Neither could really sing but they both. Communicate with their entire body face arms , and spirit to entertain. Pearl and her ready smart Alec ruined the song it te green apples, rushing through some of the words- after all , It’s all aboutPearl. Pearl loves herself more than any other human on the planet. Carol plays a gay man in drag. Both highly entertaining with just a scratch of real talent. Streisand just stands there and her true talent overwhelms you. Judy Garland aimed to please plus the talent , it was almost too much to witness but all of us did . Pearl and Carol will be forgotten in one hundred years but Barbra and Judy will never be forgotten

A friend was in final 3 up for Cornelius in Channing’s last Dolly on Broadway. He was 6’4” flat foot and they cut him because of his height. Miss Channing ran and caught him at the door. wrapped her arms around his waist (as far as she could get) and said “You’re fantastic my dear, but you’re just too TAWLL” He floated home. 2 days later he was called in to audition for a scheduled revival of Guys and Dolls. The director hired him and said that “Carol was right,,,tall as a redwood and voice like Howard Keel.” Rick danced all the way back to Brooklyn.

I always loved the way Pearl Bailey would phrase completely without regard to the meter of the band and yet always ease right back into the rhythm to finish the phrase in perfect time. That’s Jazz.

I saw Pearl perform in a NYC night club around 1980. A great opportunity!❤❤❤ I saw Carol perform in HELLO DOLLY in her last tour on Broadway. When she walked on stage for her entrance to the restaurant, she looked at the audience with those big eyes, as if she was saying, "Now you applaud!" Of course it became a standing audience of love.❤❤❤

Back when famous women looked beautifully unique, their personalities just beam from them. They're dressed beautifully, elegantly, and they are enjoying each other and the crowd so much.

Class, sass and brass. They had it all. These are the type of shows that you just won't experience on today's stages. However, it is shows like this that set the pace great shows, comics and more. They sang, danced and gave their audience a real show without stripping and gyrating. The costumes are gorgeous. They worked so well together. I enjoyed EVERY moment and hated to see it end. Thank you for posting this marvelous Broadway production.

Astounding! Carol Channing was the first-ever Dolly in the 1960's run of "Hello, Dolly!" and Pearl Bailey was one of the last (Ethel Merman closed the multi-year run.) The notion of putting Channing and Bailey together was inspired. There could not be two more dissimilar performers, and yet - they each have a sense of tremendous humor, ebullience, and freedom as performers. They complement each other beautifully. Some people have carped, online, about the fact that this concert-for-television was rough around the edges, but --- with two stars who are not afraid to be silly, that "looseness" (with costume malfunctions and occasional uncertainty about blocking) only adds to the buoyant sense of fun. I wouldn't change a moment of this priceless concert. It's marvelous. I must add that I sat in the audience for a 1978 revival of "Hello, Dolly!" starring Channing and Eddie Bracken, in New York, in 1978 -- and some eight years later, at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida, I saw Pearl Bailey in concert with her drummer husband, Louie Bellson, and orchestra. I am so pleased to have seen two great female stars, in person, who were larger than life. Oh, the energy and joy that each of them radiated! Would that it could have been bottled and sold.

Notice how Carol keeps coming into a musical phrase late or finishing it late. She is always a beat slower than the music, dragging it back a little. That is 100% intentional. Carol said if you keep the band and the audience waiting for you , they listen harder, anticipating for your entrance and wondering when you will arrive. That means you have them paying attention. Every time I hear Carol sing one her standards, she decides her own pacing, not the band.
