledge concerning the cases against President Trump. If those you consider "Trump Supporters" were in anyway shape or form even half as evil as the Left has caricatured them to be, this country would be shy about 81 million voters at this point.

Did Jesus r*pe women ? Did Jesus threaten, harass, intimidate, or persecute people ? Did Jesus live a life of excess, while committing fraud ? Did Jesus commit fornication with many women ? Does that clear it up ?

    Thanks for your essay on empathy and acceptance. As a gay man I find it difficult to accept it even as I, being a Christian, know Christ compels my obedience. This response becomes yet more difficult because I know most of Trump's followers are white evangelicals who wish that I and those like me would instantly and forever disappear. I know that these folks and their comrades crave the power and influence to turn the US, not merely into a fascist state, a horrific, real-life simulacrum of The Handmaid's Tale. Can they? I hope not. Certainly not in the next 4 years. And not unless the US transforms into a radically worse nation due to economic, social or worldwide upheavals. But whether this change could happen slowly or fast, we must seek to understand each other. I believe you're spot on here. The love made manifest by the fourth century-church changed the Roman Empire almost completely. We dwellers in the American Empire must seek to show such love to those we don't already love. Even those who hate us. If we don't manifest such compassion, all of us risk becoming part of the hatred and violence rapidly consuming our country. What could be the consequence of this failure? America might well descend into fascism. We could end up in a maelstrom of social barbarism. The resulting national hell would make even Caligula, if he were alive, avert his eyes and blush.

    I want to know concerning the individuals that have given themselves over to sexual depravity like homosexuality, like you've given yourself to this, how many have had your sexual life shaped by abuse from a man or women as a child? Absence of a father or brokenness in your home? Or exposure to sexual deviant behavior from an older adult? Why aren't there studies that look at this. Because it would reveal correlation. This behavior does not originate out of a vacuum. It is influenced and oppressed upon the mind at a young age then surrendered to.
