Pin Nailer vs Brad Nailer - What’s the Difference? | Tool Reviews | The Saw Guy

Pin Nailer vs Brad Nailer What’s the Difference?
Finish carpentry is a major part of most any home renovation project, and all of the jobs that go along with it are made much easier with some sort of pneumatic finish nailer.
It can be a bit confusing trying to figure out which gun to use for each particular finish/trim application.
We’ll discuss the main differences between brad nailers and delicate pin nailers - what type of work each one is most appropriate for, and whether or not you need both for your DIY home improvement project.
Pin nailers are the smallest and most delicate of the finish nail gun family; they shoot tiny little 23-gauge headless nails that look an awful lot like pins.
A good thing to keep in mind is that pin nails offer almost zero holding power - more often than not they need to be used simultaneously with some sort of wood glue or other adhesive.
One major advantage of pin nailers, though, is that they’re so tiny they typically don’t require the holes to be filled - especially if paint or stain will be going over the finished product.
Pin nailers are best suited for the most delicate of trim pieces, tiny furniture trim, and super thin veneers where other larger-gauge guns might split the wood.
Best Pin Nailers
1. NuMax SP123 23 Gauge 1-Inch Pinner amzn.to/3nk7wof
If you’re wanting to add one to your collection of nailers but don’t see the need to spend a lot of money on something you’ll hardly use, this gun would be a great option. Shoots up to 1” 23-gauge nails.
2. PORTER-CABLE PIN100 1/2-Inch to 1-Inch 23-Gauge Pin Nailer amzn.to/2Llp5a2
A much higher quality gun than the NuMax.
If you plan on doing a lot of delicate trim work and see yourself getting a decent amount of use out of your pinner, this is the one.
Shoots between ½” and 1” nails, and is a good value.
3. Grex P650L 23-Gauge 2-Inch Headless Pinner with Lock-Out amzn.to/3rYfIhc
This is the absolute top-of-the-line gun as far as pinners go, and one of the few that will shoot up to a 2” nail.
If you’re actually wanting to use a pin nailer for any kind of molding work...
...this is really one of your only options, as anything under 2” will be far too short.
Brad nailers and anything larger, on the other hand, will generally require holes to be filled in.
Brad nailers are much more versatile guns, and can be used for most any kind of trim work, including door/window casings and wainscoting.
Best Brad Nailers (18-gauge)
1. Dewalt DWFP12233R Precision Point 18-Gauge 2-1/8 in. Brad Nailer amzn.to/38kea9A
A really top-quality 18-gauge gun that shoots 2 ⅛” nails for that extra bit of holding power...
...if you plan on using it for baseboarding, door/window casing, or wainscoting.
2. WEN 61720 3/4-Inch to 2-Inch 18-Gauge Brad Nailer amzn.to/3hLjshs
An insanely cheap option for those one a tight budget.
Not the best tool on earth, so expect some jamming and general frustrations.
However, an incredible value if you’re looking to get a general-purpose finish nailer but don’t plan on using it a ton.
Shoots anything between ¾” and 2” nails.
3. Hitachi NT50AE2 18-Gauge 5/8-Inch to 2-Inch Brad Nailer amzn.to/2KYnR4V
Another incredible price on a great quality 18-gauge brad nailer.
Very comparable to the DeWalt
You can expect this gun to function flawlessly even with day-to-day use on professional job sites.
Brad/Pin Nailer Combos
If you know you’re going to be doing a lot of finish carpentry in the near future, and really want both a brad and pin nailer on hand, consider this inexpensive combo option from Freeman that includes both guns.
Freeman PPPBRCK 2-Piece Brad/Pinner Kit with Nails and Canvas Storage Bag amzn.to/2L6QHQr
NiMH batteries are known for their ability to power devices for a longer period of time compared to most other batteries.
Their voltage power also does not falter like most rechargeable batteries...
...and stays at a constant voltage regardless of the remaining charge level.

    1) That mini-snip is cutting through a thin wire. Good luck cutting through a screw with that! 2) That's a wood saw, not a hacksaw. 3) That's a jigsaw with a wood cutting blade, cutting through wood! not a metal cutting blade, not cutting through metal. 4) That's a circular saw, not a reciprocating saw. Again, not cutting through metal, let alone a screw or nail. 5) Wanna show us what an actual bolt cutter is and not just the bolt?

this saw was good in the days, i think first versiones are around for decades i bought it, but i wouldnt buy it again. weak shoe adjusting angle and depth is a nightmare comparism to others, especialy when its a bit older you are better off in other brands dont understand whats so hipp here, why its called a in depth revue. no tests, no comparism to other saws, no precision angle or depth cuts and so on ... and so on and what is so wonderful that it comes in a bag... dont believe it

Funny because I'm shopping for one and was saying that to myself: "seems old tech". What would you recommend as of today? I know Makita is well regarded but at that price point it's a 5007 variant and it's also old stuff.

    • @berndeikers8924
      @berndeikers8924 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@guillaumepare9651 well its not so easy to say. old design is not the problem - weak construction is the problem. dont understand me wrong. this saw will do a lot of jobs and it will do it well, as long as you know what you are doing. a handheld circuit saw is one of the most dangerous tools around. so things can get quickly out of control. and the after spin is the least of your problem. i am very happy with makita 5008mg, more pricy yeah - but what a different in every way

..There is absolutely NOTHING "Pro" about ANY current, or even recent,"Poulan Pro" saws...they are ALL inexpensive, cheaply built homeowner saws, with LOTS of plastic..will they cut wood?..yes, but they are not durable or efficient, and are underpowered..I think the 5020 is their "biggest" saw, at a measley 50cc..and they have FAR too much bar and chain on them...a 20" full size 3/8 is overkill for any 50cc saw, it would be much more efficient with an 18" .325 setup...and really, many Stihl and Husqvarna saws are now cheaply built hunks of plastic, especially the small displacement 35-45cc models..and in fact, the cheapest Husqvarna saws are re-skinned Poulans..now you want a REAL "Poulan Pro"?..they actually did used to make pro models, which were mostly re-badged Pioneer and Jonsered/Partner designs..the Poulan Pro 655BP is a REAL muscle saw....

I’ve got to comment since most of the comments read seem to be bias. I’ll start by saying im a lineman and have used primarily STHL at work for 15 years. I never thought they were the best and only somewhat reliable. Which is very important in my work. At home I’ve had a poulan pro pr5020 that I have beat the sh*t out of for 4 years on my 12 acres. Oak, madrone, manzanita, pine. I did upgrade it with a new bar and chain off the bat. I drilled holes in plastic near air filter and one in the exhaust that gave me better performance. I would never buy any name brand for 2x 3x the money. Im heading to get my second pr5020 because I know it can handle 4 years of hard work and abuse. For anyone saying it’s garbage, I believe that is strictly the user and lack of knowledge of using a chainsaw.

I've trashed 2 Poulan chainsaws in the past. I only buy Stihl, Echo and am also adding a Husqvarna 435 X Torq soon for a lightweight limbing saw. You get what you pay for and in my experience you spend more time working on the Poulan keeping it running than you do cutting with them. They also are only rated for 50 hours service life and are homeowner grade. It's not going to last and is disposable junk compared to a Stihl MS-391 and Echo CS-490. Nowhere near as good as a Husqvarna 435 X Torq either.....
